When I reconnected the strap, the purpose of the spring became obvious.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have two straps hanging from my top. They are located midway but near the side windows and I have no idea where they go or what their function. I searched "Top straps" and "Straps hanging from top" and got pages and pages of unrelated info. Any help appreciated, Bob ('99 Cab)
The search function on this forum doesn't work that well to find what you're looking for, better to use a regular Internet search engine and not only will it search this forum better but it also searches other ones.
We have 1 or 2 velcro straps that sometimes work their way loose end hang down from our 2002 convertible top, I just tuckh them back in I don't see what they're connected to and nothing seems to be sagging or otherwise out of order.
There are a few elastic straps to assist with folding the top as it goes down. These straps wear out over time and need some help. My top came with a problem where the passenger side would fold out and get caught in the cover. It had a strap hanging out of the passenger side that looked like it had been cut. The mating cut was found on the strap connected to the driver side. When I pulled it out of the sleeve across the top, I found a spring in the middle of the strap. When I reconnected the strap, the purpose of the spring became obvious. When the top is up, the spring is stretched. When you put the top down, the spring pulls in on the sides of the top to tuck them in. The other problem the top had is seen in many pictures where the top doesn't seem to pull tight on one side. This was due to a broken rivet at the front cable mount. I replaced the rivet, requiring some top disassembly, and the top closes correctly with the correct folds. There are some other elastics that I haven't messed with as the top seems to work OK now.
I agree the search function is a bit clunky, but the information is here. This thread has some links to other threads that talk about some issues. Maybe not the strap issue, but it's good to be familiar.

Good luck.
Plus, when searching with Google, putting the word Rennlist in quotes will likely include posts from this site. I think Google groups posts in a site into a group, which helps. Theres then a link for more from this site.
