Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It doesn't take much to check a POF link...a bright light is sufficient.
Leading evidence: 'Check pof link...a bright light is sufficient' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pof link...a bright light is sufficient' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm sure Porsche has worked out a lot of those earlier problems, but it seems like the 996 was the test bed for a lot of new innovations that the owner had to swallow in repair costs.

We were looking at making a change from POF to a glass fiber mostly for data rate reasons (glass fiber is also more robust in most ways...other than you can stretch POF or bend it in ways that might break a glass fiber Glass fiber can have an very very small bend radius, but can't handle a 90 degree bend like POF can).

They are ready to replace the unit, under 3rd party warranty, but before they do I am wondering if it could be anything else, perhaps the ignition switch?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

One thing Daimler talked about was having problems with customers making repeated trips to the dealer for network issues saying the radio was not working, but when the mechanic brought the car in, it worked.
The radio in my 04 C4S intermittently has no sound. The unit powers up and all of the functions work, but has no sound. The mechanic reset the radio by pulling the fuse with no effect.
They are ready to replace the unit, under 3rd party warranty, but before they do I am wondering if it could be anything else, perhaps the ignition switch? I throw the ignition switch question out there because last night I had left the radio on between trips, even thought it had no sound, and when I started the car everything worked fine.
I know I can get the new unit for just the $100.00 deductible so it is not the cost, just would rather not have them pawing at my interior.
Thanks,
I have the same problem. Did you ever find a solution? Call if easier to communicate as I would appreciate the help as I do not want anybody with my dash either.
Thanks, John Hodgson

John - first edit your post and delete your phone number. Not a good idea to post your phone number and full complete name on the internet. Second, your are responding to a post from 2012, 8 years ago. You should start a new post in 2020 with your specific problem.
I'm going to chime in on this as i have a similar issue
'03 w/ CDR-23
it is an intermittent problem, and i've noticed it happens more when it gets colder outside (well, CA cold 40 ish)
if I push the CD button, then the FM button, the sound comes back, but the audio setting are lost - station presets remain
any ideas short of replacing the head unit?
I'm not an audiophile, and i like the plain look of the factory unit, so not looking for some thumping system
I don't have a car with MOST....I'm assuming the MOST system uses plastic optical fiber in the 996's to connect the head unit to the amp, etc (MOST did switch back to to copper again later). Is that correct? I worked on a MOST project with Daimler 2003-2006 (I am in the optical fiber connectivity industry) and one odd thing that can happen that causes intermittent failures in MOST is having a POF link that is broken. Even when broken, it is possible to transmit enough light to complete the link but, when it gets cold, the two faces shrink away from each other and attenuation goes through the roof and the connection fails. One thing Daimler talked about was having problems with customers making repeated trips to the dealer for network issues saying the radio was not working, but when the mechanic brought the car in, it worked. Customer takes the car home...next cold morning radio dies again.....car warms up and mechanic checks it and it works. It doesn't take much to check a POF link...a bright light is sufficient.
It was a real PITA for Daimler. A side effect that was a positive (oddly) was: if glass fiber broke, it didn't work. In the end, Daimler, BMW, and Audi found a way to encode and transfer more data over POF and didn't make the network architecture change that the glass fiber would have required (a change to 850nm VCSELs, new connectorization methods, new cable specs) due to cost concerns (at Daimler, Chrysler was bleeding them and they went on a huge cost reduction effort). Then they found a way to increase data rates even more with a copper cable. If you can test the cable and it is dark....yeah, it needs replacing.
From my personal experience, when Porsche moved away from analog to digital MOST, the problems started. I never had any problems with the old stuff. I'm sure Porsche has worked out a lot of those earlier problems, but it seems like the 996 was the test bed for a lot of new innovations that the owner had to swallow in repair costs.
