What we can change though is the bias ratio, which affects how much torque can be transferred to the wheel with most traction.

So, basically, no group buy unless someone decides to submit their current diff and do back and forth testing (which can include multiple installs and removals) or someone sends in the entire transmission so internal testing can take place?

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Since Ive been looking at LSDs for my 996 I asked Mfactory a company that makes an LSD for the Cayman if they had one for the 996. They offered me a group buy option where they would develop a new LSD for the 996 at a cost of $850 per LSD with a minumum order of 10. Anyone interested in joining a group buy? You can look at the LSDs here. http://technik.teammfactory.com/ Interested members please respond to this post. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Interested. Not sure of level of interest, but I have been eyeing the Guards LSD, but not the dent in my wallet it would make.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What I like about this one is that is has good reviews on other cars and the price is right. Cheaper than a Wavetrac and a Quafe or Guard

POST 4Original post

Is this for 996.1 or 996.2, or both. I am interested if 996.2.

POST 6Original post

They use the same diff Is this one a torque sensing geared diff or a true plated diff . That sure is an attractive price if it's a good diff .

It's a Helical LSD. Here's an explanation of the differences. http://www.trak-life.com/basic-introduction-helical-torsen-viscous-mechanical-limited-slip-differentials-lsd/ Direct from the explanation.

Anyone get a quoted installation cost from their local shop? I did.... uumphh. No LSD for me.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 13239777

I just called my indy tech to get a quote on labor. I'll post what I find out when I here back.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 13239777

6 - 8 hours to install @$119/hr plus potential parts (shims, oil, etc.)

POST 20Original post

That means probably 25-30 hours DIY plus special tools.

POST 22Original post

Install doesn't look too painful... https://rennlist.com/forums/gt2-and-...d-install.html

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 13242640

I know he makes it looks like a bolt on thing... but isn't there some sort of shimming or something involved that makes it MUCH more difficult? Maybe his was easy because he is reinstalling the exact same unit? (Just a guess because if a shop says 6 hours, what is shown in the above link shouldn't take six hours).

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 13241535

Hm. Without looking it up I was initially thinking a 2-3 hour install max. Need to call my guy - at 6 hours of labor this probably isn't worth it for me at the moment. I've got some suspension work as a priority.

POST 25Original post

If you have any technical questions, please feel free to ask. Please note that I cannot answer any sales related questions though as we are not yet a Vendor on this forum. Thanks!

POST 26Original post

I was charged for 6 hours for a LSD install. Not all shops will take it on as you need some special gear to measure and determine the shims needed

POST 27Original post

If you are DIY, you will at minimum need access to a dial gauge (to measure back-lash) and relevant sized shims (in order to set the back-lash) If you have a professional install it for you, you must take it to a shop that has experience with installing and setting up RWD Differentials i.e if the back-lash is not setup correctly, not only will it whine like hell, it "may" also damage your ring & pinion Other than that though, installation really isn't too difficult, and should only take an experienced installer a few hours.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 13243237

I'd be curious to see what the professional procedures look like. I would have guessed it'd be add a shim, take off a shim, until the torque wrench clicks when you want it.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 13243309

Although this guide is for a BMW, the same principal applies to setup (note the part about the Dial Gauge and Back-Lash): http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1102264

POST 30Original post

If we had a group buy, what would be the ramp up value and could we have a customized one or will it be just be one type only for GB? Also any plans to do some kind of documented procedure/instructions specifically for the 996?

POST 31Original post

As this is for a torsen-style LSD, there are no "ramps". What we can change though is the bias ratio, which affects how much torque can be transferred to the wheel with most traction. All current torsen-style LSD's on the market have a bias ratio allowing upto around 66% torque to the wheel with traction. As with our BMW LSD's, we would increase this to around 75%, which will give you significantly more "pull" around tight corners. Regarding documentation, this would be something that would have to be done in conjunction with one of the GB members, as we do not have a full transmission here to work on (unless one of you have a spare core and are willing to ship to us?)

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13243651

I could possibly ship mine. Its currently out already while the engine is being rebuilt.

POST 33Original post

To make the LSD, we would need the oem open differential To make the install guide, we would need the full transmission This is where shipping costs start to come into the equation (7kg vs 40kg)

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 13243651

Duh, brain fart moment. Thanks for the clarification.

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 13243688

Am I understanding this correctly? We'd first have to ship our cores to San Dimas, CA and then wait for XXX days until we get our built diffs/cores back? Or did you just need one open diff to initiate production so that the rest of us can just buy the LSDs without having to ship the cores?

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 13243761

No no, we don't need anything from you Basically, to start this project, we need: 1 x oem Open Differential (i.e the part the LSD will be replacing) OR 1 x transmission (i.e if you also want documentation) If we only have an oem Open Differential, one of you will need to be the "official tester" to test fitment before we ship out the rest of the units to the other buyers. If we have a transmission, then we can do the testing in-house and don't need to rely on a tester. After we have one of the above, we can make the LSD, and then ship the LSD directly to you for you to either DIY or have a shop install it for you Also, just to make this clear from the start, due to existing projects currently being worked on, new LSD projects will take around 3-4 months from start-to-finish, so you would be looking at around Sept time before the units would be ready.

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 13243785

Ah. Good news for me, considering priority mods. Now, who is going to be the guinea pig?!

POST 38Original post

So, basically, no group buy unless someone decides to submit their current diff and do back and forth testing (which can include multiple installs and removals) or someone sends in the entire transmission so internal testing can take place?

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Reviving this thread. MFactory has had my original diff for about 4 years now. We should get this group buy done. Anyone interested? It would be nice to have an LSD that sends 75% torque to the wheel with most traction. Im currently running an OBX LSD with upgraded shims and bolts. I added it years ago after reading other cars had used them with upgraded shims and bolts without an issue. The problem is I don't think the OBX is transferring the torque as well as the MFactory LSD would. Plus the quality of the LSD is much higher.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
