This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
I had actually thought it was the 1st-2nd shift until I recently figured out that the car starts in 2nd gear.
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
I take the C4S to the track for a weekend, give several track prepped cars a run for their money, then, as these same track prepped cars are being carefully loaded into trailers, I just get in the car, turn on the AC, listen to Natalie Cole on CD, and enjoy the ride home.
Leading evidence: '1st-2nd shift until i recently figured out' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '1st-2nd shift until i recently figured out' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run their money' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone experienced this behavior with a tiptronic....?
When I'm in the manual gate, 2nd gear, at or near stopped, I'll slowly but steadily accelerate. At 2200 revs or so, there is a very brief hesitation. The lull feels like when you hit the rev limiter and the fuel is shut off. At first I thought the transmission was shifting, but then I thought, wait a minute, I'm in "M" mode and I'm still in 2nd gear so it can't be that.
Is this a bug? I can duplicate it, but not 100% of the trys. Seems to happen more often when accelerating from a near stop as opposed to anytime I pass through that rev range. Is this just a small annoyance, or am I headed towards a bigger problem?
It's a 2001 with tip/s, which I understand was put on with the 2000 model year.
The 996 with variocam engine has a moment of hesitation somewhere between the 2000 to 3000 rpm range. Mine is at about 3k rpm, just a brief blip, and only detectable on a slow aceleration. Full throttle is a strong continuous pull, with a kick above 3k rpm, with no hesitation.
Since you notice this at M mode, I don't believe this has anything to do with the tranny. Lots of discussions on this brief hesitation in the archives. Consensus seems to be that this is a variocam quirk.
Very conicidentally, I just talked to my dealer's service manager this morning about the same problem, a hesitation in second gear that feels like a shift. (I had the car in there yesterday to have it checked out).
In my case it couldn't be the variocam because it only happens in 2nd gear. I had actually thought it was the 1st-2nd shift until I recently figured out that the car starts in 2nd gear.
Dealer says that Porsche says that this is known as "torque converter lock up", and a known problem on some 996 tips and it is without a solution at this time. They said they will try erasing the transmission memory which might help some, but they are not confident.
Seems like a clear cut warranty item to me, so I don't plan on letting the issue slide.
P.S. I didn't see anything in the archives on this.
So as a relatively new P-car owner, I'm torn between these alternative emotions...
(1) that variocam hesitation is the essence of Porsche. It's a personality that makes driving a Porsche special, just like hearing the engine rev to red line or the way the guages are laid out.
(2) what a POS! No comparable high performance car or any car for that matter in this price range would have ever been shipped with such poorly executed performance. They should fire the engineer that signed off on that one and recall every single unit.
What do you think is the right response?
My '03 C4-S has it too.
I have a manual trans.
Although I am happy with my first Porsche and it's personality is growing on me, quite frankly I am pretty disappointed at some of the shortcomings. Some people say these are part of the personality but I feel those things should be engineered into a car and not things that are just a fact of not being done correctly in the first place.
I have one piece of advice for those who feel that there are shortcomings to their $80K+ Porsche.
Take it to the track!!! <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
As a first time Porsche owner, I had a few misgivings after a few weeks of ownership. All gone after the first DE. Ride too harsh? The better to corner with. Steering too heavy? Excellent road feel. Variocam hesitation on slow acceleration? Floor the pedal, and it will plaster you to the back of your seat the full rpm range.
Here's what gives me the biggest grin. I take the C4S to the track for a weekend, give several track prepped cars a run for their money, then, as these same track prepped cars are being carefully loaded into trailers, I just get in the car, turn on the AC, listen to Natalie Cole on CD, and enjoy the ride home.
Got to love this site. I am a first time Porsche owner, wanted one forever, just got a 2003 base 996 in December and loving it. Well maintained single owner car in great shape.
After driving for 4-6 weeks noticed a flat spot in the power band around 3200 RPM. Only occurs at a modest throttle position. So happy to hear it is nothing to worry about.
Love the car, it exceeds all of my expectations.
