I just renewed my membership, and when I see another thread about that I shake my head and wonder why I come here.

One reason is because of awareness (people doing more frequent services, using real oil, and being vigilant) and the other is because so many cars have been retrofitted.

Using the search function is often suggested, but I know when I've searched for something too many times the searches turn up about a zillion hits and it is tough to wade through all the mud to find the treasure.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just look at the threads today, and how many are IMS BS.
Is there not an argument that the forum moderators should just move all of these to a singular IMS thread?
Whilst it is there as a sticky, very few seen to use it, and we have to endure never ending IMS based crap all around basically the same question.
I dont think they should be deleted, just move them off the standard forum
+996
In fact, I proposed an IMS subforum before long time ago but that didn't pick up. It can be automated and don't need the MOD's time. Threads with keywords such as IMS, IMSB, etc. are automatically filtered into the subforum.
I made the same suggestion but withdrew it when I was warned off by another member that such suggestions were unwelcome. I still think it's a good idea - 996 forum fields a LOT more traffic than most of the other forums - it would be nice to keep 996-related BS here instead of tossing it into the free-for-all that is RLOT.
Well, I was thinking more along the lines of an off-topic subforum where pretty much everything - including IMS gloop - would get banished to keep the focus on technical discussions.
How about a challenge to all those able to drive their cars (the majority), to share more fun stories, great pics (of their cars), and interesting discussion? If the "IMS" discussion is dominating the board, then that's obviously a reflection of what most people want to talk about.
FWIW, I agree on a lot of the threads. But as a guy having an issue with mine, more accurately a dead engine, I didn't want to post at the end of a sticky thread that everyone ignores. I came to the forum for advice and input on my situation and a lot of very helpful members were willing to chime in and provide both help and encouragement. That's one of the great things about boards like this and it wouldn't happened if we banned any IMS or engine related problems.
but.....but......but......I PREFACED my post by saying "I have already SEARCHED but could not find an answer"......swears every poster who starts an IMS thread
P.S. If only members can muster the self restraint to NOT ANSWER/REPLY/POST to any and all future IMS threads, I am betting this collective SNUB/BOYCOTT will deter/discourage the pesky topic.
But IMHO, AHSAI's idea the best:
I don't think we are talking about banning IMS posts. I for one am interested to read 1st person experience posts like yours. I think we're (or at least I am) just talking about directing the IMS posts to a single place as opposed to clogging the main technical forum with repeated IMS newbie posts. Even with a sub-IMS forum, whoever are interested will still check and post there. To me it's more like an organizational question whether we want to lump all topics together like a trash bin or separate out some with very focused topics.
I joined rennlist after I bought my car and I'm certain, if I looked to all the IMS subjects, I will be driving the Subaru BRZ, instead of my 996, if you want to hear funny stories go to the off topic on the members section, this forum should be more technical, I'm agree there is an IMS discussion thread and a poll, maybe the admin drives an air cooled, and he just laugh his *** off seeing how even the owners, are scare of driving this cars and appraise them dirt cheap.
I think Boxster and Cayman owners, enjoy their cars and respect them, more than our 911's, if I'm worry my engine is going to fail, I should be worry to get into an accident and do not drive at all or even move myself out of my house to beat the statistics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is very sad
this would be hard for the admins because so many innocent threads turn into ims threads.
Whats this in my oil filter?
what should i do to this car if I buy it?
should i buy this car? has the xxx been done?
where is that oil dripping from?
[I] checked car fax and my car has been through three engines. why?
I don't mind at all where the IMS posts are. It does amaze me that it seems t be a never ending subject. I am new to this whole forum but it's like others I have been on, many different personalities and different views and some subjects are always beaten to death but never die. The moderators aren't going to do anything about arranging the subject matter so just grin and bear it.
People want to spoon fed information instead of finding it themselves. I few seconds of smart searching would find this link in the sticky:
http://www.thepopularmechanic.com/Po...MSOptions.html
And Google will easily find this page which is quite informative:
http://imsretrofit.com/ims-101/
After reading all of that, there should not be many questions.
Andrew, threads about actual real problems aren't the issue. You are an unfortunate casualty and we're here to offer support/ideas/sympathy as we are able.
Its the "i refuse to search/read so i'm going to ask someone to spoon feed me" threads that engenders so much ire. Though I have come to kind of like the threads as interesting "bearing" pictures often show up and I'm always on the lookout for new details on the subject
I believe people come looking but just reading won't ease fears. They want someone to discuss Their car or potential purchase to help them hear it first hand and make them feel better. I don't care about the IMS threads, I read every one of them. Just my two pennies.
Yep, an IMS Sub forum would work. I'd sponsor it!
That said, we see the other failures a lot more often than IMSB failures these days. One reason is because of awareness (people doing more frequent services, using real oil, and being vigilant) and the other is because so many cars have been retrofitted.
Intermix, broken timing chains, and broken rod bolts are the current hot topics.
Chill.
Skip the thread or abort reading it when you come up on the dreaded 3 or 4 letters.
I don't mind the IMS(B) threads. I can take them or leave them, as I do many other threads, but if someone is concerned about this and wants to ask about it and get some of the latest info and opinion, I see nothing wrong with that.
Using the search function is often suggested, but I know when I've searched for something too many times the searches turn up about a zillion hits and it is tough to wade through all the mud to find the treasure.
And if one does find the thread there is reviving a years' old thread thing if he wants more detail or an update.
If you don't like IMS(B) threads don't read them and certainly don't post to them.
to the op....double chill dude or better yet go over to pIX ....gayman and the other E johns will moderate you for misspelling porsche or not having ferrie porsche ,s picture in your bathroom
I am chilled thanks
I just feel it's crazy the about of IMS threads that ask the exact same question, 2 minutes after a previous post.
I go on other car and bike forums and they all have sub forums, I think our forum would benefit from the same. Then members who want to can read IMS threads till their hearts content.
I'm not suggesting banning them or deleting them, just have an IMS sub forum.
If you want to be fair to all members take a poll on this clearly divisive topic
agreed. it drives me nuts that the mods allow so much non technical jibber jabber. IDGAF how pretty your car looks set against the backdrop of the blueridge mountains...I really dont. no buddy does. STAHP. If you want to post that ****, pay up and goto off-topic. /rantoff
As a non owner looking to get into a Porsche 996 someday I like reading everything I can get my hands on about possible issues with the car. I never knew this IMS issue even existed or how serious it could be before reading this forum. Believe me this forum is much better set up than the Corvette Forum I'm a member of. Fully half of the threads there are vendors hawking their products or stupid topics like "what's your car's name?" I agree that all of the doom and gloom about the IMS can color your perception and make you think twice before buying one of these beautiful cars but I think it also helps having all the information readily available.
Agreed. If the name of IMS sub forum sounds silly, how about an "Engine Reliability" sub forum or even "Engine Reliability and Rebuild" forum? A lot of other forums have subforums like that.
True, each viewer can filter out the IMS threads manually but why not keep things organized especially clearly there are folks extremely interested in these IMS threads.
No matter how much we bitch, nothing is going to stop pretty much every new owner from posting:
* An "IMS - think it'll happen to me" thread
* A "wow, I just found out how much tires cost, do I really need N-rated ones" thread
* A "hey, which oil do you think I should use" thread.
Regardless of whether you think this sucks, I think it's accurate - so how can we better sort the technical discussion from the new 996 owner questions? I don't think owners should be discouraged from asking any questions, but I also don't think every one needs to dissolve into a bitchfest with weak pr0n.
The 996 DIY thread, which should be huge given the amount of traffic 996 forum gets, only has 10 items in it, so the 996 forum is the primary technical resource, not the DIYs. Being able to post chaff is nice - and is good for new members, but separating it from the wheat would sure be handy.
Maybe we could have a Engine and mechanical Questions related sub forum, though some of these sub forums are easy to not see so it may not help. Personally I just ignore IMS threads.
The reality is nothing's going to change. There is no way the forum can make EVERYONE happy. Those that are really bothered by certain posts will finally just skip over them, some will just quit coming here. Most will just continue as they have, its just the way it is.
The problem with subforums is that it requires the posted information the be further sliced and diced and subcategorized.
We already have subforums on RL: for each model of car, for sale, racing, etc. I think that's sufficient. We have a very good search function, so if someone wants to read a bunch of IMSB threads, they can easily find them.
Now, what would we do if someone posted about the IMSB issue and about oil in the same thread? Move it to the IMSB subforum? Move it to the oil subforum? Replicate the thread and put it in the IMSB and oil subforums?
As annoying as the IMSB questions are, I realize that there are many new 996 owners that are just learning of this wonderful feature of their cars, and therefore can be somewhat forgiven for not realizing that they are giving a hornet's nest a kick when they make their posts.
996pp has the best solution to the IMSB thread issue:
Then, everyone's happy.
Shall we give it a go the next time a newbie IMSB thread pops up, and see what happens? This requires 100% participation to work.
You asked for it, I will be keeping a better eye on things.
And enough with the boobies. I like them as much as the next guy but they do not belong in a tech forum. We have an off topic area for this.
Thanks.
As much as I hate the endless/repetitive/un-researched threads on the same topics, I think I dislike strict moderation more...
Maybe we could just get in the habit of replying to such threads with our own pointer...
Something like this?
----------------------------------------------
Please post your IMSB questions
HERE
Great idea, the plan with that thread was have all IMS related topics put on it. But the newbie smartphone generation that has no patience for searching does the "I want my info NOW" post.
Ok.......just jumped off the soapbox......carry on.
Now, what if the boobies are in self defense?
You know, for example, if KK makes another one of his famous posts along the lines of "hey, the 996 is a great car for an amateur mechanic because it's easy to work on, and you'll need to work on it yourself because there are so many parts that might fail on it that you cannot afford to take it to a professional mechanic."
KK lives in Texas, where I believe it is legal to use lethal force in defense of property. Let's say Dgjks6 also lives in Texas, and we all know (thanks to Schnell's "Signatures R Us" banner) that Dgjks6 is at the end of his rope with 996 bashers. Dgjks6 reckons (this is Texas we're talking about, so "reckons" is a proper verb) that lethal force is appropriate to stop KK from further maligning his 996 and posts that he's "a comin' after KK's no-good, dirty-rotten, yeller-bellied hide." When KK learns of Dgjks6's intentions, KK posts a witty repartee accompanied by a nice boobie pic that calms everyone's nerves and defuses the tense situation.
Would that be OK?
It goes to show you how all these threads are starting to look alike. I was trying to find my post that I was SURE was in this thread that solves our problem...which is that any IMS posts would automatically be redirected to the IHI Thread in Off Topic. That would save us a lot of time and presumably, keep Marc happy.
The fact that my idea was actually posted in
another
thread supports the OP's position in this thread!
But I'm with you guys in blaming the OP for getting us in trouble with the Mods. Nice job
Just my two cents, but a tech forum should be technical. I think the warning should be quickly followed with a the ban hammer if someone posts non technical posts. Otherwise what is the point of having a technical forum at all? The forum should be renamed to "general 996 forum" if the non technical stuff is going to be allowed to persist. Then it is at least an honest description of the forum and all is well in the world. As it currently stands now, Id say at least about a 50/50 on technical vs. OT/general 996 discussion.
To me it sounds like everyone is just driving their BMWs (Bitching / Moaning / Whining) - why not just greet uniformed posts with a helpful answer?
No need to humiliate the user, just give a few links to all the reading material they could ever want.
Yes, a mod could have a pre-formed post that they use each time with the appropriate info - and any forum members willing to help out can also yell out *First!* if you get to it before anyone else. Then, just let the post DIE - don't bother posting more or responding to other questions.
We were all n00bs once before this site gave us the vastly superior intelligence to anyone else just starting to look at 996s... :-P
Ease up, we need balance, yes it should be tech oriented but Rennlist is a community and we do not want to lose that.
Frankly the reason I have been not been around as much as I used too is I just got really tired of the endless IMS posts.
