Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Anyone dumped all 14 quarts of oil (or whatever it is--9.5 that gets changed) and measured it and compared it to the dipstick vs.
Leading evidence: 'Replace ) and measured it and compared it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check e-gauge occasionally' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I will check the e-gauge occasionally but always confirm with dipstick prior to adding oil.

when I check the oil level with the engine/oil hot.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

How much roughly does one bar on the oil level indicator equate to.
The level on the indicator has gone down 1-2 bars depending in about 1200 miles.
The dipstick reads full.
had a search but couldnt find anything definitive
Will the dipstick read differently if the engine has not been started in a few days and is absolutely cold than a half hour after its driven when the engine is still pretty warm?
Probably. I never really bother with the dipstick in my Boxster and the Turbo doesn't have one.
But I have observed with the Boxster the oil level reading is down 2 bars (sometimes 3 bars) when I check the oil level cold vs. when I check the oil level with the engine/oil hot.
(I can only check the Turbo's oil level with the engine hot.)
And the caution about the car being level is spot on.
With the car on an incline either an up or down angle the level is affected some but if the car is down on other side -- like if one parked on the side of a crowned road --- the level can be down 3 or more bars even if the oil level is at the max bar when checked hot.
(The Turbo's oil checking system refuses to operate if the car is not pretty level. The Boxster's system doesn't care and would probably work with the car on its side.)
Why "unfortunately"?
While I haven't confirmed this I would hazard a guess the difference in oil volume between the max and min bars is given in the manual regardless of the year of the manual.
Trust the dipstick. Engine hot but sitting for enough time for oil drip down to occur, and level. I was confused and worried when I bought my first(last year) and read a discussion concerning oil level gauges. Someone had commented about why our cars have an electronic gauge the response he got was: "you wouldn't expect an owner to open the engine hood and pull out a dipstick in a three piece Armani suit, would you?" Made me smile! I will check the e-gauge occasionally but always confirm with dipstick prior to adding oil. Seems easier than the prospect of draining some back out.
Why is it a given to trust the dipstick? Anyone dumped all 14 quarts of oil (or whatever it is--9.5 that gets changed) and measured it and compared it to the dipstick vs. electronic?
Anyone have any data other than tradition or some theory on mechanical measurements being superior to electronic measurements? This just seems like advice being perpetuated for no reason.
Trust the dipstick, Trust the dipstick, trust the dipstick mirrors a traditional method of brainwashing to affect an outcome that is irrational. No offense Jay G.
I welcome someone to prove me wrong.
I thought 3-piece suits were by now the exclusive domain of 500-pound southern retirees in big, white Cadillacs.
gricec: did the level not move on the dipstick, but did move on the dash gauge? That's weird.
As others have posted, a variation of +/- 1 bars isn't unusual, and the car reads lower @ the dash if you get the reading immediately after switching it off.
"Why is it a given to trust the dipstick? "
Because it's the simplest and most direct way to read the oil level/amount. Electronic meters can and do give inaccurate readings under certain circumstances. TRUST THE DIPSTICK ! It really is good advice
Here's what I don't understand. The book says to check the oil when it's warm or operating temperature. I did that ten minutes after I shut it off and its the same the next day when it hasn't even been started yet. Both measurements were taken on the stick. Both were right at full.
