Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I first start the car I can hear a hum. It lasts about 15-20 seconds and generally stops when I drive off.

POST 2Original post

That's the sound of the on-line banking system emptying your bank account!

POST 3Original post

RUN!! ITS GONNA BLOW! If it is first start when cold the noise is most likely the Secondary Air Injection pump (SAI). It injects air upstream of the cats to help them "light off" quicker. I think they are timed to run for up to 2 minutes if conditions warrant. You may also hear it at other times, like after coasting down from speed on off ramps etc. When these pumps get dirt filled or bearings start to go dry they can sound like an angry small vacuum cleaner. There are a couple of DIY threads on disassembly/cleaning/resurrecting them.
