Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I suggest a complete check-over by someone who knows - not the oil change monkeys!
Leading evidence: 'Check over by someone who knows - not the oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check over by someone who knows - not the oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You can do more harm than good by running the engine off and on.

Fixing pulley alignment is a good test of an Indie's skill/knowledge.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I have a rebuilt 996 engine in the car I just bought. It's been running extremely well the last 2,000 miles but now it's making a strange noise. I'm thinking it's a belt that's loose because that's sort of the sound I'm hearing. It's usually as I start from a stop but not on the first start when the engine is cold - only once it's warm/hot.
Any ideas before I send it back to the shop?

When rebuilding an M96(I an completing one now) there are dozens of things you can make slight(&major) screw-ups on. I suggest a complete check-over by someone who knows - not the oil change monkeys!
For example the c/s bolt -it requires a very high,2-stage torque. If it is loose, the pulley will wobble. If it is belt squeal , put a straight edge across the outer flanges of adjacent pulleys(engine off!!!). You may be surprised to find misalignment.Mine had this and it caused the outer edge of the belt to fray slowly.
Fixing pulley alignment is a good test of an Indie's skill/knowledge. Ask here for more details in a new Thread?
Another weird one - the 3rd bolt securing the back of the a/c compressor- hidden awful access- missing/loose? If so ,it will wobble.
There are lots of little(?) things like this. And if they did not use new MEC bolts(or at least green loctite) in all the right places during the rebuild, who knows what is loose?
There are lots of locations where
new
bolts are required. Who knows if they just reused old stretched ones - with or without loctite.?
This is why I am doing my own M96 rebuild. It takes for ever and costs a fortune but...................
Could be a number of things. A new part could be failing. I'm not saying something inside the engine either, maybe just a water pump or an idler roller bearing.
I really don't advise you attempt to diagnose this yourself, in case the engine noise is something serious.
You can do more harm than good by running the engine off and on.
If the noise is nothing serious you'll not be out much money and if the noise is something serious maybe the rebuilder will cover this under some kind of warranty. (Fingers crossed.)
My advice is to err on the side of caution and flat bed the car to the shop and let a pro have at it.
