Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use of the forward center console section' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use of the forward center console section' (1 discussions). Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just got the new (to me) 996 back from the motor techs. Previous owner took really good care, just had an IMS failure. Got it for a decent price, with a rebuildable motor. It's a good, strong motor now, and going to add some bits and pieces. It's a 99, and the radio's got to go - but the area below has the ever-so-useful cassette trays. I've searched a bit, Pelican, etc - but haven't found much of anything interesting.
Do any of you know of anything actually useful or cool that can go in that spot?
Thanks so much - learning lots here!
Possible. I will be tracking the car some, and the saved space would be welcome. But I will be streeting it more..... and function would be nice as well.
I relocated the hvac controls to the lower console, moved the radio to the lower console (aftermarket upgrade), and custom integrated an ipad mini in the upper dash. It was actually relatively easy... This is a MkII, but the MkI's can be done in a very similar way. Full internet audio streaming, GPS nav, OBD monitoring, Lap timing, etc.
The cassette holder is removed by just pulling on it. (eject the cassette trays, grab them, and pull the entire thing out.)
The simplest add is another cubby tray.

Here's the perfect street/track setup for your 996. The

Odo reads 94K.......so that many...........but you didn't hear it from me........
Man - that Function First Kit looks great! What does it cost? And is installation same (or nearly) as the GT3 delete?
OP is sorry

pfbz - do you have a thread with this upgrade detailed?
Thanks! The forward console section is available in 3 configurations: Storage Bin, Climate Control, or Blank Face. (On the Blank version, you can custom mount whatever you need in or on the 0.25" thick plastic carpeted face.)
You can find full details, along with very thorough installation instructions, on the Product Page here:
