Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've got a 996TT manual with a blown transmission in need of a rebuild or replacement. Does anyone have first hand knowledge or experience with Vertex Auto and their transmission rebuild service? Local repairs are expensive so I'm open to either sending it out for repair or sending out the core and getting a repaired one back...the latter would be preferable b/c I assume it would be faster than having my actual trans rebuilt. Vertex pricing is good, but their reviews are quite mixed. Unfortunately, a lot of the reviews I've seen either don't apply to the trans rebuilding portion of their company (but, instead, the engine rebuilds, IMS upgrades, or just generic auto parts sales). Here's what I'm looking at: https://www.vertexauto.com/porsche-9...n-p-10738.aspx So, if you have first hand experience with Vertex Auto and their transmission rebuilds, I'd love to hear about it. Was it a smooth process and fair process? Did you get a quality product in a reasonable amount of time with minimal hassle? Or did you get screwed in any way (crappy product, took too long, didn't refund core charge, poor communication, etc)? If not Vertex, who would you recommend to rebuild a 996TT manual transmission? I'd also be open to the idea of simply replacing it with a used one so if you know where I can get one of those that'd be great too. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

My experience with them was with parts, and it wasn't good. It was basically a bait and switch - showing a photo of one part and shipping another (worth about 1/4th of what I paid for the part I was sold). In their defense, they refunded my money...Not until I raised quite a fuss though (they tried to "discount" the part I was sent to twice what it was worth...Uh - no thanks). They still show the photo's of the same parts they tried to rip me off on (they swore they'd remove the photo's and replace them with the proper ones...) For Porsche 996 transmission I'd look at G-Box Transmissions they are widely accepted as The Experts... https://www.gboxweb.com/

POST 3Original post

Check out the 996 TT forum. There are many knowledgeable people here too. Gbox is a popular and well reputed trans shop (CO). There are a couple of other highly reputed specialists that I've seen used on 996 tt forum and here. Can't speak for Vertex. Hey, I'm originally from Indy! Grew up on the NE side by not far from Q95 (Devonshire). GL

The transmission in one of my 996’s is in the process of being replaced by a GBox unit. I’ll provide feedback once the swap is complete

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16403320

What kinda price range are you looking at for the 996 trans swap? Vertex is $6500 assuming they refund the core charge...but I've seen at least one report where they screwed the guy over and didn't refund the core. On the other hand, other reviewers say they're fine to work with and they've been in business a very long time so one might assume that a total scam artist couldn't possibly survive for decades. The reviews are oddly inconsistent. If they're significantly less than a place like GBox, it may be worth the risk to give them a try. But if the prices are pretty close, it'd be better to go with the more reputable shop.

I had the same bad experience as dporto last year...Buyer beware!

GBox is $3k plus a $1k core for 996 C2 NA. Don’t know on a TT

POST 9Original post

Its a 722.6 Mercedes transmission with a different tail shaft and differential built into the bell housing.they are pretty stout and it may be acreluxtor plate that is bad. Unless the pan has lots of metal in it it may be something simple

POST 10Original post

Also did mine at Gbox, $2500 but that was a NA and just replaced the pinion bearing and some other stuff. Took 2-3 days, extremely fast.

POST 12Original post

The people at Vertex are incredible. The owner is an engineer with many patents, theyre not the usual shop just selling parts of the shelf. They also stand by their products, you cannot go wrong with them

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16405797

Nuthin' like a shameless plug... Yes, you can go wrong with them - as has been outlined in several posts here and several threads over the years. Based on my personal experience with them, there's no way I would buy a transmission from them (or anything else that cost $6500...).

POST 14Original post

cogscogs.com Give them a call you used to Brumos race team trans.

POST 15Original post

My only experience with Vertex was with a 915 gearbox and from 20 years ago. The rebuild was very light with only the synchros changed. When the box broke, I sent it back and they did not cover the first gear set, I had to source a used set which they installed for free. I don't know if I would call them dishonest, but it was one of the reason I started rebuilding my own gearboxes.

POST 16Original post

Also checkout Moorespeed Only heard good stuff from them and I think it's one of the places that actually knows how to rebuild engines and transmissions. This is a response I got from them: " Our last G96 rebuild ran $1840 plus parts and that is about 60% over the quoted prices you received from CMS and G-Box. If you are local there will be no shipping charges incurred but I will not be able to match those prices. Let me know if we can help you with the project. Thank you and have a nice day."

POST 17Original post

What exactly is wrong with your transmission? What failed?

He doesnt have a G96 transmission thats a 6 speed manual

Figured if they can rebuild G96s they could rebuild turbos.

. Looks like they rebuild manual gearboxes, he has an automatic, regardless it seems the OP has vanished like a fart in the wind.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 16408859

Describes Vertex as well. My advice to the OP would be NOT to stand down wind.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16408859

Ha! For some reason my subscription to this thread stopped emailing me when new posts were added after the first day or two. Anyway, the car is a 2001 996 turbo with a 6 speed manual and ~75k miles. It is currently drive-able in each gear including reverse. At low speeds, it makes a whining noise in first and reverse which is what's making us think there's a transmission problem. At higher speeds in all gears, it doesn't have any noticeable issues. In fact, it was being driven at highway speed with no weird noises or anything. It wasn't until it was brought down to a lower speed (specifically in first and reverse) that we even noticed the sound. So far, we've contacted several of the shops recommended in this thread. Thanks so much for your help so far. I'll double-check my subscription settings and hopefully be a bit more attentive/responsive going forward.

POST 24Original post

Is there oil in the transmission? Depending how far things are gone in there, rebuild might not be possible.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 16414284

definitely my fault I dont know where I pulled tiptronic from, disregard my nonsense, although you may want post in the 996 turbo section, as this is a different transmission than the Carrera one, and quite expensive I might add
