Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'sensor in the handbrake' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'sensor in the handbrake' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check emergency brake, and make sure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I'd double check the emergency brake, and make sure that the limit switch indicating the emergency brake position is working properly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My wife has a 2000 996 Cabriolet. Our problem is this. When we push the convertible top down button on the dash we get a flashing light on the IP but nothing happens. If I get out and put the key in the door and turn the cylinder to open the top folds down normally. This is our first 996 and my other Porsche's are a 944 and a 928, both hard tops. Any help is appreciated.
It's odd that it works with the key, but not on the dashboard. I'd double check the emergency brake, and make sure that the limit switch indicating the emergency brake position is working properly.
I had a similar issue about a year ago. Turned out to be a sensor in the handbrake. Two options: a) take it in for a new sensor, b) pump the handbrake about 50x to shake the old sensor loose.
At the time, mine would also work only with the key in the door, which led me to the handbrake sensor. If the engine latch is open, you'll notice the top will not go down with the key in the door. Just my 2 cents
The "PARK" light should be lit on your dash when you pull up on the hand brake. If it doesn't light, it's your handbrake switch. I just experienced this problem last weekend and it has gone away (for now). Eventually I'll have to replace the switch. I pushed the button on the hand brake lever and let it spring back a few times. I don't know if that did the trick or it was a coincidence, but it's working now.
You could also put a "Smart Top" in the car. 2002 on will let you open/close the top while moving @ up to 25 or so.

So this morning early I moved the car and tried the "pump" on the parking break. The light came on and the top worked. But this afternoon the switch is goofy. How do I get to the emergency brake sensor to clean it with deoxit?
Pull the ashtray and switch pocket on the console. The switch is accessible from there . I sprayed the plunger with deoxit and pushed it a few times. Job done!
Let us know please if that permanently 'did the trick'. Good to know as mine does the same every now and then. It goes through everything except, put the windows up again, which is the last part of the process. I can live with it as it only happend one time in 4 months (approx 80 trouble free tries)..
