Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace maf sensor in january' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check couple things' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The same thing happened one day last year and I suspected the MAF sensor and replaced it and all was good till now where exactly the same issue has started again.

Have you tried cleaning your throttle body and idle control valve?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2001 3.4 C2 tiptronic with 30K miles. This week, after an hour or so driving around the motor started cutting out.
First it cut-out while going along for about one second and then carried on normally.
Then at every stop as soon as I push the accelerator to get going it cuts out completely and all the lights on the dash come on. It then key-start normally straight away and gets me going and will cut out again when attempting to pull away from the next full stop.
It seems like an electrical cut out, not fuel and I feel it might be something to do with the throttle.
The same thing happened one day last year and I suspected the MAF sensor and replaced it and all was good till now where exactly the same issue has started again.
It was not a hot day and the temp gauge does show slightly to the right of centre, (it normally sits dead on centre). Volts and oil pressure show normal.
I think I'm going to clean out the radiators this weekend, just in case, but I don't think that's the issue.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Anthony
Thanks for the replies.
1. I do have a Durametric and it shows no faults.
2. I replaced the MAF sensor in January. Surely it hasn't gone again so soon?
3. I do not have any additional keys or weight on the ignition key.
Because it seems like an electrical fault, could it be something with the electronic throttle or, whatever component produces the spark for the plugs?
Anthony,
I would check a couple things.
1. check fuses to see if any are blown
2. try to discern if this is a problem in gear or can you put it in neutral and repeat the problem? If it only happens in gear it might be transmission related.
3. modules I would look closely at are the accelerator pedal and the throttle body. If you have the capability to clear codes I would pull the airbox out and have someone watch the throttle body as you rev the engine to make sure it is scheduling properly.
4. try to pull as many codes as possible

Have you tried cleaning your throttle body and idle control valve? Replaced the fuel filter? If no codes at all, the next step should be to verify the fuel pressure and flow rate.
You said "Then at every stop as soon as I push the accelerator to get going it cuts out completely and all the lights on the dash come on. It then key-start normally straight away and gets me going and will cut out again when attempting to pull away from the next full stop." To me, it sounds more like a fueling problem because it dies when you add load to the engine.
I did change the fuel filter about a year ago.
She runs perfectly normal once she's cooled down and for the next few weeks or maybe months.
Today I took her out for an hour or so and all was good.
It's difficult to isolate the problem when it's not occurring. I'll look up how to test fuel pressure and flow as you suggest. Do you know how it's done? I have the technical manuals, I'll have a peep in there.
Thanks.
You hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the test port on the fuel rail and do the tests. However, your problem seems quite intermittent, which will be quite challenging to diagnose.
