Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

He really didn't like it when I told him that his 2001 996 that had experienced intermixed oil and coolant THREE TIMES after cracking replacement cylinder heads THREE TIMES was due to the aftermarket bumper he was running.

The only "mod" was I had the IMS Solution installed during clutch change.

First, replaced the K&N drop in for an OEM paper filter.

Suggestion
I still have to replace the aftermarket radio and subwoofer for a OEM looking Continental unit.

Unsuccessful attempt
I changed the coding on my 2001 e39 to reflect the actual temperature more accurately. Still not completely accurate but better than when it left the factory.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In response to Jake's latest knowledge drop, I'll be switching back from RS to OEM engine mounts. Also planning to replace my double DIN Kenwood head unit in favor of a single DIN Continental or PCCM (if they ever add Android Auto) so I can do the GT3 center console delete.
Curious what mods people have done to their own car and then decided to undo.
In the nutshell, I spent $5,000+ undoing all the crap and putting my 996 back to stock. The only "mod" was I had the IMS Solution installed during clutch change.
Seen plenty of cars where way more than that number would be needed to undo someone else's "vision". Was more looking for mods you've done yourself then decided it's **** i.e. cat deletes, solid bushings, rattle can Skittles paint job...
Every mod I've done to my car is easily reversible. My favorites are the Fister mod, which I had done (by Fister) to a set of mufflers I bought from a fellow Rennlister, meaning that I still have my originals. Tied for second best are the mod to open/close my convertible top while moving, adding a Bluetooth adapter (TransitBlu) to my stock CDR-220 with factory HiFi, and adding Depo LED tail lights, while storing away my original tail lights. Third place would go to modding the side markers to flash with turn signals and adding smoked LED side markers.
We are having to create a huge checklist asking if certain mods are done to cars before we accept work these days. Its like that sheet at the Dr. that takes 20 minutes to fill out asking you all about health concerns, and family history of medical issues.
Last month we had one project that had so many mods made to it that the person ran out of space in the field to list it all. He was shocked when I told him that he's have to sell 90% of that crap on eBay for me to accept the job.
He really didn't like it when I told him that his 2001 996 that had experienced intermixed oil and coolant THREE TIMES after cracking replacement cylinder heads THREE TIMES was due to the aftermarket bumper he was running. No matter what I did my engine would suffer the same fate as long as that piece of garbage was hanging on the front of his car.
I love to modify things, and have been modifying Porsche cars for 29 years.. That said, the best performance mods for the 996 are the ones that aren't applied.
I would like to stress that the brand of mounts makes zero difference to my findings shown in this video, and my prior posts on this topic. Put simply, the OEM mount is the only mount that I have never seen impact the engine management system in some negative way regarding knock sensing, and safety retard.
Yes, that is an understatement....... even with collecting some Covid bargains....... and it all began with a simple "since you in lockdown and that leaky coolant tank"......new hoses, LN thermostat, water pump, factory coolant tank, new clutch, flywheel, bore scoping, IMS solution, main seal, Brombacher Oil pan, Driven oil, UAOS, plugs, billet spark plug tubes, billet oil cap (hate plastic), and new injectors certainly added up....not sure if I would consider most of this as "modding"............nothing like having sage advice backed up with hard data and experience, thanks everyone.
Currently undoing mods from the PO.
First, replaced the K&N drop in for an OEM paper filter.
Second, removed the wing on a spoiler🤦♂️
I still have to replace the aftermarket radio and subwoofer for a OEM looking Continental unit.
But Im definitely keeping the Fister exhaust
Is it a mod if you replaced something out of need with the non-OEM part?
My car was amazingly stock. Engine mounts were shot. I replaced them with the RSS mounts. They will be switched out shortly during the FSI Stage 1 installation.
Luckily, I'm too slow with mods to have done anything else...
I really like the (mostly) suspension upgrades I did to my car... Numeric shifter, Feal coil-overs, Eibach sways, Powergrid drop links, and Tarrett adjustable toe links. All new suspension arms/bushings, Michelin PS4S, and new OEM engine mounts. Aside from the lower stance the car looks stock. Drives amazing. I would not go back to stock for the items I upgraded.
There are a few mods I did that I didnt like and reversed... I didnt like upgraded shifter cables or aluminum gauge rings. I went through a few shift ***** that were nice, but not perfect for my grip style. At some point, I need to get rid of the very aftermarket looking radio that the PO installed. Sounds good, but doesnt match the interior well.
Side note, I removed the POs K&N but reinstalled it a week later. I much preferred the sound and the (butt dyno measured) performance increase.
Nope, because the stock gauge is worthless.
It was a "turbo look" bumper with "40% larger inlets for more cooling".
Too bad all that air stacked up in the corners of the radiators and wasn't being directed through the radiators.
Just another economic stimulus for my engine program.. Keep them modified, but don't get your feelings hurt when we rip all that garbage off and crush it with a tracked, armored vehicle. :-)
The performance of the cables themselves werent bad to me, but I could not tolerate the NVH. I also didnt see the huge improvement over stock. The shifter upgrade did much more for me than upgrading the cables.
It is the same with BMW gauges of that era. The gauge will show 'normal' at the 12 o'clock position when the coolant temperature is between 75C and 115C which is such a wide range as to be almost useless.
I changed the coding on my 2001 e39 to reflect the actual temperature more accurately.
Still not completely accurate but better than when it left the factory. These are the parameters after altering the code.
