Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The car's undercarriage can be inspected for any signs of accident damage/repair, and a good feeling for the health of the various systems determined.

For instance the PPI will have the car in the air -- after you have subjected the car to about an hour's run time on the road -- and can check for leak sign.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect any signs of accident damage/' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check leak sign' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I know a dealer of a marque brand that says he budgets a little money into every used car for repair issues after the car is sold even though he does not offer a warranty (not talking about third party extended--he offers those) on cars that are not certified.

I know you don't always get what you think you are getting, but that's why I buy used cars, because they don't have new car prices.

However, I do my own maintenance, so really a different story if you pay somebody to do your maintenance, then I would recommend any 996 get one.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Any previously owned car with an unknown service/maintenance service history, regardless of age or mileage, warrants a PPI IMO. Then again, a PPI is a matter of personal preference since some buyers do not have one done.
I didn't do one on my car, asked questions, it was a 31K mile 99. I know you don't always get what you think you are getting, but that's why I buy used cars, because they don't have new car prices.
However, I do my own maintenance, so really a different story if you pay somebody to do your maintenance, then I would recommend any 996 get one.
Good luck!
I would say that if it is still under a factory bumper to bumper warranty that you don't need a PPI unless you are buying it sight unseen. Reason being that I want someone to look for evidence of previous accident repairs.
You have received some good replies. I can add that there is no real cut off point.
Unless you feel confident the car is as it is being represented a PPI can be used to gain more confidence in the car's condition.
I have bought all my cars with no PPI. Early on this was when cars were simpler and easier to check out.
But my most recent used car purchase, my 2003 996 Turbo bought back in 2009, while I didn't have a PPI done I visited the car a number of times (when the dealer was closed) and crawled all over the car and looked underneath with a bright flashlight and felt I knew the car pretty darn good. It helped that the car was low miles -- 10K -- and obviously in pristine condition and it came with a 2 year, 100K mile CPO warranty.
But for some owners a PPI is a good idea. For instance the PPI will have the car in the air -- after you have subjected the car to about an hour's run time on the road -- and can check for leak sign. The car's undercarriage can be inspected for any signs of accident damage/repair, and a good feeling for the health of the various systems determined. Systems like the cooling system, brakes, tires, suspension, running gear, etc.
The PPI should also be able to pull the DME overrev counters and engine run time and timestamps so you can improve on your knowledge of the car. (For the Turbo I mentioned above, I got the CPO paperwork for the car before I bought it and was able to review the DME info.)
And last but not least do not forget a car can have accident damage repair at any time. I've seen new cars, unsold cars, on the car lot (the back lot, distant from the more public areas) with accident damage awaiting to be repaired and put back on the sales lot. My point is one shouldn't assume even a new car is without accident damage. However, I would probably not get a PPI on a new car, but one should still give a new car a thorough going over.
I would get a PPI under any circumstance other than if I was buying the car from a Porsche dealer certified or not. That would probably extend to Porsches bought from Mercedes, BMW dealer etc. I know a dealer of a marque brand that says he budgets a little money into every used car for repair issues after the car is sold even though he does not offer a warranty (not talking about third party extended--he offers those) on cars that are not certified. He just doesn't want to lose a $100,000 sale on a new car because he got yelped or google negative feedback.
It all depends on your individual situation. In shopping for 996TTs I had a PPI done on a car from Florida and ended up not buying it as a result. It had a coolant leak and a knock coming from the engine that the indie Porsche mechanic couldn't pinpoint. Add to that the seller really couldn't answer any questions about the car, so I didn't see it fit to fly to Florida to check it out in person.
The car I actually did buy was listed by a well known Rennlist member who sells cars on the side. He was very transparent about the condition and all the needed service/repairs that he had done. After multiple conversations and after looking at over 120 high res photos, I flew out and picked up the car without an independant PPI. Drove almost 700 miles home and have put another 400 on her and she's been absolutely as advertised/perfect.
