Hi!
I am about to pull the trigger on this ebay posting. It may not sell, so I may give them a call at the end of the auction. Any thoughts? I would rather buy a higher mileage rebuilt car, rather than spend a fortune at 60,000 miles dealing with issues on a 13 year old car.
996 turbo with 87K, and upgraded rebuilt engine 2 years ago
20" wheels (horrible)
$31K and change minumum bid
Thanks a lot in advance.
Cheers, S.
PPI, PPI, PPI.
There are other aspects of the car beyond the engine that should be checked out by an independent shop.
Although $31K is a great price for a turbo.
I was looking at that one the other day. I'm not interested in silver, but other than that I thought it looks like a decent car at a reasonable price. My guess is that it will take closer to $35,000 to buy it.
Deals are out there, but I'd deff take the advice of the others and let the seller know everything is dependent on ppi results. I'd be skeptical of getting a turbo for anything under $35k
Well, you can still spend a fortune on the car even if the engine requires no attention at all. There is the clutch accumulator, slave cylinder, RMS, water pump, spoiler hydraulics, serpentine belt idler/tensioner roller bearings, tranny/diff seals, radiators, to name some items that can turn up bad.
Whenever I come across a car with a rebuilt motor my first concern is who did the rebuild? What warranty, if any, is still in effect? How long ago was the engine rebuilt? What specifically was done? And why?
You need to visit the car and subject it to a thorough used car a used 996 Turbo check out. This starts with a test ride followed by a test drive.
Afterwards you go over the car with a fine tooth comb making sure everything from the headlights to the spoiler works.
Don't dismiss say a dark headlight. Could be a just a ~$100 bulb. But it could the igniter which can run nearly $800. A spoiler with leaking hydraulics can cost over $2K to replace if you go the factory new spoiler hydraulics route.
After your check out then you need to get a PPI for the car. This will have the car in the air and the tech can check the underneath for any leak sign. Additionally he can pull the DME over rev counters and time stamps and engine run time and go over this info with you.
