Oh, the sensor error later proved to be due to a bad sensor which I confirmed and then had replaced.
Leading evidence: 'due' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'due' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean bill of health' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Reported cause
It was hoped this was due to the oiling the engine and sensors received from the failed AOS and not an outright sensor failure.

I was out of town when the AOS was replaced and the service manager drove the car a number of miles not so much to deal with the smoking but because an O2 sensor error appeared.

Suggestion
If the car/engine receives a clean bill of health then you can address the smoking by just driving the car.

Suggestion
It is harsh in that it is a lot of work to clean the engine after an AOS failure.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I've done some searches but didn't find my exact issues so...
I've had my c4s for about 9 months and after a couple of months noticed intermittent white smoke on startup. Usually after sitting for awhile. It needed service anyway so they completed the ims/rms upgrade, new clutch and oil filter/change and... A new aos.
The day after I got kit back - more white smoke! Not sweet smelling seems to be oil? It also doesn't seem to be affecting anything and goes away after a few minutes much faster if driven.
The mechanic wants to see it for a few days to diagnose but I really don't want to throw good money after bad - does anyone have any ideas? Is my engine going to blow up?
alpine003's assessment is a bit harsh but close to reality. It is harsh in that it is a lot of work to clean the engine after an AOS failure. A lot of work and expensive and really doesn't need to be done.
Assuming there is not something wrong all the car needs, all the engine needs is to be driven.
After my Boxster's first AOS episode I was told the engine could emit smoke off and on upon start up some time after the AOS was replaced. A "50 mile" number was tossed about. I was out of town when the AOS was replaced and the service manager drove the car a number of miles not so much to deal with the smoking but because an O2 sensor error appeared. It was hoped this was due to the oiling the engine and sensors received from the failed AOS and not an outright sensor failure.
The AOS oiling the engine was so severe the engine suffered a fortunately benign hydraulic lock up as the tech was cranking the engine.
Oh, the sensor error later proved to be due to a bad sensor which I confirmed and then had replaced.
After the 2nd AOS I got the car back sans any real driving by the SM -- had the car repaired at the same dealer that did the 1st AOS -- after the repair and drove the car around 90 miles back to where I was staying. I do not recall any smoking by the engine.
After the 3rd AOS I picked up the car and I can't recall any smoking but the CEL came on not too many blocks away from the dealer. The error codes were misfires which I attributed to a combination of dampness from the car being washed and sitting and old coils and probably some oil residue from the AOS failure.
I cleared the codes and they didn't come back.
Might mention in all 3 cases of the AOS failure the engine was smoking quite heavily so there was plenty of oil being routed by the failing AOS to the engine.
You might accept the shop's offer to look over the car. If the car/engine receives a clean bill of health then you can address the smoking by just driving the car.
Absent any other signs of a problem, with a clean bill of health from the shop, I'd say just drive the car. You can help yourself and the engine by getting the engine fully up to temperature then parking the car for say half an hour. This will heat soak the rest of the engine including the manifold which runs rather cool. This heat will help any residual oil drain from the intake walls. There probably won't be much if any smoking on startup as the engine is still rather warm.
But with this driving my advice is as always though keep a sharp eye and ear on the engine for any signs of distress. If the engine starts to show any untoward behavior shut off the engine first and ask questions later.
Thanks for the advise guys. I've had it back for about 2 weeka but have probably put a lot less than 50 miles on it - I tend to drive it around town short trips. Now I appear to have a nice little oil puddle collecting in my garage????
I shared everything with the mechanic - usually sits most of the week and driven on the weekends.
I guess it's off to the shop again
