There is a Pelican article that describes removing the inner CV joint and boot, then sliding the boot off of the outer CV Joint (that's the one I need to replace).

Now, the question - if you're going to a shop, is it cheaper to just install a new axle vs pay shop time for the remove/repack/replace boot?

I've found lots of great DIY posts and videos to remove a front axle, but fewer references to replacing boots without removing the axles.

So I'm wondering if anyone has tried replacing a front outer boot by disconnecting the inner, removing it and its boot, the sliding the outer boot the entire length of the axle to get the old boot off and slide the new boot on.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've found lots of great DIY posts and videos to remove a front axle, but fewer references to replacing boots without removing the axles. There is a Pelican article that describes removing the inner CV joint and boot, then sliding the boot off of the outer CV Joint (that's the one I need to replace). I'm just not sure they're referring to a front axle. So I'm wondering if anyone has tried replacing a front outer boot by disconnecting the inner, removing it and its boot, the sliding the outer boot the entire length of the axle to get the old boot off and slide the new boot on. Is there room to do that? I'm going to have a closer look myself, before I attempt it, but I'm just sitting at a desk trying to plan for the weekend. If I have to take the axle nut off and separate the ball joint etc., That takes a little bit more planning.

POST 2Original post

NO WAY... Seriously, you're just asking for trouble. To do the outer boot you have to remove the inner CV joint - so in essence you have to do both regardless. It's not a difficult job, just involved and MESSY! make sure you have a few pairs of Nitrile gloves and lots of paper towels and brake cleaner/carb cleaner or Kerosene handy... and a clear space to work in (or else everything close by will have grease on it). Good luck

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - I guess I'll get a little more prepared than just having parts on hand.... It's not like I'm using it a lot and it's urgent, it just bugs me when I know something's broken and I should be fixing it. It's a C4 cab. I've never owned a convertible, so I thought I should at least try it. I bought it at the end of October and the lousy whether came immediately - so I rode the bike or drove with the hard top on until last week. If summer comes to Toronto, I want to be ready! When I switched to the summer tires, I found the grease on the wheel, then of course the torn boot (small, but that really doesn't matter other than to minimizes the grease fling). Now that I've identified it, I spend my "work at home" time sitting at my computer, but watching videos on how to fix it - just like I would do if I was at the office. I'm essentially pretending the car isn't 30 feet away....

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finally got around to it today. I did not remove the brake caliper or the tie rod end. I disconnected the stabilizer link and headlight control thingamabob, then the lower control arm at the chassis, and the diagonal brace at the chassis. I was able to get the axle out then. I cleaned both joints, repacked, re-clamped and put it back together. I probably spent almost half the time cleaning up the hub and suspension parts. The only issue is that the ABS (and I assume as a result, the PSM light) is on now. Could that be from turning the ignition to ON while the hub was out, and will jt reset after a couple of drives or should I clear it?

POST 5Original post

Helpful thread. Now, the question - if you're going to a shop, is it cheaper to just install a new axle vs pay shop time for the remove/repack/replace boot?

No - and... No! I put this job off for a long time because I was just dreading it. It really wasn't bad at all - probably a 3 hr. job if you're clean and meticulous. The key is to be sure to have all the necessary parts and tools on hand when you start the job (the first time I did it I had either two outer or inner boots - they're different and not interchangeable. Unfortunately for me, I had them sitting around for a long time before I did the job, so I was caught by surprise). In any case, a shop is going to bang you for "book time" if you have it done there, and paying their price for the parts is just silly. When I realized I had one wrong boot, I called the local dealership to see if they had one in stock - of course they didn't, and they wanted like $80 (for a $20 part)...
