If they're careful and clean, I can't see why they can't just focus on the diff.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I cant find tiptronic differential rebuild instructions for an early 996 C2 anywhere on the net, manuals, boxsters, no 996. I know the official line is complete replacement but I can't believe bearing replacement is rocket science or has to cost 3K+. A bold statement I know but let me explain.
My car is suffering from diff whine, noticeable when power on, quiet when off. My local Porsche specialist suspects a pinion bearing and that sounds reasonable after 126K miles. The tiptronic box is fine. Quick changes, responsive kick-down, no noises, juddering etc. Several companies offering gearbox services want a complete gearbox rebuild. Why? I know they have to warrant their work so I suppose they want to be sure but if it is only bearings I don't see it. I realise they have to open the whole box because it's the A96.00 ZF which has the gearbox and diff in the one casing, not the Mercedes split-casing type. If they're careful and clean, I can't see why they can't just focus on the diff.
So my questions, assuming I want to get someone to change just the 3 bearings (pinion, inner and outer diff) and by the way I won't be doing it myself
a) am I being naive?
b) can't any decent mechanic do it?
c) is there a documented procedure for it anywhere or someone on the forum with prior experience?
d) would it be cheaper to convert it to a manual?
e) if yes/no/no/no can I run it asis maybe with an oil change and permanent ear-plugs but for how long before it gets terminal?
f) if yes/no/no/no/no can I at least get some sympathy?
I have a very quiet engine, no IMS or bore-scoring issues and everything has been done on my car, brakes, coolant and fuel lines, suspension, plugs, coils, injectors, it's a nice car, full service history stamped up, a proper car. Not worth as much as a manual of course which is why I can't just shell out 3-4K on the less desirable tiptronic version and if I try to sell it, it's going to be obvious it has an issue and it may be hard to shift anyway. Shame to waste such a good car on what is sadly a rare but very expensive problem.
Yes, I can buy a used box but how will I know that hasn't the same problem? Most ebay sellers are quite happily asking 1300-2000 for an equally high-mileage box without any mention of it's condition. Who's buying them?
All replies appreciated....we live in hope!
Thanks
Stuart
