Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had it changed prematurely because I wanted to see inside the filter since it was installed when I had the IMS, RMS, and clutch done.
Leading evidence: 'Install when i had the ims, rms, and clutch done' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install when i had the ims, rms, and clutch done' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These have been used for decades and even at 100k miles I wouldn't expect to see a failure.

I use him for stuff like mounting tires which is what he was doing when I told him to go ahead and change the oil.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had my oil changed yesterday. I bought a MAHLE filter off Pelican parts for my 996. Part number OX 128/1. Check out the pics of my old filter and the filter I bought. You can see theyre both MAHLE OX 128/1 filters but the new one I bought obviously has a hole that is smaller in diameter and my Indy shop had to use a different filter than the one I gave him.
Can anyone explain this?
Dont know it matters but that old filter is only about six weeks old. I had it changed prematurely because I wanted to see inside the filter since it was installed when I had the IMS, RMS, and clutch done.
The good news is he was able to get a Purolator L25316 oil filter on there which, according to Purolator, is also an exact fit for the 996. MAHLE should write on the box, MUST JAM THIS BABY ON THERE WITH EXCESSIVE FORCE.
Or get the LN spin-on oil filter adaptor and spin-on type oil filter. A spin-on oil filter is better, especially if you get one with no oil filter bypass in the filter. The canister filters have a builtin oil bypass that weakens with age. So, always a good idea if you're going to stick with it, every 2-3 oil filter changes replace the entire canister. You can get one from Porsche for around $29.
It seems exceedingly wasteful to replace the canister every 2 to 3 changes, they work properly for many many years.
Spin on isn't better, other than it lets you do the ims solution.
I wouldn't jam the new filter on, as you can crush them that way, but if you turn it as you push it on it goes on easily.
While I accept your argument, why not error on the side of replacing such a cheap item? If the spring gets weak, you are passing unfiltered oil through your engine. 2-3 oil changes is close to 15,000 miles, and there is a lot going on in there. Safer and better to just replace it. I believe for $29 you get a kit, a new canister and filter. I never did like that plastic canister! Seems a weak point in my mind.
If the overpressure releif valve fails and you aren't alerted to this by the oil pressure gauge being pegged at max your engine is toast anyway. If the engine is functioning properly, you will know if the valve is open, and there really isn't a lot going on in there. These have been used for decades and even at 100k miles I wouldn't expect to see a failure. Why add to waste? As far as the plastic, plenty of plastic has a higher tensile strength than steel. You can crack them through overtightening, but other than that I've never seen one crack on any car. Every now and then a spin on does fail and dump, but honestly either system's catastrpohic faliure is so rare it isn't worth considering. The real purpose of spin on filters was to make lube jobs quicker and easier.
Your post prompted me to compare the Porsche oil filter to the Mahle filter. Both have a 25mm center hole and are positively identical except for the Porsche part number replacing the Mahle name.
Mahle filter at FCP Euro $9.95
Porsche Filter list price at dealer parts counter $26.12
Porsche is such a rip off for certain parts such as this oil filter.
Both install just fine. Perhaps your tech wanted a (poor) reason to reject the oil filter you provided him.
I just used the same Mahle filter a couple weeks ago for my oil change. No excessive force necessary.
Not sure what your tech is talking about.
Edited to add - for those of you that aren't aware, rockauto.com has great prices and fast shipping for oil change supplies.
oh you did not just post that! Nooooooo.
hes a buddy of mine and only charged me $15 for the Purolator so hes not trying to screw me. Didnt even charge me for labor, just cost of the 0w40 (yes, I said it) at $7 a quart and the filter.
He told me that in his line of work if you have to force something on there its better to err on the side of caution. And that MAHLE filters should come with a rubber mallet after I told him it indeed was the correct filter. He also said the Purolator fit perfectly so 🤷♂️ . His shop isnt a Porsche specific shop. I use him for stuff like mounting tires which is what he was doing when I told him to go ahead and change the oil. I have a certified Porsche and Audi tech buddy that does the more complex stuff on the side. Hes doing my engine mounts next weekend for only $100. Which isnt complex but he has access to a lift and I dont and Im not using a Jack to lift my engine to install the mounts. Thats a little scary to me given my lower skill level.
