Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2004 C2. Final step of my engine assembly and I'm stumped on where this cannister mounts. I guess in my pictures I assumed it was so obvious that I didn't take a picture of where the bolt mounts to and now I do not have an open bolt hole to attach it to. So this picture is of the cannister right at intake of 6 cylinder and I'm trying to figure out where that long threaded bolt goes to mount the cylinder. The only bolt hole in that area is the bolt hole for mounting the fuel injector rail but I have a bolt in there already from putting the fuel rail back on. This is the long bolt at around 2 o'clock in the picture from the cannister. The bolt has a long tube that it goes through to the mounting point. Unless there was some kind of bracket that went on the fuel rail that I am now missing? I appreciate any help that can be given.

POST 2Original post

Unless there's something drastically different on the M96.03, you'll have some back tracking to do.

POST 3Original post

Yup goes under the intake. Why do it right when u can do it twice .

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

At least on mine, there are two of those cannisters. I already have the one installed that goes under the intake. This one sits as pictured. One hose goes to the back of the intake (bank 2 side) and the second connection goes to a hose still in the car (connected once the engine is back in place). This was a picture right before i removed it from the engine. I know it goes there.

POST 5Original post

The second canister is only on cars that have PSE. Is is the vacuum reservoir that connects to the solenoids in the exhaust system. It mounts near cylinder 4, not 6 as you show. i didnt like the mount, so made my own in a similar location that seemed easier.

POST 6Original post

I found another pic that may explain it more clearly

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Coopduc. It seems however that ours our mounted in different positions? The picture I included shows the mounting bolt going near cylinder 6 (unless my camera angle is playing some kind of trick on me). You see in that picture where rubber fuel line connects into the fuel rail at 6. It's also sitting directly over the oil pressure sender. At the same time, I do not see where it mounts where I have it pictured. I guess it doesn't matter as long as my vacuum line going to the PSE bracket in the car will reach. Where is your other vacuum line going from this cannister? It looks like you are connecting to the front of the intake above cylinder 4? Mine goes to the back of the intake at 6 as shown in this picture.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm going to check to see if the thread size of this long bolt is the same as the bolt holding down the fuel rail above 6. It's possible that I added a bolt to the fuel rail that was the same size as the others and just don't remember doing that. In you last picture coopduc, it looks like you are bolting into the hole at the end of the intake manifold at 4. At that location in mine, I am bolting in the bracket that holds the various electric lines such as the two main connectors for the wiring harness. I can barely reach my vacuum connection at the back of the intake (towards cylinder 6) if I were to mount it around that point. Frustrating that I had almost everything well documented when I disassembled until this last point and unfortunately I don't have any pictures prior to this that may show a different angle as this was my first picture of disassembly. It's also possible that bolt isn't even attached in my first picture. It looks like the bracket that holds the junctions (still connected in the car) must go through the top of that bolt as I don't see where it would mount

POST 9Original post

Here’s a pic from another car (not mine) clearly showing the canister mounting near cylinder 4. if you PM me your email address I’ll send you the tech sheets from Porsche with detailed instructions for installing PSE in a 996.

POST 10Original post

I have a C4S with PSE, and my canister is farther back also. Definitely not on cylinder 4. It's between 5 and 6, but without getting my boroscope out, I can't see how it's attached.

POST 11Original post

Interesting, maybe the location was changed at some model year?? Here is the relevant page from the tech sheet, paragraph 4.26 says to use the rearmost fuel rail mounting bolt location... in any event, I don’t think the location is critical, unless you are a stickler for originality.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Coopduc, Thanks for the info. The more I looked at it last night, I was pretty convinced that it must bolt into one of the fuel rail spots. I'm going to start at the rear most spot between 4 & 5 as that is the easiest to get to with the engine in the car. I agree, position doesn't matter as long as it fits.

POST 13Original post

Ah, I didn't realize that some vehicles had a second vacuum canister. Good to know. I only have 1 on the left hand side.(That's all I've seen on other people's cars too)
