Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been kicking around a purchase and will be putting two other vehicles up for sale to fund a c4s purchase very soon with the goal of a spring purchase. Question is where have you folks found your cars? I have been looking at Rennlist, Pelican, eBay and the pca mart. What are some other good venues for used 996's?

POST 2Original post

Pretty much covers it. Throw in Autotrader, Craigslist, and cars.com.

POST 3Original post

Agree, set up email alerts on Autotrader, cars.com, and ebay. RL listings are high quality when they come up. Good luck and enjoy the search. C4S is a great configuration.

POST 5Original post

I found my car on Autotrader, at Park Place Porsche in Dallas. I had alerts on Autotrader and Cars.com. I'd search Craigslist every morning too. I looked for a year before I found the car.

POST 6Original post

Found mine on AutoTrader. Cruise the used car lots in your area. I see tons of 996s on the lots here. Of course, 99.6% of them are vastly overpriced at the used car lots.

POST 7Original post

They are only overpriced if they can't sell them.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 11920585

Excellent point you make there. All I can figure is that a lot of buyers don't do much research if they are paying anywhere near what I see them asking (I cruise the lots all the time, just for fun). OP, our region's PCA also has a classified section on the monthly magazine. That's usually local guys that are well-known, so a good source. Ask around your PCA, usually some good leads there, too.

POST 11Original post

Cuda, I think the guys that pay the high lot prices do so because the lot gets them financed. Most folks with cash or there own way of financing will buy from private sellers or will only buy from a lot if the price is right. With these cars being as cheap as they are many customers are working class folks and not the same as the original buyers were when the cars were eighty thousand dollars. The only reason to buy from a dealer is if it has the perfect car for ones tastes or a way to finance that the customer doesn't.

POST 12Original post

Cuda and JD are absolutely correct. I eyed my car for 3 months and waited for the right time to strike. I found it on craigslist listed for 38k 3 years ago wich was waaaaay too high. For sure it wasnt going to sell for that price then he dropped it to 35k and passed on to a dealer as a consigntment car. The dealer had it for a month at 35k so i called and made an offer for 30k. After a long negotiation they sold it to me for 31k.

POST 13Original post

I have been searching for a C4S and have looked at a few C2's as well for the last few months. Seems like the best shot is from a private seller and also every deal I am seeing is mostly out of state. I can continue to hold out to find one within reasonable distance but my patience is running out. I found one for the right price but shipping will be required. You also have to take into account maintenance you will be spending. There are a lot for sale but a lot that are overpriced.

POST 14Original post

I bought an engined damaged 02 from Raby. Then had them do the engine since it was there already.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 11921038

Now that is the way to do it! I would love to find a car with a reconstructed engine by Raby and co. It is tempting to just have him do an engine and find a roller to put it in.

POST 17Original post

Found mine two weeks ago locally on craigslist, was also listed on cars.com. My search was about 2 months long. Great Car, fair price.

POST 18Original post

Craigslist for me also. But I think Auto Trader is a good site without too many scams.

POST 19Original post

Get a friend who has a Manhein account. You will flip when you see what you can find there....

POST 20Original post

Searchtempest lets you search multiple Craig's List regions, which is handy if you're willing to travel to get your car. This is actually how I found my 996: at the time there were many more for sale in California than here in Washington.

POST 21Original post

ManheiM is a nationwide, dealer auction network. To actually buy cars you must have a dealer license and auction credentials, FYI

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 11922864

I can buy through Manheim, it is not a good tool for 996 shopping. The newer the car, the more useful the auctions are. For the older stuff there are still good cars to be had, but they are few and far between.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 11923797

Concur. I have had a dealer license for 13 years but have never bought a Porsche through the auction. I just don't feel like I have the opportunity to properly evaluate a Porsche at the auction. Funny because I have bought easily 200+ cars at the auction over the years including high end stuff like Land Rovers, Jaguars and an E55 AMG. Always chicken out when a P-car comes up though. BTW - Have bought all 4 of my Porsches on ebay.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 11924105

I've actually had fantastic luck buying Porsches through Manheim. Their condition reports are spot on, and I only buy very highly rated cars. No records is a downside, I simply budget for a full service to insure that they are up to date. There just aren't many good older cars on there, 987/997 is about as old as they get, and there are far more .2 cars on there. I have a really nice 2009 Cayman and 2010 Boxster being shipped to me right now.

POST 25Original post

It's fun to see the different perspectives. If a guy is wanting to buy a car it looks to him as though most the ones he finds seem to be overpriced, if a guy is selling one he looks at the prices others are selling for and says "it looks like they're giving them away."

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a PPI scheduled for next week on a c4s that I drove today. Stay tuned.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

POST 29Original post

I found mine on Craigslist after shopping for about eight months . I am very happy with my purchase

POST 30Original post

Found mine Dirty with a Flat Battery in the back of a used car lot in Hilton Head SC...There was a Boxster S on the front of the lot that caught my eye...They just purchased my 911 from an Estate Sale for dirt cheap..I asked how much they'd take for it...Checked the VIN, autocheck, Carfax, and went through the car myself and picked it up for a steal... Ken

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Another PPI scheduled for Tuesday. Drove this car yesterday and liked it... Sport exhaust sounds great!

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PPI good.... Negotiations complete.... Deposit accepted. Should close the deal early next week. '03 c4s in seal Grey with granite interior! Will post a few pics when I get the car!

POST 33Original post

Nice colors - esp. the seal grey. My absolute favorite Porsche color.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 11960854

I had a seal grey Boxster and had wheels powder coated black. Loved that car. Fabspeed exhaust on it. Also had a 356 that we painted seal Grey to match the boxster and had the wide 5 wheels painted black with aluminum drum skins. That seal grey color is fantastic!

I learned that as kid, my dad would always by pass all the other cars and go to the back. I grew up with Hillmans, Ford Anglias, and Studebakers that's were I got my desire to only drive a unique car.

POST 38Original post

I found mine through PCA, but I had something specific in mind and was looking for as close to perfect as I could find. I bought a local concours winner.

POST 41Original post

Found mine on CL in Va. , flew there and drove home via the BRPkwy !!
