Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Here is a pic from a post by Captain Obvious....he changed his 4S to rear wheel drive.
Leading evidence: 'Replace 4s' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'better option than trying' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace 4s' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

That is probably the better option than trying to find a new tranny.

At least this process has been logged here should anyone else need to replace an early 996 C4 transmission with a newer variety.

I recently bought a G96/31 gearbox to replace my G96/30.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently bought a G96/31 gearbox to replace my G96/30. Upon installation.. I've run into a snag. Notice the front driveshaft output shaft, it's about 2" longer. Has anyone else dealt with this? I assume the only option (besides finding another G96/30 box would be to either replace the front drive shaft or bring it into a machine shop to have it shortened and balanced? Please note in the picture that the old transmission case is just the case, without the internals in it. Therefore the output shaft for the front drive shaft isn't in the picture.
I'm remembering back when I dropped motor with the tranny attached. When I dis-engaged the drive shaft on my C4 I slid it forward. I'm thinking the driveshaft is 2 pieces with one pc sliding into the other. If it were one pc how would you remove it to begin with? Similar to a driveshaft on a farm implement when hooking it up to the PTO on the tractor.
Weird, I would look into it further and see if there are any other differences. Please share what you find out. It shouldn't be too expensive to get a driveshaft made. That is probably the better option than trying to find a new tranny.
Here's some photos of the drama.. It was making noise when I bought it, so I am not sure what was the root cause of a first gear that looks/looked like this..
Here is a pic from a post by Captain Obvious....he changed his 4S to rear wheel drive. How much distance (play) do you have if you push the driveshaft forward?
I've got it at my shop, so I am not 100%. I just got off the phone with them and they 'believe' there is enough room on the slip joint. We'll find out soon enough
Well.. The driveshaft on for the G96/30 transmission is, infact, different than the one for the G96/31. The G96/31 is roughly 2" shorter. As a fatter of fact, the drive shaft for the 996 AND 997 turbo cars is exactly the same as the G96/31 uses. Strange facts from the Porsche camp.
Thank you, I was able to procure one from the owner of my shop. They converted his EVOM775 997 to a 2wd RS race spec. So they had the left over parts. It worked out great.
