BTW I took mine off after I ran off the road into a barrier in the snow.

It's not really much different than sticking every emblem you can buy at the Porsche parts counter to the back of your 996, thought it's probably a bit more tasteful.

Suggestion
In all fairness to Hurdi I have seen a lot of newbies coming in and immediately asking how they can change the 996.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I see lots of posters trying to disguise the fact that they own and drive a 996. Altering bumpers and headlights and wishing they had a 997 etc and the list could go on. It sickens me to see this happening. I see the untouched 996 as a gorgeous work of art and the 'deal of the century' and see no reason for any alteration. PLEASE don't get into the IMSB crap. I don't want to go down that road. Your views on the matter would be appreciated. I am proud to drive a Porsche 996, what say yawl.
I have recently been looking at both series 1 997's and 996's....Both c4s models.
I have concluded that I prefer the 996 over the 997....although I'd rather have a 991!!
The faults of the 996 are greatly exaggerated in my opinion.
I think it is an absolute hallmark of an achievement for the company. Lots of technical achievements with that car, just as there was with the 928.
I won't be ashamed in the least. Certainly proud.
To me these cars join a select group of cars that look so good your eyes will linger on them just a little longer than normal and if driven will never be forgotten. I feel lucky to have one.
The 996 is one of the best cars I have ever owned and one of the worst. It truly is an automotive enigma. Great to drive, clean, and pamper yet plagued with some really unique issues. Not putting down the model at all. I truly enjoyed taking care of it more than driving it. I think its most important contribution to the 911's is it eventually causes one to move on to a TT or 997. A "driving contradiction" of sorts (thank you Kris Kristofferson) that will always be a step child or stepping stone.
You don't get it do you? Some treat 996's from one end of the spectrum to the other. Some are regarded as garage queen show cars, others as $3000 rollers. If that's not a contradiction, I don't know what is. Thought even you would have got that.
Considered a very clean 996 turbo. The interior seemed old - too much carbon fiber. Ended up with base 997. Looks newer and while not as fast as a turbo still fun
KrazyK, I could be more than just happy driving mine forever and never using it for a stepping stone to anything. I can have anything I want and there are plenty of cars that I like but this is one of them and whats unbelievable its probably the one that costs the least. I don't know how you can think it's PLAGED WITH UNIQUE ISSUES as its few perceived problems can be addressed easy enough if desired.
Hey, I didn't express an opinion on your the merits of your statement one way or the other. Frankly I think it's hilarious when you poke a stick in the beehive just to stir things up around here. Your troll thread on the 944 forum from a couple of years ago was epic and is probably one of the top 5 best threads ever on Rennlist (monkey vs bear being #1). Hurdi lobbed you a softball and I'd be disappointed with you if you let it pass. Hey, you already got one to bite.
I love mine is my first Porsche and is a 911, unfortunately our forum is plagued with Trolls, people who owned in the past and still here, if you have a bad relation for x reason please, get out, move on with your life, also lately we have a lot of lurkers asking should I buy it? not? this cars are cheap, waiting to get one with all maintenance records, IMS upgrade by Flat 6 innovations and pay $13000.
I lost count, on how many cars I owned, some cars were such a horrible experience and I don't live in those forums, bitching and complaining about them, it was my personal experience, I didn't like them, I sold them, end of the story.
Going back to the 996, smooth lines, unique headlights (like DDD breast either you like it or not), I don't have to give my first born to pay for maintenance, I can pack 4 people on it, fast, stable, luxurious, with a ridiculous price, what else do you want????
Yes, absolutely, Tha'ts why i usually only drive at night when its dark, so i can't be seen.
When i am forced to drive in day light i have a couple mild disguises I use
I also hide the 996 in the garage so neighbors and passersby-ers cant see it.-
Though not intended as a troll post, I agree it did become very hilarious.
Im certainly not the only one to think this. The issues are indeed unique to the NA M96. There are pros and cons with the 996. That's why I said the "best" I have owned.
So any comment that is truthful but a negative about the 996 implicates "troll"? That would make JR the biggest "troll" on the forum. I don't live with my head stuck in the sand. Maybe you should try being a realist.
I love my 996 and don't really car what anyone else thinks. I don't see the fuss over the headlights or whatever else makes the 996 looks such a hot topic. I sold my 84 Carrera for my 996 and haven't looked back. Both look great and both looked have the unmistakable look of a 911 but I can drive my 996 every day into work without worrying about potentially breaking down or overheating in summer traffic.
I just tinted my windows very dark, make sure I go faster than traffic so they can't get a good look inside, and park at the far end of the parking lot to avoid the shame...
Seriously, who thinks about this crap? Except for PCA and forum members, most people couldn't tell you what decade a 911 they might see is from.
Life is about creating memorable moments you remember and your family will remember you by. So far my plain Jane 996 C2 cab has created many good memories. Every time I put my 2 and 11 year old daughters to drive them to school they have a big grin on their faces, especially with the top down. Every time I start the engine they make wrooooom wroooom sounds and smile. Same when I pick them up. They rather drive in my old, cramped, plagued, undervalued, harsh riding car than in moms new Audi S6 which is a wonderful car, too, but less memorable. Years from now they will look at our old pics and will grin again, remembering those trips to school and daycare. The 996 is for me and my kids a memory-maker, and that tops it's all other qualities.
Anyone who feels "shame" over driving ANY car has some serious emotional problems - no less a Porsche 911 (uh yeah, it's a 911- Carrera - most people don't even know hat a "996" is). as for this...

You sir are a
Moron
with a capital M...sorry I couldn;t help myself - PC be damned. It's a car for f*#Cks sake! Jeeeeezzzzzzzzzz
When I went looking for my third Porsche I originally searched for one I had owned before...a 964 or 993. I had never taken the time to research a 996. And then I saw one and just to say I had driven one I took it for a spin. The car completely won me over and I drove it home two hours later.
I love the headlights, they are works of art in themselves. I love the interior...in is clean and functional. I love the new dash...I think it is well organized and...very Porsche. I love the steering wheel because it isn't cluttered up with X-box-like controls. And I love the little bit extra interior room...it make four people going out for dinner a genuine reality.
And ofcourse I love driving it. When that engine comes to life in the echo chamber of my condo garage it has a great throaty cackle. The steering is perfectly weighted for my taste. I was thrilled that my car came with its original 17" wheels...again, my taste. Of course it is much more car than can be fully used on most public roads...but even the simplest twist of tarmac in this car makes me smile.
I am aware of the virtues of the cars that came before and after...however I know I would not be as happy as I am every time I drop down into the seat of my 996. It not only has the things I want, it also doesn't have the things I don't want.
Low production numbers is not what makes a collectible classic...only a great driver can ever become one. That is why I rank the 996 as a car that will only increase in stature...no matter what the transitory market price.
Why would anyone buy one of these and then be ashamed of it?
Mine has headlight covers on it. They were there when I bought it. I'm about 50/50 on removing them. The thing holding me back is the potential for damage to either the lenses or covers. I don't know how they were put on and may just make the situation worse!
If you're ashamed of your 996 give it to me. I'll take it and drive it proudly.
I was thinking about it, and the headlight covers probably look a little better on an aero car because it seems to be more in theme with the body work.
Me too.
I really don't even understand this entire thread.
It screams "I'm actually ashamed but I need re-assurance from the community that I shouldn't be".
And Hurdi - you could start by removing all that extraneous badging from your car that you put on to emulate what you saw on the 991.
What a f*****g stupid thread.
Maybe you can spray some WD-40 on it and it'll be less shameful to own.
The 996 is the most beautiful car I've ever owned. The fact that I was able to purchase it for less than the cost of a loaded Honda Element is a feather in my cap, not something to be ashamed of.
I purchased real estate when the market was down - and I'm not especially ashamed of that, either.
Hurdi, I don't know if your meds just hadn't kicked in yet or what, but do yourself a favor and lock this thread so it will go away.
Oh - and it's "y'all," not "yawl." Damn British can't speak the language.
In all fairness to Hurdi I have seen a lot of newbies coming in and immediately asking how they can change the 996. So it's not the long time members who answered this thread but those who see a cheap Porsche and want to figure out how to make it look like a more expensive Porsche.
For those of us who have stuck around for a while the answer, of course, is "no we're not ashamed."
I used to think that way when I was younger too. I remember wanting to buy a base air cooled 911 and purchasing a body kit to make it look like a 959. But now that I have my 996 I could care less about the headlights. Sure I like the way the 997 C4S looks better than mine but most people can't tell my car from a 991 anyway so it really doesn't matter and I'm saving $80k at the same time.
I guess I don't understand why driving a fake 959 would be less "shameful" than driving a stock 911. Along those lines, I don't understand why slapping a new front bumper on a 996 would assuage any feelings of inferiority about the car.
Most of the population know nothing about Porsche models, so they don't care about 996 headlights. The remaining few are going to think you're more of a tool for trying to disguise your car and pass it off as something else.
Hurdi seems incapable of differentiating between people who are ashamed of their cars and people who want to do things to make their cars stand out. For most people (the vast majority, I suspect), adding a new spoiler to your 996 isn't about being ashamed of your car - it's about personalizing the car and making it your own. It's not really much different than sticking every emblem you can buy at the Porsche parts counter to the back of your 996, thought it's probably a bit more tasteful.
Certainly, there are some folks (like the guy last week who wanted to remove the ugly 996 "skin" and replace it with something else) who want to hide what they own. Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I think these folks are the minority.
Anyone who is ashamed of their car should sell it and buy something else. As for me, I'd rather drive my 996 than just about anything else out there. I love the car. If I allow my opinion about stuff I spent my hard-earned money on to be swayed by some Internet people I don't even know, I
deserve
to be unhappy.
I saw my car in an online listing and said, "Holy s**t, I've gotta have that car," so I guess I feel differently than someone who thinks, "Wow, I sure wish I could drive a 911, but all I can afford is this lowly 996, so I guess I'll buy that." I don't see the point in buying something you know going in isn't what you really want - and if you
did
buy something you really wanted, why would someone else's opinion on an Internet forum matter?
I threw up in my mouth a little when I first saw my 996, but I bought it anyways. Alcohol and My ugly headlight therapy group has helped me through some rough times. A friend once told me the 996 is hot, but "office" hot. You know like that girl from the office you would tap, but compared to the rest of the world maybe not so hot.
I love mine.
I'm ashamed of myself for reading and actually posting something in this thread...
I remember the first time that I ever "noticed" the headlights on a 996. It was a MK II car and it pulled up behind me in traffic waiting to leave after a Formula 1 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I knew very little about Porsche 911s at that point other than the fact that I wanted one. As I watched the silver 911 pull up behind me, the driver activated the left turn signal. I could see the amber light flashing in the driver's side rear view mirror of my Saab 9-5 Aero. I remember thinking to myself: "Wow, those headlights on the new Porsches look really cool". I was uneducated in the world of Porsche 911s at that point, and I didn't know that I wasn't supposed to like the headlights.
A few years later, I bought a 996 C4S. I didn't buy it because it was a good value or because I cared what people thought about it. I bought it because I wanted a Porsche 911 for myself. That car remains one of my favorite cars that I've ever owned. For me, that car was most special when I was driving it down a curvy mountain road without another car in sight. I also really enjoyed washing and detailing the car and really appreciating the lines of the body work. I no longer own that car, but I didn't sell it because of the way it looked or the way it made me feel when I drove it. If I really thought about the way that car made me feel, then I probably wouldn't have sold it. I had nearly 100K miles of driving enjoyment behind the wheel of a 996.
996 owners drive these cars by choice. They were hand-picked. These aren't typically cars that were handed down as a worn out P.O.S. from your older brother because you couldn't afford to buy something else. If anyone who owns or drives a 996 is ashamed of the car, then they chose the wrong car or they bought it for the wrong reasons. Nothing that the rest of us say will change that.
Wow, Jumpers C4S looks good from any angle.
You peeps have scared poor Hurdi out of posting in his own thread. I hope your
ashamed
of your selves. Hah get it?
Not so... Mine was up well before they brought theres out. BTW I took mine off after I ran off the road into a barrier in the snow. The car hit the barrier **** end first. Maybe all my added letttering made the car tooooo **** heavy . It now says Carrera 911... thats all lol. Maybe I should change the 911 to 996.
BTW I am not ashamed to own a 996. The operative phrase being 996.. NOT 911.. People try to hide the fact that the 996 is not actually a 996 by altering or hiding the lovely shaped headlights. Making them round. Or even adding airfoils and removing the automatic one which came on the 996. Removing the pumpkins. Adding different bumpers and skirts to the original 996 ones. Maybe some people like to fake people into thinking that they spent a lot more money on the PORSCHE they have by altering them to make them look like a 997.
BTW thanks to all the posters for the photos of your gorgeous Porsche 966 models. I will save them all to my screen saver. I have about 2000 photos in the screen saver. I can't get enough of the 996 model. I love them.
I've wanted a Porsche since I saw LeMans in the theater! When the Boxster came out I thought that is what I might eventually get because I think it harkens back to the 356 ( I also like 914s) When I finally decided to pull the trigger I decided to look at 911s also. While I can't say I love the headlights I decided it wasn't worth the money to stress over them. I also have an 2002 Mini Cooper S which I will not replace with one of the newer cars because they made them part of the hood. I've only had mine a week but every time I go in the garage I like it more.
All the fuss over the lights is like a beautiful girl stressing over a blemish that nobody else sees.
Even if I say so myself, it takes a certain amount of intelligence to create a thread which gets 59 reply's within 24 hours. YES I feel like a 12 year old girl, but where can I find one of those at this time of night hahahahaha.
I love mine! I drove it around bone stock and just loved it. 99.9% of the public think its a $100K car
I had no intention of changing anything until I started to work on it, which I love. But for spring its getting an aero kit and 19" wheels. I'll probably regret the difference in ride, but its gonna be one badass bitch.
For the low price I got it at, it seems crazy not to make it even more outrageous
And if I want to sell it, someone will most likely come along with enough cash that I can buy two!
I'm ashamed of my horrifc handwriting...that's about it.
...oh, and the way I broke up with an International Projects Manager at Boeing 10 years ago. That girl was hot, and smart...and
really
hot.
My 1st goal in searching a used model was finding one that was completely original. Each model change should and can stand on its own IMO. A friend (who owns a mini) said "yeah but when I see your car coming from behind it looks like a boxster".....didn't justify a response. If I want it to look like a 997 I'll buy one.
A friend (who owns a mini) said "yeah but when I see your car coming from behind it looks like a boxster".
Your "friend" is clearly an idiot. Beside the fact that he feels the need to belittle your car (and I'm sure there are many more reasons)
#1 - As Jay G posted - The rear end of the 996 & 986 look nothing alike
#2 - He owns/drives a mini...
Need I say more?
Jay G,
You must be "dubbly" ashamed - 2 "fake" Porsches in your driveway...Jeeezzzzzzzz
My biggest problem is to decide the one to drive that will embarrass me less that day
Of course, it is also hard to take the big grin off my face every time I get in one of them
I think the "friend" meant when he sees the cars coming from behind - as in the rear-view mirror.
That said, I've owned both cars with the same front end - 986 and 996 - and I don't really give half a poo what anyone thinks. Both cars are beautiful...
oops, re-read the post. A little harder to tell them apart from the front. If you can see the side a bit, easier with Boxster side vents
Yup they both are beautiful, especially the headlights
There is no shame. There is no impressing.
I bought the car as a tool, not for status.
If anyone doesn't like it that's their problem.
Trust me, I can take the heat - Last year I raced a car with a rotary. The jokes get old real fast, but I don't really mind. I have my trophies to rub in the face of the haters.
I love my 996 and I modified my headlights because, well, I modify almost every headlight on every car that I've owned. I don't do it for anyone but me and not because they're ugly, but just because I like to be a little different than all the other 996's out there or whatever other car I drive where I've modified the headlights. I'll upgrade the tailights at some point too because I just happen to like the look of the LED tails, not because they look more like a 997.
^^^^
That just tells me you guys age OLD!!! Who handwrites anything these days, its all either typed, texted or emailed.
I really love my 996 and those who dont read 5chn3ll's sig.
Unbelievable...wow what a thread lollllll
You see... some enjoys modifying their pcar - a lot. Like it or not, get over it. It's a hobby, a passion, something fun to do for many of us. Not sure what part of that you didn't get! Not everyone is living their life aiming the top social rankings, just hoping that some day one (or more) will think that you are a hell of a fortunate superhero - but perhaps just a tad less than the other superhero owning a spanking new 997 LOL
I take the public transport bus to go to the office, back and forth. And I own two cars, and one bicycle (although a GIANT brand/make... shameful you think?!?!).
Modifying a Porsche car imo is worthwhile (no offence to our purists). Somehow it is not as satisfying as when I modify my VW Passat for instance. You see where I am getting with that....
So happy to own a (red) Porsche Boxster you have no idea... and NOT ashamed at all to wear its badges nor I am ashamed to admit that I find great satisfaction in modifying it during sunny weekends - headlights included. In fact, I think it looks so much better than your cartoon blue car lol
(why you don't have a real pic of your car as your avatar, like everyone else in this thread, you ashamed mate?)
Following ownership of a '80 911 SC, a '96 993 w/Tip, and a '97 993 6 speed, I bought a '99 996 Cabrio w/hardtop + 6 speed. My only regrets were selling the SC and buying a Tip.
I consider my current 996 cab to be superior to my 993s in some respects and inferior in none. No excuses required.
relinuca
I will echo what others have said already: What the hell is the point of this thread?
If you are actively on this forum then you are an enthusiast. If you are an enthusiast yet you don't like your car then things are really f-d up.
So happy to own a (red) Porsche Boxster you have no idea... and NOT ashamed at all to wear its badges nor I am ashamed to admit that I find great satisfaction in modifying it during sunny weekends - headlights included. In fact, I think it looks so much better than your cartoon blue car lol
just the right amount of touch, 99. That ain't your sister's Boxter.
(the only thing worth comment in this entire thread)
Ashamed
Are you kidding
I love my car and the changes or upgrades that I make is to give my car some individuality. Some nice wheels and tires, maybe a wing, a little tint and maybe give it a little "Badd ***" sound with an Xpipe and Fister. Not trying to make it something it isn't, just a reflection of my personal tastes
This is a dumb thread

This is my 99 996 C2 Cab... Honestly.
Fix that UV blocker and the cartoon thingy lol Other than that, nice car man
and please upgrade those old tech headlights with a 'modern' bi-xenon system - thank you very much
(so mean lolll, sorry for intruding your thread btw!)
EDIT: there, fixed. less mean. Respect Car Customization loll
That's very expensive to do (real OEM not cheap knockoff conversion). Unfortunately the plain (base) MKI front is pretty damn ugly compared to the MKII Bi-Xenon/Litronic.
Actually the upgrade can be done to bi-xenon projectors for around $650
While the MKII headlights look nicer, there is nothing wrong with the MK1's
What's a matter, you afraid someone might think you have a Boxster?
Oh yea, very very expansive! And at that price you get nice frosty lenses, 15+ years old bowl-shaped tech optics, and something far from being even half bi-xenon lol
I went for something a tad more stylish, robust, crystal clear lenses, a safety cutoff with brutal optical performance... bundle with, of course, bi-xenon features. Something more of today's time
Crazy optics... check it out. Recently kick-started on Facebook... Likes wanted.... many many many please
https://www.facebook.com/GTProjectors
Anyone who thinks that this is a "cheap knockoff" and does not think it looks better (and more modern) than anything Porsche put out until the new 991 lights is krazy.
Thanks Dg, Geetee
You should see the model below, a whole new level and style
If some ask, I CNC those as a hobby... for my car, for you guys, for our little pcar guys community. Semi-profitable yea but believe me I am not trying to get rich or make a living out of this (keeping the day job lol). Just fortunate to own adv manufacturing tooling and all... and they're good fun to make
Apologies for my puss & emotional reply earlier in this thread. Those outperforms the Litmotritz $2k headlights performance-wise so you can imagine how attached I am to 'headlight' mods LOLLL... I know, sad
Respect Car Modz - Go Go Shameless lollll
I'm off/done, sorry for the thread hijack
I had budgeted for a 996, a 2004 was to be my ride I had decided. S or 4S. I love all 911's and would have loved my 996. I had it all figured out. It'd be "OEM-Plus" with 19's and a slight drop. Then I found a 997 C2S. You'd be surprised how 997.1 owners are made to feel on the 997 forum occasionally, especially with Tip.
I love my 997, but I also love your 996. Ashamed? Pff! Talk about a first-world delima.
Now if I could just afford that black 993 Turbo...
Sorry bruh, forgot your a lawyer. Ill make it easy.
"light" years ahead of an MKI. Get it? "light".
And, I was just joking. I know several lawyers some of whom I really enjoy in court.
Oh and ,,, C4S is an MKII not a 996.1,,,,,,,,,,,
As I sit here with a freshly blown engine, I can't help but feel a bit bittersweet on the 996.
I love the styling, the drive and the value of the 996s. It baffles me that someone would be ashamed of owning one or look down on those that do. For gods sake, it's a 911!
But I don't think you can look at a car without factoring in some of the inherent issues that seem to plague the engine. If I could go back 13 months, I would probably go a different direction, despite the great value. I've lost >$15k in value in one year. That's a tough pill to swallow.
996 has indeed been a black eye on the 911.
But I would never turn down or look away from a 996GT3.
It is a shame really when you see 1999-2000 996 carreras sitting around in uncared condition or selling for 15k....
