I just checked my ODBII dongle again, and found some new codes:
Leading evidence: 'Check odbii dongle again, and found some new codes' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'solenoid and not something else' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check odbii dongle again, and found some new codes' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just an update on the final repair: ECU doctors repaired the ECU, and Fischer Motors replaced the solenoid, along with tensioner pads on BOTH sides of the engine.

I had the same issue and the solenoid had to be replaced.

Once they replaced the tensioner pads on one side, it made my cam deviation worse until they did the pads on the other side.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

It took the mechanic about $1k of diagnostics to determine it was the solenoid and not something else, so it could have been $2k if they did replaced it based on the code.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My engine started to idle rough, like it was running on 5 cylinders, but only at idle or below 1,000 RPM. Seems to run well under load when driving. The next day, I had to drive for a work event and the check engine light came on. Using an OBDII Bluetooth reader, I get 1 confirmed code and 5 others pending:
Confirmed: P1530 (Camshaft Adjustment Bank 1)
Pending: P1319 (General misfire)
Pending: P1318 (cylinder 6)
Pending: P1317 (cylinder 5)
Pending: P1316 (cylinder 4)
Pending: P1315 (cylinder 3)
Pending: P1314 (cylinder 2)
Pending: P1313 (cylinder 1)
The day it was running rough, there was salt all over my car (sorry, its a daily driver, in the snow).
Today, after driving it through lots of slush, its running normal again at idle.
I don't want to go replacing parts, but everything on the car is pretty much original, including plugs, coils, wires, AOS. I suspect I should do plugs and coils anyway.
When I pull the oil filler cap off at idle, its not hard to pull off and the engine runs at a high idle, and you can hear a vacuum (air). Replacing the cap lower the idle. Still running fine either way.
P1530 Camshaft adjustment, bank 1

Could be just a stuck solenoid on Bank 1
From the link the solution is to clear codes and drive it hard and often. See if it comes back.
If it does, then need to check wiring to Bank 1 Variocam Solenoid.
That DBJoe,
Just to confirm, bank 1 is on the drivers side (for US-based left-hand-drive cars, for the 996, where cylinder 1 is closest to the rear of the car (closest to the accessories driven by the serpentine belt), correct?
I just checked my ODBII dongle again, and found some new codes:
Pending: P1315 (new)
Pending: P1313 (new)
Looks like both banks are affected? So now Im thinking Mass Airflow Sensor or some other non-bank-specific sensor?
I had the same issue and the solenoid had to be replaced. Porsche manual says pull the engine for the work. My Indy was able to do it without pulling the engine so it saved a lot of money. Not to scare you but could possibly be looking at $2-3K. Hope it resolves magically.
I would start with the plugs and coils. As I mentioned, I have all the tools for this.....I could potentially help you next weekend, but can't make any promises. When I did mine, I pulled the rear bumper, then pulled the exhaust and did it. Took me about 4 hours if I recall. I was looking for the post....but couldn't find it easily. If we do this ourselves, I would look at your exhaust and the clamps and see how corroded everything is.....mine was not at all and it all came off very easily.
Thanks Paul. I have virtually no corrosion on the exhaust and it all came off easily when I did the Gundo hack...
Ill order plugs and coils. Ive heard the rear wheels off is all we need to make the job easier. My mechanic said I could use his heated shop that has a lift, too.
For me, the was the solenoid. It was $3k to fix. It took the mechanic about $1k of diagnostics to determine it was the solenoid and not something else, so it could have been $2k if they did replaced it based on the code.
Car has been running excellent ever since.
What are you going to do with the ECU? Repair it or replace it? I would think if you could find the burnt component, you could replace it, or probably better to send it to somebody who does this for a living.
Fischer Motors is where the car is at now. Once they replace the other failed solenoid (the first one failed 4 months ago), theyll send this ECU to ECU doctors to have it repaired.
Just an update on the final repair: ECU doctors repaired the ECU, and Fischer Motors replaced the solenoid, along with tensioner pads on BOTH sides of the engine. My cam deviation numbers before this work was (-3, -1) and now my numbers are (0, 0). One thing the mechanic said is that if the cam deviation is -6, -6, there's still the problem of the cams being out of time with respect to the crank, which is a problem, even though the cams are identical. So it's not just -6 delta between the two numbers, there's also an absolute number that's important. Once they replaced the tensioner pads on one side, it made my cam deviation worse until they did the pads on the other side. One last thing: I had the mechanic pull the sump plate to inspect and bore scope a couple of cylinders (numbers 3 and 6), since the cam covers were already out and it would have been quite easy to pull a spark plug. So here's a couple of photos on the tensioner pads and bore scope (the pics are pretty bad), but the good news is that he didn't see any scoring, only normal scratch marks on an engine with 64k miles.
Tensioner pads arranged in the order they appear from the rear of the car. Note that bank 1 tensioner pressure-side sits on the bottom, where bank 2 sits on top (and is easier to replace).
They are worn!
Cylinder 3. Horrible picture, but the mechanic said these scratches are typical for a car with 64k miles.
Cylinder 6. Horrible picture, but the mechanic said these scratches are typical for a car with 64k miles.
