Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Since then my water pump has been replaced, otherwise it has been completely reliable for a not-quite daily driver.
Leading evidence: 'Replace since' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace do oil analysis' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Unfortunately I’m not imaginative enough to have reset the trip ODO at 77,000 to get the really cool pics...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I’m about 600 miles away from 77,777 as well. Based on the weather it may be a month or two before I hit that number unfortunately. Unfortunately I’m not imaginative enough to have reset the trip ODO at 77,000 to get the really cool pics...

Me neither.
I saw it at 77277 about two weeks ago and went, "hey, I'm just 500 miles away."
I've probably put less than 100 miles on it since.
My normal 52 mile daily commute is stopped for now, so I won't hit it soon.
I decided that if I was going to be laid off, and my vacation days don't rollover, I'm taking them all now.
So I'm off ALL of December.
But I'll be back commuting in January...for a while.
Awesome
Isn't it coincidental that many of our 996s are reaching the same milestone.
6 years ago, when I was shopping for one, 40,000 -45,000 miles was the sweet spot for use.
More than enough not to be garage queen (with all the known problems that go with that) and not too many, that thousands of dollars of wearable items would need immediate attention.
What would be the sweet spot for someone now to be looking for on a 996?
Our cars are now notching 20 years on 996.1s.
Any thoughts........
In my case I bought it with about 70,000 miles in 2018, and it needed a clutch. So I did the IMS and RMS at the same time. Since then my water pump has been replaced, otherwise it has been completely reliable for a not-quite daily driver. My guess is I probably bottomed out on purchase price by getting one that had not had the IMS done, and that needed a little bit of mechanical work. Prices, at least on BAT, seem to be going up for really nice 996 cars with low miles, but once the miles are into the 70k range or higher they seem to still be under $20k for a base C2. Would be happy if the value of mine goes up, but that would be a first for me with a car!

I think you are pretty close, 70,000 to 80,000 mile range might now be the sweet spot for a purchasing a car, providing a documented history.
Too bad one of us wasn't smart enough to start a thread that could have a data collection of completed maintenance and repetitive maintenance.
Things like IMS, coolant tank, coil packs. Or even common modifications like X51 oil baffle, oil filter conversion, headers, cats, underdrive pulleys, or throttle bodies.
Then frequency of oil changes, do oil Analysis?
Some of us seem to have figured out how to enjoy these cars and have them be reliable at 15-20 year old sports cars.
So what would we have incommon?
I think the results would be enlightening and to a newbie coming in to the 996 world, it could be very helpful.
There is more to these cars, than bore scoring , AOS failure, intermix or our cross to bare, the IMS bearing.
These cars are affordable fun cars for regular people.
