I've used Vasoline on sunroof seals in the past,, does not take much just enough to see a slight sheen.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, with the cold weather coming on, my Targa top has been creaking a lot. Is there any type of adjustment, or is this just how these tops are? I don't drive it in snow or bad weather, but the cold days I do drive, the top is sure a lot noisier. I guess I could just crank up the heated seats and heater and leave the top open. Kyle

POST 2Original post

German rubber,, often has high natural latex content its natures Polyurethane,, it typically needs a mild natural rubber conditioner to prevent squeaking avoid silicone products, bees wax blends work pretty good... I've used Vasoline on sunroof seals in the past,, does not take much just enough to see a slight sheen. And if you start using a petroleum product it needs generally regular cleaning and re-treatment.

This, or gpl105, both will work, both are inert.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the tip. Doing some research on Krytox. It doesn't look like there is a decent alternative and I can't seem to find this locally. I'll be ordering some from Amazon. Kyle

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I treated all of the rubber areas with Krytox GPL205. It took away the creaking. Now I am left with a little squeaking. I had it out in the sun last weekend, and with the warmer temps the creaking and squeaking went away. I may do another treatment to see if the squeaking goes away. Thanks for the tip and advice.

POST 8Original post

I use Gummi Pflege on my cabrio - both the soft top and especially the hard top. Works well, but need to pull the hard top and re-treat the rubber as it is getting a little squeaky again. Just drove our GTI to New York and back this week and the sunroof was squeaky as hell - will try Gummi Pflege on that and see if it helps. Daryll

How much did it take? Krytox is pretty dang expensive. I used Sailkote and OneDrop (as suggested in other threads online) and it didn't do squat for my rattles.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16345869

I would put a dab on my finger and rub it into the rubber seal. Probably only used 15% of the content in the tube. Just under $20 delivered. I'll see how another treatment does. You can hardly tell I had done the first treatment. Maybe the rubber absorbed it more than I would have suspected.

The rubber seal at the front? Is this what you bought? https://www.amazon.com/Krytox-Grease-Pure-PFPE-PTFE/dp/B00MWLDALQ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=krytox&qid=1578854990&sr=8-4 https://www.amazon.com/Krytox-Grease-Pure-PFPE-PTFE/dp/B00MWLDALQ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=krytox&qid=1578854990&sr=8-4

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16348378

Yes, that is what I had purchased. The rubber that is attached to the front and rear glass top is where I applied the krytox. I also hit other rubber areas around the top as well.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16348483

You shouldn't need a second application unless the surface wasn't fully pre cleaned. I might look to places you didn't already apply instead (windows?)

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 16349690

This is good to know. How do you suggest to pre clean it? I have some 303 Aerospace but if I used that to clean it would it prevent the Krytox from doing its job?

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 16350241

I just use lightly soapy water and then wait for it to dry. It's little bits of embedded dirt that make it less effective. My wife's old BMW convertible squeaked like crazy, and I learned all this from a TSB they had put together. If there are any seals that are not rubber but like a fabric, BMW has a liquid for that too, I'm sure someone makes it for them but I've never found it anywhere else. The other thing is said for frameless windows was to put aquapel on the part of the glass that goes into the roof.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16350246

What's the BMW liquid called? Maybe it would be useful to apply to the wind deflector since the back side of it has a fabric feel to it (?).
