Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just bought this 996 and it came with a replacement X51 motor. While it has great power, I keep hearing about a "TUNE" that would really boost the horse power. Can someone explain to me what a "tune" is and what it does and how to get one? I am pretty new to the Porsche world. I have an 03 Boxster and now the 996 911. I am just curious about a "tune" that would boost the car(s) HP. Thank you for any information or direction to information that would explain and help me. I appreciate any help at all. I just love HP! Paul

POST 2Original post

Im not sure what an x51 package would add in terms of tuning ability that any regular 996 would be able to take advantage of. Which is to say, probably not much. A tune starts with an ECU reprogram, and on a regular 996, is probably only 5-15HP by itself. Tunes are often much better value on newer, turbocharged engines, where increased boost is possibly just by not limiting boost by the computer.

POST 3Original post

I dont believe you will seem much gains either. It just wasnt an engine that had much potential as far as power increases are concerned. Definitely not a Honda J-Series or K-Series type engine. In fact, I believe a well-known Porsche engine builder doesnt see much gains from the X51 powerkit vs standard engine rebuilds. If you can verify this, that will give you an idea of if a tune is worth it. If you can, have your car dyno'd. It would be interesting to see what it puts down.

POST 4Original post

You car, if it has the X51 package, already has quite a few improvements: X51 Power Kit (from the tech bulletin describing installation) "A parts set -"Carrera Powerkit"- is available to retrofit the standard engine with an increased performance of 254 kW (345 HP). The following parts in the engine are replaced, exchanged or modified to achieve this increased performance: - new intake manifold with modified cross-section (material: sand cast aluminum ); - new intake pipe supports adapted to the form of the intake manifold; - new exhaust manifolds with larger cross-section and optimized flow behavior; - new cylinder heads with optimized, CNC-milled inlet ducts; - new camshafts with larger valve stroke on the inlet side and modified inlet and outlet timing; - inlet valve springs adapted to the enlarged valve stroke; - modified partition box in the oil pan; - modified maps for the DME control module.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks very much for all your information. I am much more educated now! Although if its not a Turbo, I dont know what it would do for any other engine to boost HP. I will enjoy her as she is, without apology either. She is quite quick. Thanks again everyone. I remain, Respectfully, Paul

Some cars aren't very well sorted from the factory. This is why with some cars, even NA, a tune can help. This is also why is some cars you can just change one side of the equation (say just the intake manifold) for a big power gain, but in these to gain power you have to modify the entire air loop.

I've heard good things about Softronic tunes. See performance gains for the X51 in this chart

POST 8Original post

Only purchase a tune that can be completed for your vehicle, with live data. I see "mail order" tunes all the time that drive business to us. They increase enrichment, wash down cylinders, and help start bore scoring. They also turn up rev limiters, and kill lifters.. Increasing ignition timing may appear to help, but it really doesn't. Nothing beats taking live data from your car, with your fuel system, and your engine, then creating MAPS the engine actually wants. The engine has to tell you what it wants. The engine is in charge. Lots of local tuners have the capability to do this. It doesn't have to be a Porsche specific facility. Just make sure that aren't just concerned with a huge peak output number, and they work to increase the average power of the engine across the board, with a focus on torque, not HP. HP is, and always will be a derivative of TQ. That said, the OEM X51 file can be uploaded with the factory PIWIS, or an Autlogic. That tune may be all that you need.
