Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My son wanted to drive the car, and made an adjustment to the steering wheel. Either as a result, or a coincidence, the idiot light on the dashboard lit up as an airbag fault. My plan would be to remove the wheel and make sure the connection is tight between airbag and harness, but what else should I try as well? Also, dis-connect battery is the right move, right? Should I try something simpler before getting to the wheel?

POST 2Original post

Battery disco generally will not reset the airbag light. At least it wont when its the seat belt harness fault. U may just be able to get a shop with a good snap on scanner to clear it 4 u and it may not come back.

POST 3Original post

Correct on the battery disconnect. The code is stored in the ECU and will not be reset by a battery disconnect. It would be best to use Durametric or have a dealer read the code that tripped the airbag light so that you know exactly what is wrong. Durametric tells you the specific problem, whether it is the steering wheel airbag or a seat belt buckle. Then you can tackle the specific problem. Otherwise you will be chasing ghosts.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 16339373

Lots of people have made this mistake especially ones that put sport seats or aftermarket racing steering wheels. You created an open circuit which the ECU recognizes as a SRS fault. You'll have to reset it using a scanner like the Durametric. Many cheaper scanners from Autel and Foxwell will do the job too.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Steering wheel is OEM, but the seat is from a different car and was swapped 6 months ago. Looks like taking it to the shop is the best plan.

POST 6Original post

I would check the seat harness. Moving the seat may have disconnected a poor connection on the replacement seat.

POST 7Original post

Recent experience - wife in passenger seat, buckles up and the airbag light comes on. Reset it with my Durametric software (btw it told me it was the passenger seat belt buckle). Happens again. Reset again and I shot some WD-40 into the seat belt buckle and it has not happened again.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 16339602

^THIS! ^ Usually the seat belt buckle switch develops a poor connection at trips the Air Bag light. Resetting it with the proper scanner can fix it for a while.

POST 9Original post

I used to get the seat buckle airbag light fault occasionally. Cleared with a durametric but would reappear occasionally. I shot some electrical contact cleaner spray into the buckle receptacle, cleared the fault with the Durametric, and haven't had a problem again in like 6 or 7 years.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

WD40 in both seat belt sockets, pressed the multi-connects to both seats, no change. I haven't gone to get the ECU re-flashed and codes cleared, so that's next.

POST 15Original post

Yes. You have to clear the air bag code. It won't go away on its own. Then see if it comes back.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16355171

You don't reflash the ECU. You reset the Airbag module.

POST 17Original post

Almost certainly the seatbelt buckle and ultimately you will have to change it. Cleaning with WD40 rarely works as a lasting solution. It was a factory defect and there was a TSB bulletin for this a long time ago. Porsche recommended changing the buckles and sometimes the harness as well. Eventually had to change mine many years ago and no recurrence since.

POST 18Original post
