Suggestion

From day to day use I rely on the dash gauge before cold start, taking into account that car needs to be good leveled.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I learned on this thread recently that one can see the oil level on the dash by simply rolling the key forward to the point just before starter crank. Previously I thought one only saw that oil level indication upon a fuel fill. Happy to find out about this. What I've recently noticed, however, is that the countdown timer on my '99 996 seems to start at a random point each time. Yesterday it started with 6+ minutes on the countdown timer. This morning it started just under 30 seconds. Is this randomness known/expected, or do I have some strange ghosts in my machine?

POST 2Original post

normal, it's based on time since last shutdown vs engine temp...figures out correct drain down time to get a correct level

POST 4Original post

Usually I run the oil level check the first time I start the car in the morning - it reads fast. After that I don’t check again until the next day. At least on my car the oil level indicator has been pretty close to the dipstick, so call me impressed with the system for the age of the car. Daryll

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am also seeing tight agreement between dash and stick.

POST 6Original post

Also pretty good match of readings from stick and dash, irrespective when measured; stone cold or hot, quick after shutdown or some longer interval ... From day to day use I rely on the dash gauge before cold start, taking into account that car needs to be good leveled. Every now and then after doing the dash check I do the correct quality control and verify what the stick reads.

and I'll add, that's for the wet sump/m96/m97 cars... for dry sump GT2/GT3/Turbo 996/997 you measure while fully up to temp with engine running. after sitting over night, typically is only a few seconds to update/check, worth doing before start up
