POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What a combination. Anyone else agree? Proud owner of a PAM 86(aka "the 1000m")will look nice next to the c4 cab.

POST 3Original post

I think IWC goes pretty well too - a nice, big-faced black Portuguese next to a triple-black cab is a great combo...

POST 4Original post

Hi to everybody. New in the forum. Have a 03 C2 Cab.and I also love watches. I personally prefer my Girard Perregaux Sea Hawk II...but Panerai is also great.

POST 6Original post

Hi - I'm also a porsche enthusiast that loves watches - and in my mind, there's only one serious watch for a porsche owner - and it HAS to be german. I love wearing my Lange 1 Moonphase Platinum (from Lange and Sohne) while driving my C4 Cab... a great combination! You can see a pic of the Lange 1 Moonphase here: <a href="http://www.langesoehne.de/en/02_watches/index_lange1_mondphase.php" target="_blank">http://www.langesoehne.de/en/02_watches/index_lange1_mondphase.php</a> Porsche and Lange - the ultimate combination! POST 7Original post

I'll bite. Stainless Submariner with date--as classic as it gets! Rolex isn't even close to the best but race-winning Porsche drivers have graced their arms with Rolex Daytonas for so long... Patek, Audemars and Vacheron would top my list.

POST 8Original post

Oh oh: this has the recipe for a Swiss vs German (and don't forget the Italian Panerai) watch making feud! I'll admit I also wear a Submariner in my C4 occassionally and you've got a good point wrt Rolex Daytonas...

POST 9Original post

What great choices...here are my two watches: Casual: IWC Fliegerchrono in automatic w/bracelet. Dressy: Blancpain 2100

POST 10Original post

The submariner is a great watch but a Porsche is not a U-Boat. It's the Rolex Daytona all the way!

POST 11Original post

I'll bite too, I have an original Heuer wrist chrongraph I bought new in 1968! Still going strong too! Did you know that F.A. Porsche owns Eterna watch company? Eterna is one of the few who make the caliber and the watch today. Others who make their own caliber are Rolex (I have a GMT Master II), Minerva (my Pythagore is a favorite of mine), Glaschutte, IWC and a few others that someone else has to think of. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

POST 12Original post

Well, just to add fuel, if you're looking at the Rolex Daytona, you might as well add the Zenith El Primero to the list, because that's whose movement Rolex used for the Daytona. I also wouldn't completely overlook the Heuer Monaco -- cool looking and a strong racing connection.

POST 13Original post

I'm a fan of the Rolex Daytona's as well!!! Just has to be the stainless steel ones.

POST 14Original post

Lange 1 "Stealth" is a great choice, but an IWC Portugesier Chrono in white gold with the white dial may actually be the better choice. Panerai is more M3 than Porsche IMHO.

POST 15Original post

OTOH if you want to REALLY get into chrono's forget the ss Daytona (more Z350 than anything else) at 3K over rsp and go for great value with the Blancpain Flyback in any metal which is techically a much, much better watch than the Daytona. Or go big bucks and head for the Lange Datograph or Glashutte Original PanoRetroGraph.

POST 16Original post

Fine watches and cars go hand in hand. I have alwaysed been very interested in horology. I own a Rolex GMT and a chronoswiss opus. (those are the nicest) I want a Roger Dubois. One day (when i get my turbo )

POST 17Original post

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Dmitri: [QB]Well, just to add fuel, if you're looking at the Rolex Daytona, you might as well add the Zenith El Primero to the list, because that's whose movement Rolex used for the Daytona. Used to use the Z400 movement but no longer. All in house movement for the Daytona from about a year ago.

Panerai and Porsche all good : ). Have PAM 90 Power Reserve and PAM 87 1000m Submersible(Blue Face). Watches are great!! Regards. Mike

POST 22Original post

Breguet Aeronavale, Rolex President, Ebel Discovery/1911, Omega Constellation. Panerai is for driving an H1 or H2, I think. Odd that the Rolex Daytona came back, for years and years they couldn't give it away.

POST 23Original post

NMoore and LeChef...Just wondering why you percerptions about Panerai are what they are? Their your opinions but I'm just curious. I have a Rolex and sometimes feel a little self-conscious just because of the reaction I get when I tell someone "It's a Rolex". IMHO Rolex is often the watch most "M3 types", posers, whatever you want to call it aspire to. I bought it because the style really fit me. Sometimes when people ask me what it is I don't tell them (I don't like to be flashy). I was considering the Panerai for this very reason. So that it was NOT known by most people except those who truly know watches. I DO think they are a little large. I like a large watch but it doesn't slip underneath the cuffs of a dress shirt very well. The Rolex is beefy enough but doesn't intrude in this way.

POST 24Original post

The H1 and Luminor are both grotesquely large military devices intended for use civilian owners (generally) never put them to. The Panerai is intended to be worn outside neoprene, not inside French cuffs. The M3 is a pretty damned good car for the money, and I see them driven very fast quite often. Not quite the same thing.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Meant PAM 87...it started out as a simple question.....another fine watch is the Omega Seamaster Pro in titanium and tantalum with gold accents. I admire all of the watches that have been put forth. Reality is a winnie the pooh watch would look good in a porsche...

POST 26Original post

Rolex and Porsche go together like peanut butter and jelly. Eterna buy movements, btw, they are not a manufacture. Panerai is Italian in name only, and remember the proper early military Panerai used Rolex movements. The new ones really are just fashion watches, although very popular ones at that.

I rarely see them unless I am at a professional level race event. They are marked up quite a bit because Rolex does not export them to the United States. POST 28Original post

I got my dad a Porsche Design watch that ran about $2.5k a few years ago. It broke down completely. My mom got a Rolex for Christmas. It too broke rather quickly. POST 33Original post

...SS Daytona, black face (new movement). Goes nicely with my 996 C4 (Ocean blue/black)!! Also thinking of buying a Jaeger Le Coultre Master Moon or Master Reserve de Marche. Sorry, don't like the Panerais at all! Too big and chunky - look like they were designed for the partially sighted!!

POST 34Original post

I have to come clean: I'm a watch snob with an addiction problem, so if I ruffled a few feathers I apologise. The Panerai looks good, but uses bought in movements that cost about $1.50 meaning you pay a lot for the look. any Rolex is a well-made workhorse that's almost indestructable, with unfortunately a lot of baggage. If you like "blue blood" watches that match Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati etc. then look at Audemars Piguet, Blancpain, Breguet, IWC, JLC, Glashutte Original, Lange e Sohne, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin, but be prepared to pay, not only to buy but also to maintain. If you like watches check out Timezone.com or ThePurists.com both of which fan the flames of addiction.

POST 35Original post

Rolex makes a great watch, and I have one. But they are way too common . . . ever seen a car salesman without one?

POST 36Original post

Le Chef, just FYI I think you forgot Chopard and particularly Girard Perregaux who have their own movements and do do extremely fine work at the high end. Bregeut, Blancpain, Glashutte, and Frederick Piguet (movements) are all Swatch. The Blancpain and Breguet chronos use the same ETA works, service in the U.S. is not great. Apart from steel Rolexes, any of the finest watches can be had new for 35-45% off quite easily. ALL of them, and if you know anyone in the trade getting Rolexes for 5% above Swiss wholesale is doable too. Hint--jewelers get very maleable around Feb. 15 every year. Rolex sells just about 1M watches per year, Patek a little under 30K, and Patek outsells most all of the other "luxury" brands by some margin. Like Heineken or Montecristo, being common does not detract from the quality and durability of Rolex or Patek, they have managed their business better than the others. I have owned and/or witnessed enough brands/fashions in watches come and go to simply caution anyone to really check into the service as best you can (i.e. other than the salesman) before you buy. Especially when a brand is suddenly "hot." At various times I have seen Concord, Ebel, Cartier, and Breitling, for example, do their little mortar shots in the market behind a model or two and wind down (pun intended) by infuriating owners and merchants with slipshod service and too much inventory, and it will cost you when/if you trade. Which you should! No snobbery here (mild addiction), just like cars it empirically doesn't make sense what we actually buy versus what we need, so get what you like and don't worry about it.

POST 38Original post

It looks like Nick opened up yet another horizon for discussion. Once you've decided on which watch complements your 996, the next question might be what cigar completes the image (whether or not you choose to smoke it in the car). While a knee-jerk reaction might be some of the more popular Cuban cigars, my recent favorites include the Padron Anniversario series, Padron 1926 (if you can get them), and I just tried the Zino Platinum "Chubby" though I don't know that I'd make a regular habit out of smoking a $35 cigar.

Stainless Rolex Explorer II here. I've worn this watch literally every day for almost 25 years and it has never failed or varied in it's timekeeping. It's hard to imagine another watch being able to match it's endurance or subtle class. Just like a Porsche... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

POST 40Original post

Mr. Moore, not to nitpick, but not all the Breguet chronos use an ETA movement. My Classique uses a Lemania ebauche-same as the Patek chronograph, although they finish them differently. Classic column wheel chrono, not like the Piquet 1185 in some of the other watches you mentioned. BTW, I'm a watchmaker . . .

POST 41Original post

I don't want a Panerai, but I have nothing against them, and especially nothing against people who do like them. Just if there is a car they are symmetrical to, IMO it would be a Hummer or G-Wagen. Strikes me as more fashion than value, only time will tell on that. And believe me when I say I have seen a good bit of owner angst when hand-made watch or gun companies scale up quickly. It also happens one of my best friends for &gt;20 years is a very significant Rolex dealer, seen many other brands come and go in the other cases. To the extent I think much about which watch to wear, I think a lot more about where I am going, not which car I am driving there. If I had a "car watch" probably a big Casio, or a big Indiglo Timex. Big display, big buttons, backlit. Know something odd? Of our cars the most accurate clock is in the bloody Range Rover, the worst by far is the VW. You like sweeter wrappers, Dmitri, you should try Honduran also. I am not sure even my beloved Romeo y Julieta Churchills go with the car (beer either), good cigars (beers) are best when you are not distracted by anything important, and anyway the ashtray is way too little (no opener). Or in a cab the wind would just smoke it for you. Although in SoCal I gather the traffic can be so bad you are not doing anything important much of the time, and you wouldn't be getting much wind either! Enjoy!

POST 42Original post

Not at all Damian, quite right. I meant the Type XX, Aeronavale/Transatlantique flybacks. Great for cooking, I love being able to time two things at once, and both mechanisms can be reset so easily, no pawls in the bezel.

POST 43Original post

Wow I didn't realize there were so many watch freaks out there like me! Anyhow I have a Rolex Explorer II. My question is on "maintenance". What and how often should you get it serviced? I have heard you need to get it "oiled" etc. every so often. Is this true and if so how often? Someone also once told me if you don't have any problems not to crack the case. I'm confused. The watch is about 7 years old and I've had it since new. TIA

POST 44Original post

A mechanical watch needs servicing on average every 3-4 years. In many ways it's just like a car engine: the oil needs to be changed, and it's expensive oil designed to cope with small bearings and high temperatures. Bearings and other parts like waterproofing seals wear or perish. These are usually replaced when the watch is disassembled for cleaning. You may not notice the watch losing or gaining time, but the parts are wearing...

Cupcar -- To get the GMT to provide rough navigation: 1. Have your watch set up so that GMT, or Zulu time, is displayed with the pointer on the outer bezel set at the 12 o'clock position. 2. Point the local hour hand at the sun (clearly not a good plan around noon or at night). 3. With the local hour hand pointing at the sun, the 24 hour hand is pointing roughly at Magnetic North, obviously south is opposite, and you can figure East and West pretty accurately using numbers on the watch face. If you can imagine, I navigated a crippled U.S. Navy jet back to the carrier with a GMT.

LanceK -- Not sure how far you are from Manhattan, but a tour of the Rolex maintenace facilities there on Fifth Avenue is a great experience if you are a Rolex freak like we are all Porsche Freaks. If interested , let me know.

POST 47Original post

Does anyone know a good place in So. California to get Rolex's serviced? Thanks in advance!

POST 48Original post

Tell you what, I have a Timex. Keeps perfect time and I'm not sure anyone really notices as I scoot past!!! Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm in a strange mood this evening. I actually have a bunch of watches (including a Timex) but none are nearly as fancy as the ones mentioned unfortunately. Colin

Chris, Rolex has a recently added service center in Beverly Hills. I would look into whether it's cheaper to use the Dallas one due to sales tax, but I doubt it. The guy who runs Dallas service is quality, I knew him when he was watchmaker for my friends' stores. I know there are still qualified guys around, but Rolex no longer permits service by dealers at all. Too much trouble with inconsistent service and especially parts finding their way to counterfeiters in Asia--they freaked when the solid gold fakes started showing up, one reason it has become relatively difficult to switch dials in recent times. Shortshift, that is a truly excellent story. Which carrier?

POST 50Original post

okay, since there are so many watch connoisseurs here, I was thinking of buying a Tag Heuer Monza Chronograph because of its "racing heritage" and because it appeals to me. What are your opinions on this choice, and dont' hold back because I haven't spent the bucks yet!

POST 52Original post

Fluke996--Instead of their CARRERA model?! Heuer is a nice solid watch, rugged, decent value, about level with Omega. Should be available around $1500 or so new if you shop it, I think. No matter what it says on the case in terms of water resistance, don't push those chrono buttons under water.

POST 53Original post

Nick, Rolex does allow not only Rolex dealers, but qualified independent watchmakers to service their watches. (In order to be able to buy parts from Rolex they make sure you have the equipment, talent, and wherewithal to repair them.) Don't mistake me, this doesn't mean your independent watchmaker can do warranty repairs-just that there are watchmakers out there that Rolex will sell parts to.

POST 54Original post

Regarding maintenance, I would recommend using a auto winder for the nicer automatic timepieces. I wear an Omega daily and keep an IWC in a winder. Keeps the mechanism moving regularly, doesn't allow the oil inside to sit for extended periods of time without moving and keeps the watch wound properly. Btw, there was a very long post recently in the "Off Topic" section of the Board regarding watches. Quite interesting with some nice pics.

OT: How old are most of the people in this forum? wearing Blancpain, Lange 1 Moonphase, Bregeut, Blancpain, Glashutte, Frederick Piguet...etc?

POST 56Original post

I wear a Timex Expedition with Indiglo AND it has a built in Speedpass for Mobil gas! Best watch I ever owned! I keep my Rolex ExplorerII Tag Heur and Omega Seamaster up for sale...

POST 58Original post

So many watch lovers here I might as ask one of you guys. When I bought my set of Rolex for me and the wife, the store manager tells me that all rolex should be sent back to the factory for a "cleaning and conditioning"every 2-3 years. have any of you ever heard of that? Since my wife's watch contiou to run a couple of minutes slow every couple of weeks I am seriously thinking about forking out the couple of hundred bucks to have the Rolex factory look at it. Next, I love my Breitling Navitimer Olympus more then any Rolex I've seen. Peter Liao

Peter Look back a page on this post, the maintenance issue is discussed.

POST 62Original post

Where do I find an auto winder, preferably one that hold more than one watch?

POST 63Original post

<a href="http://www.orbita.net" target="_blank">http://www.orbita.net</a> Great winders that can be adjusted for the winding needs of each watch.

POST 64Original post

Pingu--Hard eight. I have had my Rolex about fourteen years, it was my favorite then, and still will be fourteen years from now. Needs service, maybe I will do the dial again. The Breguet is newest ('98 great time to buy) and I wear that one by far the most, the others in the middle. Getting the 5-year itch, this thread will probably cost me (wholesale). Time I got out of the Omega anyway, I never wear it. PeterC4Cab--That would be perfectionist, so is expecting accuracy better than a minute per week. 5 years, or if there is an obvious problem, or if it runs fast.

Any Minerva owners out there? I like my Minerva Pythagore. It has a crystal back so I can see the gears move (I'm a hopeless gearhead)and the jewels. The watches are totally built in house and the company has had only something like 350 employees since it started 135+ years ago. Limited production and I've only see one other since I got mine. They are in Villeret, Switzerland and used to make stopwatches for sports. <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />

I guess I'm either in left field or in a select club, but I'm surprised there has not been one mention of Corum. I've worn the same Corum Romvlvs since 1987 and it is as stylish now as it was I first got it. Looks good with a tux or a t-shirt.

POST 71Original post

Great topic, I'm a watch guy as well with Panerai, Omega, Vasheron, and Bedat. I was looking through the UK magazine "Car" last night and saw a very good looking new watch from Breitling. There are actually two new watches one of witch is the LeMans limited edition with only 1000 watches produced. It's part of a marketing campaign they are creating with Bently around the new Continental GT. You can check them out at <a href="http://www.breitling.com/index_en.html." target="_blank">http://www.breitling.com/index_en.html.</a> For those of you who enjoy cigars, if you get the chance try out a Gurkha Pre-Embargo cigars. They are made with vintage 1940 Cuban tobacco filler and really smooth. I bought mine at Corona Cigar Company in Orlando, FL. The web site is <a href="http://www.coronacigar.com/" target="_blank">http://www.coronacigar.com/</a> . Have fun! Jim

POST 75Original post

wow! how do you even dig up a 17 y/o thread?? love the submersible!

POST 76Original post

What's up with all the necro thread bumps lately? I love the style of Panerai watches, but I find them overpriced considering they just have an ETA movement (except the new ones, which now have an in-house movement). I'm an Omega guy myself.

POST 77Original post

Wow. Holy Thread Revival! I'll admit, I occasionally wear my Panerai 111 Luminor Marina while driving the Porsche...but only occasionally... Mike
