these are great cars, I loved the mid-engine feel of the Cayman's I test drove, but am much happier I went with a 996.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good Afternoon, I'm Lloyd and the proud new owner of a '99 with 78k miles. First, a huge thank you to all who post here. I sorted through hundreds of threads to help make a informed buy. I think I really lucked out: The car is super clean with full records, recent clutch, new tires and just about all the options I would have spec'd if I had bought her new. It's a factory Aero car which IMHO really sets off the 996 body. In the interest of keeping the valuation threads going, I got it for $17,500. From what else I've seen on the market, I think I got a pretty good deal, certainly fair. Based on board recommendations I took the car to Foreign Affairs in Pompano Beach for a PPI. Jared there did a very thorough job. He only found a few small issues (motor mounts, drop links) with no leakage (yet! =o). The owner, Bob Varela was also incredibly helpful. It was 100% money well spent. Unfortunately the IMS wasn't done with the clutch 6k miles ago so I'll be getting it done soon for peace of mind. I know the double row's appear to be more hardy, but since the next clutch job won't be for 50-60k miles, I don't think I can stomach 130k on a factory bearing. While this is my first 911, it's not my first P-car. I had an 87 944S that I loved many years ago. It had to move on after many loving miles when I got up into a snow-state and could only have one car. In the ensuing years, I've been mainly a BMW guy, with an E34 M5 and 1976 2002 worth mentioning. The 2002 is still with me and was a daily driver when I lived out in California. Now that I'm in Miami, I decided to move up to something a little more crash rated and "comfortable." The 02 is getting a tear down, paint and engine build. After that she'll be a weekend toy. The 911 is getting pressed into DD service, so we'll see how that works. I've only driven it for the weekend thus far, but I couldn't be happier. I look forward to participating in the discussions and hopefully participating in some get togethers/cars & coffee etc. Cheers! -Lloyd

That's the deal of the century. You really dropped on your feet with that car at THAT price. Well done. First mod should be is a radar detector on board.

POST 3Original post

Great deal. Higher mileage cars tend not to blow up the IMSB, from all I've read here and all other sources. Will you be found any HPDE with it? 2002 Turbo - Basalt Black Metallic / 2003 Carrera 4S - Speed Yellow / 1955 356 Continental 1500 - Rust Red

POST 4Original post

Seems like a really good deal, 3 weeks ago I flew to Philly and drove back to Metro Detroit/Ann Arbor with my 99' Aero car, seems like just yesterday. Anyways I paid under a tick under 19k and she had 71k on it, almost at 74k now these are great cars, I loved the mid-engine feel of the Cayman's I test drove, but am much happier I went with a 996. On a side note the savings in gas from the Cayenne Turbo I used to daily is AMAZING! I never complained about gas or mpg, but I am so happy I can now take the "long route" and barely see the gas gauge not drop by a quarter of a tank lol. Hooned this past week (over 4k rpm's for nearly every drive where I could have fun) along with a few, double the speed limit runs on back country roads and still 22mpg!!!! Not that I"m condoning speeding.

POST 6Original post

Excellent car, and as others have said, a fantastic deal! Congrats!!! Curious, where did you find the car? (ex: eBay, Craigs List, local dealer, etc.)

POST 7Original post

Very nice ! Don't forget to post up in the aero thread as well. What type of wheels are those?

POST 9Original post

Screaming deal...wow. You have great taste in cars. Your 996 looks fantastic...not sure by my iPhone but those look like Champion Mono-lites.

Thanks for the great welcome! I definitely think I lucked out on her! It has a dealer installed K40. Basically just makes a lot of noise ;-) Hopefully this summer I can find an intro course around here. I'd like to safely learn how to handle her, particularly quick emergency maneuvers around here! It was an ebay car/local dealer. However, the seller personally knew the long term owner, so it was helpful in getting all the records. They do look like Mono-lites, but I can't find any clear "forged" markings on them. My guess is they are knock-offs. They definitely look the part though. I'll be taking them off in the next day or two to see if I can find any markings. Ordered =o)

POST 12Original post

congrats and welcome. any plans to add the rear "winglets" to make your car a "full aero?"

POST 16Original post

Sweet looking ride, I like the wheels. With a recent clutch and seats showing zero cracks or abrasion wear common to older cars I'd say you kicked some major butt on the acquisition, enjoy it.

POST 17Original post

Nice find and great price on your MY 99 aero. Welcome to Rennlist.

Affirm! Stationed here in Miami. To be honest I didn't even know they existed until you mentioned it. Off topic for the rest of ya but,I was stationed in Miami 89-91 when the Dauntless was homeported there. Spent the rest of my career at Station Lake Worth Inlet. BM1. Semper Paratus!!!

Great buy on that car, seriously good deal. Looks like they upgraded the e-brake handle and gearshift ****/boot also. Have the same ones on my car - really dresses up the interior, but not cheap to do. It's a shame to have to spend the $$ on swapping out an IMS bearing that has a very small chance of failing at this point - maybe consider monitoring it instead. You might need to drop the tranny or engine for something other than a clutch in the meantime and you could swap it out then.

Beautiful car!!!...and may I say well done sir...and welcome to the Porsche community. We 996ers are kind of the bastard children of the 911 realm, but that just fuels the fire. These cars are amazing...truly. I know you will be happy with your decision. Best regards, -Josh

POST 25Original post

Great buy with the options and miles. I just paid 17k for mine (99' non aero, minimal options) with 67k on the clock. Very nice and welcome!

POST 27Original post

Congratulations and welcome Glad to hear everything worked out. You certainly got a stunning example. Enjoy!

POST 28Original post

1) Nice car. I may have an affinity toward a '99 with aero, though... 2) Thank God the IMS retrofit is now just a fact of life instead of hysteria. "Bummer, it wasn't done with the clutch like it should have been..." 3) Nice car. There's something about a kitted '99...

POST 30Original post

love the 996 Mk1 Aero and I love the color, but I may be a little biased :
