Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I think it was 6 months later that I changed jobs and went down to a 20ish minute commute...
Leading evidence: 'Replace jobs and went down' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'most balanced car i've driven and incredibly nimble' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace 996.2 six-speed' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

On a whim, I test drove a
very
lightly used 2012 Cayman R with PDK today...
Wow. I feel like a traitor for saying this, but the sport and sport-plus PDK setup in the R was awesome. I would have zero problem giving up a six speed for a well programmed PDK.
The 330 HP felt great as well... Not wanting for power.
I also took out a 2014 non-S cayman six speed. Yawn. It felt like there was a 'valet mode' switch set or something, no power.
I think I'll be on the lookout for a 987C.2 PDK to replace my 996.2 six-speed... I don't really want to spend the extra on the R version, so if anybody knows of a nice 2009 Cayman S PDK, let me know.
Yes, I realize there is a Cayman forum, but this is written from the perspective of a 996 owner!
I test drove a base (like 0 options base) late 986 Cayman years back that my dealer was trying to sell me dirt cheap ($35k if I remember correctly) and was shockingly impressed by how that mid engine handles. Probably the most balanced car I've driven and incredibly nimble.
I was looking for a commuter car at the time and didn't want to row gears for an hour each way so I didn't grab it. I think it was 6 months later that I changed jobs and went down to a 20ish minute commute... But then another 2 years down the road along came a kid and 2 sports cars wouldn't have worked anyway
As far as the PDK, I haven't driven Porsche's but I'm highly impressed by BMW's DCT. I have no qualms admitting that their computers can shift better than I can
Not at all surprised to hear about the many positive traits of Cayman driving experience. Remember, they're still in the Porsche family. I could see a Cayman in my future as well.
The idea of working on a mid-engine car vs. the 996 rear engine setup is a bit unsettling. I really appreciate the easy access to the engine bay on the 996.
I made the same switch about 3 months ago....and I'm not looking back. I went with a 2010 CS, PDK with sport chrono+, pasm, limited slip, and sport buckets. It's a great ride...
As a coincidence I just saw a twin of my car for sale. The only difference was that it was a year newer and had the aero kit added. Here's a link:

There are definitely cheaper examples out there, but I was looking for a particular set of options and I can tell you that this combination is rare. I think it took me about 6 months or so to find a good example with the right options.
Good luck with your search.
Shawn
PS-the Cayman portion of Rennlist is pretty dead (both the 987 as well as the Cayman sections).
The thing I couldn't believe about the Cayman PDK was how early it shifts in econ mode. It would shift before 2000 RPM many times. In fact it was in 7th gear by the time I was going 45 MPH!
Going to sport mode solves that issue but I thought those low speeds would be considered lugging the engine? I guess not.
In the same vein as PDK, I have a handful of friends who have switched from manual transmissions in their VW/Audis to the DSG transmission. Not a single one of them has any intention of going back to a manual transmission.
I've driven a few DSG cars myself now, and I think I would make the switch if I were looking for another car.
PDK with sport chrono+, pasm, limited slip, and sport buckets.
All present and accounted for sir. As for performance, it can surprise motorcycles.......
The big surprise for me was how much faster the car felt due to the transmissions behavior. Just as you pointed out the early shifting to maximize fuel efficiency, it does the opposite when you get on it. If you give it gas, it downshifts multiple gears, often below what I'd normally go for in a manual car. So it feels faster than my 996 because it's taking advantage of the gearing which I normally wouldn't reach for.
