Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
The culprit was a faulty ignition switch which mounts on the rear of the ignition assembly.
Leading evidence: 'ignition switch' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ignition switch' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check 3 position switch' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Like DBJoe says, check the 3 position switch for each light.

My15window - can you provide more info on ‘transport mode’ ie how is this set / changed ?

Moving the switch up (left or right, can't remember) try them both, one setting should turn the light on even with the door closed, key in or not.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The head lights were fixed with a new headlight switch.I also had lights that worked intermittently.
When I open the drivers door the courtesy lights do not illuminate, but the dash gage lights do illuminate When I insert the key and start the car the courtesy lights illuminate. According to the manual this is bas ackwards The courtesy lights should illuminate when the door is opened and go out when the car is started. I have had the car 2 years but there is no history about this problem. It has been this way since I have had the car..it is a 2002 911 Cabrolet
That is strange. Have you tried the various switch positions of the overhead lights?
3 things come to mind: the door latch mechanism and microswitches (which tell the car the door is open), the electrical part of the ignition switch, or the main headlight switch.
Like DBJoe says, check the 3 position switch for each light. Center position should turn the light on when door opens. Moving the switch up (left or right, can't remember) try them both, one setting should turn the light on even with the door closed, key in or not.
I have the exact same issue with my 2002. Have put the overhead 3 position rocker switch in every position to no avail. Only acquired the car recently so haven’t tried troubleshooting yet. Thanks for the post and appreciate the suggestions on where to investigate.
My15window - can you provide more info on ‘transport mode’ ie how is this set / changed ?
the dealer told me that the transport mode keeps the battery from dying when shipping
if the door is open and the light is left on. they are suppose to switch it off before
selling the cars, but it's not uncommon they forget to,
I learned about it on the 986 forum
Yes and its a pain to live with...
When I first got my car I didn't know about the transport mode and tought it was "normal''. German drive fast so maybe they jump-in and start their car quickly. It was still a real problem for me at night.
The dome light would stay on for 3 sec when opening the door and shut off. I had to start my car like Stevie Wonder would have if I was not parked right under a streetlight.
Went to the dealer, the part guy looked at me as I had some sort of mental illness, laughed out loud with the tech, they brought the car inside and 6 mins after the car was out with the dome light shinning as never before, free of charge.
The head lights were fixed with a new headlight switch.I also had lights that worked intermittently. I used a Porsche part as Porsche has about 3 modifications of the switch. The interior lights were fixed with a new convince relay.
