Anyway, I have a strange leak that is very minor but I am seeing if it is the coolant reservoir that was replaced before me buying it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all, I just bought a 1999 996 and was cleaning it and found this thing. What is it and what does it do? Thank you in advance

Outside temperature sensor.

POST 3Original post

Where is that located? Never seen it on my 2002 targa.

POST 4Original post

It helps spread the shock waves if you break the sound barrier.

POST 7Original post

Rookies 🙄 Laser emitting death ray! Was an option.

@Reelkelly996 Welcome to the group! You probably already know, you can find anything about your car here. And if it's not here, you'll find many here who are willing to help figure it out. Have fun with the new wheels!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you all for the answer. Never heard of this either. I do not even see where it has a display in the car to read the temperature outside. Anyway, I have a strange leak that is very minor but I am seeing if it is the coolant reservoir that was replaced before me buying it. It is in the rear next to tire on the drivers side over the exhaust pipes apparently. This but a bit viscous watery fluid. Also, upon cold starts the car makes a strange sound when in the drivers seat until it warms up, say like 5 minutes then goes away. Is this common?

POST 11Original post

What? My 99 C2 displays the outside temp in the digital screen in the bottom of the tach, and that same display shows my speed. Do you perhaps have the optional toggle switch on the steering wheel surround that allows you to toggle through the display settings? Check your coolant cap for tightness, and I mean really tight. The coolant overflow pipe runs down that side of the engine, actually it is a hose pointing downward. Your cap should be blue with a P/N ending in 04. Where do you think the strange sound is coming from...engine, cabin? The secondary air injection pump runs at first cold start and the sound can be described as a small vacuum cleaner whine.

POST 12Original post

If you cycle through the display options in the computer with the lower stalk on the left side of the steering wheel the temp will show up.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16883886

He may not have the computer option and the dealer may not have activated the Temp in the gauge, which was off by default. I have the temp showing but no fourth stalk. Many dealers activated the temp reading as a courtesy for those without the option. I believe it can be enabled using a Durametric.

POST 14Original post

According to my Bentley manual, there are actually three temp sensors that help the A/C system. 1. Outside temp, under the front bumper on the passenger side. 2. Inside temp, passenger side of dash, under the round plastic grate. 3. Intake air temp, from the pic seems to be connected to the air box.

It's there on the passenger side (US cars) front bumper. Sticks through the air duct for the radiators.
