I believe the MkI model has oil temperature reading but my MKII doesn't have it Did anybody found am easy way to display the oil temperature in real time inside the car ? I am sure the car computer has it but is there a gadget out there I can plug in the OBDII to read it ? I found this old thread explaining how to display the oil temp on MKI models on the HVAC console http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=647763 would love to know if there is a similar trick on MKII cars.

AFAIK, there is no back door to getting (among other things) oil temperature from these vehicles. If there is no oil temp gage oil temp is not available, directly. Also, my best info is that oil temperature is available, in as best I can tell all vehicles in the context of this section (and the Boxster section too). Oil temperature is available while at least in one case (my 02 Boxster) oil pressure is not available. (Oil pressure is available, in a very limited fashion: When the engine cranks then begins to run oil pressure builds and this extinguishes the low oil pressure warning light.) Oil temperature for vehicles that have this yet do not bring it out to the dash via an oil temperature gage is available. Without going into too much detail the sensor values may be available via a Mode (aka "service") 1 PID above the 1st 32. (PID - parameter ID.) For instance Mode 1 Pid 0x5C is a one byte value of oil temperature ranging from -40C to +215C. This may or may not be from an temp sensor, though. It might be an inferred/derived value using other sensor inputs An OBD2 code reader/data viewer that supports Mode 1 Pids above the 1st 32 should be able to ask the vehicle for this value if (big if) the vehicle (its population of controllers, primarily the DME) supports this PID. Or the info could be available via a a Porsche proprietary query too. I know for instance my 02 Boxster does not support Mode 1 Pid 0x5C, but it does provide oil temperature for I had a tech read it and give me a printout. However, the oil temperature was read along with a rather large amount of other data (the tech said "20 pages" worth) that I never got to see. All I got was the page that gave the oil temperature along with some other pieces of data which I do not recall. Durametric might provide a means to query the vehicle for this but I have no experience with Durametric. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 5Original post

Durametric will give you real time oil temp. It's under actual values.

Well, there that or find a place for a gauge.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

problem is where / what do I connect the gauge to ? can I put a sensor somewhere on the engine ? I wonder where

POST 9Original post

Oil temperature sending units are available to fit in your drain plug hole.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 9843389

OEM oil temp/oil level sensor is located on top of the case between cyl#4 & #5

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 9844255

It provides both readings. The tube extends down into the oil and has 4 wires. One runs down to a thermister which then has a wire from it running back up the tube which provides an analog temperature reading. Another wire bare from about mid way down to the bottom is looped around some post at the bottom of the tube then comes back up. This bare wire, or wires, is used to measure the oil's level by resistance. Yes, I cut one apart. Hasn't everybody? Sincerely, Macster.

POST 13Original post

Aside from just being interested, why do you want to see your oil temp?

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 9845495

Was wondering the same thing. In my naive, non-mechanical mind: the Porsche engineers, by NOT adding an oil temp gauge, probably thought regular Joe driver does not need one.

POST 15Original post

IIRC, cars that have the AC diagnotic feature have oil temp readings there. My old 2000 C2 had AC diagnostic feature active, but I'm not sure about the oil temp. Not sure if other years had it. -td

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 9845495

The oil temp is a better indicator of when the engine is up to temp. Since the oil is in more direct contact with the hottest parts of the engine and as a result it will be the first to show an abnormal rise in temperature. Thus oil temp can also help one spot an overheating condition long before one can get this info from the coolant temp. Ideally the car, a Porsche anyhow, ought to be equipped with a good coolant temp gage, a good oil temp gage, and a good oil pressure gage. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 17Original post

Even if nothing is going wrong with the car it's good to monitor oil temp especially on the track. Running hard it's not unusual to see coolant temp stay in the normal range and see oil temp climb pretty quickly during hard driving especially on the track.

POST 18Original post

Resurrecting an old thread, how hard is the top of this sensor to reach? Idea being to tap into the temp reading and run a gauge into the cabin Anyone have a picture of what the end looks like in the engine bay ?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 10463995

It's not that difficult as I had to change mine out before. Depending on how flexible you are you can either access it from the top of the engine or you can remove the passenger-side rear tire and go in through there. You'll be feeling your way through everything but once you have a grasp on it, you can easily remove or replace it. Not sure how you want to tap into it but it's accessible. If that's not enough you could lower the engine a bit by loosening the engine mounts but that might be a bit much for this job.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 10464510

Sounds like you're talking about the oil PRESSURE sensor and BAD.TAG is looking for the oil TEMP sensor? Photo of the oil TEMP sensor here ni post #10 https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-996-mkii.html

POST 21Original post

I believe Fernando is correct, as Macster pointed out it has the wring for both the temp and level. Just a matter of how easy it would be to get to so one can attach the gauge

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 10467127

Yes, that dual sensor part is correct. I was just trying to point out there's no easy way to access that sensor if you look at the photo in that thread. The sensor sits on top of the engine right above the crank pulley. Not the same procedures Fernando has described (remove rear tire).

POST 23Original post

The wiring goes to the DME through connector x59/2 located on the right side of the engine. I need to go looking for this connector and see if it can be tapped.

POST 24Original post

Adker I like your thinking..please share what you find

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I really hope someone find a way to get oil temp in the 996, that would really be a step forward for all track rats

POST 26Original post

Looks like the x59 connectors are right were the book said. The wire bundle is wrapped in cloth tape so it should be easy to remove. One of mine is already starting to unwind. Using the same path that Jake documented for his monitor, it should be easy to get a wire to the dash. I need to use the Durametric to read the oil temp while looking at the signal to see how to make an interface circuit. I was thinking about a small box with a Hi temp warning red LED that can be user set and a three digit readout.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Adker, did you look into this ? I am so surprised nobody tried to get an oil temp gauge in their car. The sensor is there indeed, just no way to read it unless you can drive with laptop on your ... lap

POST 28Original post

I have the spare sensor and harness in the garage and I need to do some checking into the P/N to determine what type of signal it outputs...it could be a CAN bus signal or just resistive. I have only lightly tracked this car but I do see a need. Maybe my other car will break and get me into gear.

POST 29Original post

I am pretty sure it is a resistive signal......here is what I gather from the Wiring of the 996: 1.- Sheet 3; Coordinates K, L 11 --- Notice that it is an oil level sensor as well an oil temperature sensor.....Pins 1 and 3 of the sensor sends the resistive signal to the DME (oil temperature)...pins 2 and 4 handle the oil level 2.- Sheet 12; Coordinate E118 ---Notice the motor oil temperature goes into Pin 73 of the DME 3.- Sheet 18; Coordinate L172 The motor oil temperature signal also goes to plug III (52 pins) of the Motronic/E-gas module.....to be specific....pin 5 4.- What is not clear is if the DME sends the signal out to a GUI (may be the OBC or the AC panel display???) --- One of the posts above shows a link to a place where someone was able to toggle the AC screen to show other data...perhaps oil temp is one of them... Regards, PESuazo

POST 30Original post

See post #43 of the Everything You Didn't Know about Your Porsche sticky. It says that 1C may be oil temperature.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

argh this is all chinese to be guys I hope one of you smart guys can figure it out .. So strange nobody has done it before. Especially that we indeed have multiple place to tap for oil temps on this engine.

POST 33Original post

It may be a temp, but I don't think it's oil: After warming up, coolant indicates 180 deg f., but 1c only shows 26, which would equal roughly 80 deg f.

POST 34Original post

It would appear that Ashai (sp?) has the best solution, aside from possibly using a phablet connected to a Durametric cable-if that would work..

POST 35Original post

Bumping an old thread. Has anyone found a way to do this?

POST 37Original post

If you’re looking for an analog style gauge rather than a digital readout, I took Ashai’s thread a step further. Works great, and appearance is close to the stock gauges. The PCB eliminates much of the soldering and the circuit is simplified to only work with the VDO gauge. Still takes some courage to splice into the DME harness and run wires up to the console, but for me was a fun project. https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist....php?t=1147246

POST 38Original post

I use a Launch tech obd Bluetooth dongle and it can access all live data including oil temperature from the ECU

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 16886035

Are you sure about that? Because the 996 doesn't broadcast oil temp over the OBDII protocol like 997 does, it only broad cast oil temp over the Porsche specific protocol.

POST 40Original post

Yes ... sure https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post14952841 https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post15538352 a screenshot from now I could send you a video

Sweet !! So the Launch Tech dongle uses OBDII protocol AND Porsche protocol? Will it work with Torque App so you can set up in gauge style display?

POST 43Original post

Cool, looks like it does use the Porsche protocol (instead of OBDII protocol only)and shows oil temp, although can't use a Torque App for gauge set-up, but at least it can show the oil temp and as much info as the Durametric or PIWIS, just not as many functions..

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 16886277

The only issue is that it's no longer made. I tried to find one and came up empty.

POST 45Original post

Yes ... I dont think it is available. I ordered from eBay, launch tech China. Whatever that might be. And also strange user support. Launch tech referred met to the Chinese for a small issue I had. Yes it is a pocket Durametric. Some functionality is missing. But perfect for monitoring values. Worth the 90$ I paid for it.

POST 46Original post

Quotes source post: 16886357

Huh, Porsche sicked their Lawyers on them !!

POST 47Original post

Why is then still functional in recent updates I got.

POST 48Original post

Silk, does this work on a 996.2 gen? I know the 996.1 can be accessed. This wouldn't be a permanent gauge but i guess it could be useful for a spot check, bluetooth to my phone. Skip, the YouTube didn't say if .1.or .2 And only a spot check.

If i can read the part it shows it's a X431? Would it be this: https://www.newegg.com/p/0KZ-0012-000U6 If so, looks like a pretty good diagnostic tool. Except not bluetooth.

That is a prototype I built years ago using a single din blank radio face plate, a digital display, and an Arduino. Three wire hook-up (pos neg and signal), one wire going all the way to the DME taps straight in to the oil temp sensor wire. I wrote an elaborate computer code using the Steinhart-Hart Equation and a B-Curve coefficient for thermisters. I had never written computer code before, so there was a learning curve and a big rabbit hole I had to enter several times to get it to work..I felt like I had went 6 rounds with Mohamed Ali when I was done. Unfortunately I had a software crash and lost the code a few months later, so this is the only example prototype that is in Sally..
