Best thing to do is if you like the car then after buying it just replace the bearing with the LN Retrofit.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello:
Looking to buy a Carrera 4 MY 01 but build date is 8/00. Does anyone know if in August of 2000, the 3.4 engine Porsche installed in this car was equipped with a single or dual row IMS bearing? I was told by a PCA member that as of September 2000, the engines were all single row IMS bearings. Usually the company is basically off on vacation during the month of August so its a little confusing.
Thanks for any help!
Bob
I am pretty sure it is more complicated than that. First you would need to ensure your car has the original engine and not a service replacement. Even then, the ONLY definitive way to know is to drop the trans and look. There are original engine '99s reportedly with single row bearings. All anybody is doing is guessing. As I understand it, not even the actual engine number will tell you.
My GUESS would be a dual row but the only way to know for sure is to look. What difference do you think it makes? I see pluses and minuses for either one if you are going to replace it. I also see that both have had great results most of the time.
This should be of help to you, but as others have said, look at your actual engine number and then even this data might or might not be correct.

Give the car a PPI...drive it for a good 45 minutes...look at the service history...and read the section in the book "996 The Essential Companion...specifically look at the section on problems with the engines. I think you will feel more confident in buying any of the 996s.
With your build date, whether you have a single or a dual-row is truly a crap shoot.
More likely a dual but not far off a single.
Only way to know is to remove the Xmission and look at the IMS flange.
Anyone confused can go to your site first before posting. It would clear up the confusion about single/dual and build dates. Great info about the subject.
Best thing to do is if you like the car then after buying it just replace the bearing with the LN Retrofit. They you won't have to worry about which one it might have.
In the class action suit, Porsche disclosed the vin numbers for cars with the affected IMSBs, the single row. The vin numbers were posted here a long time ago. Do a search and you should be able to find if your vin was included.
The list used in the suit was for build dates between May 1 2001 and xxxx 2005. If your car was built before 5/1/01, according to the settlement, your car is not at risk, it is not part of the class because it does not use an IMSB of the same design.
That is likely the advent of 996.2 3.6L cars. So 3.4's should never fail right?

scroll down to #5, you will want to stop there anyway because of the hot lawyer chic picture... I think #6 defines the class.
I have seen 2001 engines with dual row bearings. 2000 and 2001 are the question mark years. Throw your reference material away, because its based from records that were loosely kept at best.
My my2000 build date of 12-99 duel row / when replaced it was perfect, I think there is a very very high probability that almost all 2000 will have the duel row bearing
