Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They were cheap, hardly used gas, always ran and were easy to keep running.

My bug story is:- A gang of my friends in a bug returning from Wembley Stadium London along the M6 North had no air in the spare and they had to keep stopping to clean the window.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I remember the bug had to have the spare wheel in the front to be 'full of air' or the windscreen washer did not work.
Just thought this might bring back some memories for some of you older guys. I drove it this morning and decided to take a picture of it and post it here.
Glide, you are right, it is a 64. Still has the bone stock engine and 6 volt electrics. It has about 40 horsepower and still manages to go down the freeway at 70 mph and can do it all day. No power anything, no ac, no disc brakes, just a speedometer and a gas gauge. The windows go up and down with a hand crank. It rides great and drives great, and its so economical that I gotta take gas out when I get there. HaHa. It's still so tight its hard to shut the doors with the windows closed. Gets more waves and comments than my v8 bike or my 996, everybody loves an old VW. This one only has 76000 original miles and was one owner for 46 years of its 50 year life.
That brings back memories. My Dad was a WW2 vet. Went to Europe for a family vacation in the 60's and brought one of those home. Drove Bugs until
they made the Dashers.
Wow, very nice. I grew up learning to drive with a '57(?) IIRC. No gas gauge, either. Speedometer, and three button/pulls, (1)headlights, (2)wipers and (3)ashtray. There was a lever at the floorboard which you could flip, when you ran out of gas....man those were the days.......fond memories for sure. Thankx for posting yours!
Volkswagons were everywhere in the sixties and seventies. They were cheap, hardly used gas, always ran and were easy to keep running. If you didn't actually own one you probably had a family member, friend, girlfriend, neighbor etc that did and you probably at the least rode in one. Many adventures had a VW in the story. I never thought the company would grow to be what it is today but then again I don't remember thinking about the company at all back then. For Porsche enthusiasts VW has always played a large role in the Porsche story.
The only memory I have of our family's bug was spending at least one weekend a month handing my dad wrenches as he spun a tapestry of profanity about the car and its makers...
very nice. it looks very well taken care of.
My uncle donated his bug to Goodwill. It was bright orange and leaked oil everywhere. My parents never let him park the bug near the house or driveway.
The good thing was they were easy to work on and anyone could fix em. They were impossible to get stuck and always could go where the other cars couldn't. Even today they would be great transportation for the average person. Government regulations spelled their doom, there was no other way to kill em.
Throughout my 55 years driving I have owned 3 bugs and a 66 converted sleeper Van. I call the bug the 911s little cousin. It as always a fantasy of mine to own a 911 but wish today I had any one of the bugs, I one time owned, to sit in the garage next to it's big cousin the 911. I remember the bug had to have the spare wheel in the front to be 'full of air' or the windscreen washer did not work. The water was blown onto the screen from the air pressure of the spare wheel. My bug story is:- A gang of my friends in a bug returning from Wembley Stadium London along the M6 North had no air in the spare and they had to keep stopping to clean the window. They cleaned the window by pissing on it. They were all drinking men haha.
Good story, I sometimes think I ought to carry a recorder whenever I talk to someone about the bug, I could write a book of short stories. I have many of my own as I was in my twenties in the sixties and the times were wild. I just got a job driving a truck and I went into a dealer in 1967, I went in at lunchtime on the advice of my friend who said most of the office people would be at lunch. A young eager salesman was on the floor and I told him I wanted the new blue VW that was in the showroom. I told him all kinds of lies about my employment record which was sporadic to nonexistent at best. I had 300 dollars from selling pot which was a pretty good hunk in those days. The car was about 1300 dollars. In any case I gave him the 300 and filled out the papers with a lot of BS and drove the car home. It was my first new car and I usually didn't even have a car just a motorcycle. I got home and about an hour later the VW dealer calls and says I need a cosigner. I said "will you cosign for me" and of course the guy said "NO". I said "either would anybody else!" and I then hung up. I kept the car hid for a few months but I never was late or missed a payment so I never heard anything again.
