I replaced the compressor with clutch on my a few years ago and the cost was only about $279 for the unit and it was the exact same unit that I took out of the car, same modal number, configuration, etc.
Leading evidence: 'exact same unit' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'exact same unit' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ac driver side fuses and all in working order' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I would recommend bringing it to a shop that does AC work.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had the a similar problem and this did the trick for me (of course it cost me $300...).
Hi,
First, I would like to say while this is my first post I have used this forum and has been amazing!!!
I have a Porsche 911 Coupe 3.8L 996
AC unit not blowing cold air. I have read multiple posts but still no luck.
1. Have recharged low pressure valve with AC on full blast and did not correct the issue even for a short period of time. Recharge gage is on far right side in the red indicator.
2. Checked all AC driver side fuses and all in working order.
3. I dont think the AC motor is running but not an expert so can't be sure.
What should be my next steps?
I would remove the belt and see how the compressor feels to turn by hand. If it doesn't turn, wobbles, or is very hard to turn - you likely need a new compressor.
Edit: You're looking for this guy.
I would recommend bringing it to a shop that does AC work. They'll evacuate the system under vacuum and re-charge it. I had the a similar problem and this did the trick for me (of course it cost me $300...). *** If it turns out that the compressor is bad, I've got a brand new one if you need it.
Oh boy! Just went through something similar with our 2007 Mini Cooper. AC kept getting weaker and weaker, and then just blew warm air. We took the car to a AC professional and had the system evacuated and recharged. Lukewarm at that stage. Took the car to another shop to have it checked out. Bad compressor in the end....and $3,000 later we had a working AC system again. The AC system needs a professional even though the AC compressor is fairly accessible on our cars. The Mini front end had to be put in the Service Mode, meaning basically the entire front end of the car has to come off. I've done that myself before, but the complications of the AC system, compressor, service valves, dryer dessicator, and condensor were beyond my abilities in my garage. I guess my recommendation is, get the car to a specialist that you trust and have them first diagnose the system and then make recommendations.
My first look at the problem involved buying one of the freon 134A cans with a gauge on it. The first symptom I noticed was the low pressure side (where you add freon) had too high a pressure reading. That meant I could not add more freon, and that the movement between the liquid/gas high pressure and low pressure side was not working correctly. First clue to a bad compressor.
Yep! It is my wife's car and she absolutely loves it. It was an indy shop that I really trust and we specified only original equipment Mini parts, which added about $1600 to the cost (and a couple of days waiting on parts). But, happy wife happy life! In the end, it works great.
I checked all the replaced parts and he even put it on the lift so I could see all of the Mini part number stickers on the new parts. The tech wrote down exactly how much freon and compressor oil was put back in. This is one of those jobs that requires knowledge, expertise and some highly specialized equipment to ensure it is right. Compressor is warrantied for 3 years and labor for 1 year.
Hi, Scott,
Good advice from the other guys here on this thread. Don't fear the AC professionals even if you think you're gonna get hammered because "it's a Porsche". The AC systems on these cars are basically no different than other cars. It's just the proximity, accessibility, and price of the components that make it more expensive.
I've had an AC issue on my last Carrera. Fortunately, the car just needed to be bled and recharged. Easy.
Can you smell freon inside the car? The evaporator on my 996 leaks and will need replacement. The evaporator is inside the dash. Get about two months on a freon charge.
I double Joe's thoughts. If you look at the center core of the compression, it's obvious the clutch is toast judging from the misalignment (yellow to green arrow). The byproduct is noticed at the red arrow.
IMHO, I'd replace the entire compressor.
If I had to make a wild guess, the clutch sections bearing is gone. (oh the 996 irony!)
DO NOT GO to the Porsche dealer for either an AC Compressor or the clutch. Not sure what year your car is but the dealer price for a compressor is almost $1,800 and for a clutch almost $900. Go to Rockauto.com and get the Denso unit (they have several other units but Denso is the one Porsche uses. I replaced the compressor with clutch on my a few years ago and the cost was only about $279 for the unit and it was the exact same unit that I took out of the car, same modal number, configuration, etc. It went in easily and has worked perfectly for several years. I don't think they sell the clutch separately but at the price they sell the compressor for you could take the clutch off the new one and put it on your and throw the rest away and you would be about $600 ahead.
