Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I doubt I'd need it soon but good to know you can reinstall the software to clean VIN's.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

With my first CEL popping up, I think it's a good time as any to get something to do my own diagnostics with. I still have my VAG-Com cable which was great and allowed me to do just about everything, including coding some cool features into the car. Stuff like hold lock or unlock on key fob to close or open all windows was super useful in the summer.
Durametric seems to be the go to tool. I've seen iCarSoft come up a few times as well. I like that it's a self contained unit but I think it may lack some of the functionality of Durametric, like rough running or cam shaft deviation. Has anyone used it with success?
Durametric is pricy at just shy of $300 but it should pay for itself soon. I may go 50/50 on it with a friend. It does seem to be limited to 3 VIN numbers only. Does that mean that you can recycle the VIN numbers or is this hard coded somehow for life and means that it will only work with 3 cars forever? It also seems to be missing the functionality to code, although not sure if that's something that's possible on Porsche's. Vag cars had quite a few options and I liked that feature a lot. It seems like I may have to jump to a ~$700 pro version to get that which is more than I'd like to spend.
I think there is a way to not hard code the VIN when sharing Durametric. I have borrow one from a friend and I dont think the VIN was registered when I used it.
I have Durametric. IMO you don't need the Pro version for unlimited VIN's unless you have a shop where you work on many cars. I have found Durametric straightforward to use and it gives you lots of options beyond just reading codes. There are many activations that you can use to check things out and see how they are working. I have also found over the last ten years that when I uninstall Durametric and reinstall with the latest version, it always wipes my VIN count and I can just start all over. Really, for our cars, the best bang for the buck!
That's awesome information, DBJoe996. I doubt I'd need it soon but good to know you can reinstall the software to clean VIN's. Is it fair to assume you don't need to register the cable on line or similar?
I have the durametric pro and needed to get Icarsoft as well since Durametric couldn't do something that Icarsoft could....So between the two of them I have everything covered I think. BTW...my mechanic buddy is always borrowing my Durametric Pro. :-)
