Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I installed the B&M SSK when I first purchased my car in 2010.
Leading evidence: 'Install b&m ssk' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'problem' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check linkage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
The stock shifter should be very smooth but imprecise so if the problem is somewhere else, a new shifter will not fix it.

Suggestion
You will have to remove the center console to check all the linkage.

Suggestion
Check the shift cable ends that are connected to the transmission under the car to see if they have been knocked off their brackets.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Love my 03 996. The one thing I would like to change is the shifter. For me the standard shifter is very notchy. I would like something that is smoother, and wouldn't mind a shorter throw. I don't need something out of a race car, I just would like some suggestions for a simple fix. Thanks! Hope everyone's new year is going well.

Of course your stock shifter can also be worn. You will have to remove the center console to check all the linkage.

997.2 GT3 shifter with metal bushings. Somewhat shorter throw, MUCH smoother and lower effort, very positive feel. I've had stock 996, stock 997, OEM 997 SSK, EvoMS SSK, the GT3 is the best by a large margin.
Same here, until I bought the Porsche Shift Bridge tool and did the cable adjustment procedure. Remove the center tunnel between the seats, pop out the shift cables, clip in the bridge tool, pop the shift cables back in, button up the tunnel and its done. The tool is $12.99. Hope that can solve your issue. I tightened my e-brake cable, lubed the shift mechanism and the storage lock mechanism while the tunnel was out.
A used 997 shifter is the bargain fix. They crop up periodically on eBay.
A Numeric shifter costs a lot more but has amazing performance and looks so nice you won't want to cover it up.
Also, your shifting issues may result, at least partially, from worn engine mounts. These are an easy DIY replacement.
I installed the B&M SSK when I first purchased my car in 2010. It has been great but it is now getting a little sloppy. I am also shopping for a new SSK. That is probably the problem with yours
After picking up my 996 last year I thought the shifter was terrible feeling. Coming from a 997 there was no comparison it was crap.
One of the first mods I did was order a Numeric shifter. Upon removing the console to install the Numeric I found the shifter in the 996 was actually a B&M short shifter previously installed. The OEM 997 is a wonderfully smooth shifting mechanism. The Numeric is like a rifle bolt; crisp and precise and very solid feeling shifts.
