I used to change out the fluid on my old cars and made sure I changed the filter at the same time.
Leading evidence: 'Replace filter at the same time' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill automatic trans fluid' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I use the factory fill plug at the very top of the transmission.

Suggestion
The 996.1 and 996.2 have different procedures for changing/filling the automatic trans fluid.

Suggestion
If you a straight end you may have mistakenly thought you filled during the engine off fill period due to fluid spilling back on you while pumping in instead of going over the sides of the fill tube.

Suggestion
ON a 996.1 with ZF Tip, you fill, start engine for 3 seconds, turn off and fill again, then start for 3 seconds, turn off and fill again, then start and shift through the gears, let idle and fill again and let drip unit the trans temp gets to 40c, then plug.

Suggestion
It should definitely be running out when full, do you have a hook or 90 degree end on your fill tool to deliver the fluid over the side of the fill tube?

Suggestion
If you have the engine idling at 20c (or less) and fill untill it is dripping out, it will continue to drip out as the temp climbs (eliminating the excess).......install the plug at between 35c - 40c (not over 40c)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After filling, dripping and going through the steps you first mentioned in your post, i'm still not confident I did this right.
so Ive managed to jack up the car on 4 stands and its level.. changed out the old leaky gasket and made the tool to pump the fluid back into pan.. the PROBLEM is that i cant get the same amount in that I drained out. Im guessing that Ive been able pump in about 3 quarts. Is there somewhere else to add fluid or was there too much in there to begin with?
Thanks !!

If you need to set full level at a certain temperature, then I think you need an infrared thermometer to read temp off the transmission. In your picture don't see a backup if one of your jack stands slips/fails and allows car to fall on top of you.
taking this a step further, Ive noticed after the second time i filled and beofre I started the engine for 3 seconds dirty fluid started coming out, guessing from the torque converter, can I keep adding fluid to flush out as much old as possible? Ive got two 5 gallon jugs and would like to use it all. What do you think?
Sure, the Trans actually holds about 9 quarts, when dropping the pan you only get about half the old fluid out. so pumping more old out will get more NEW in..
i've got the IR gun ready. I appreciate the jack stand comment.. when I was under there I was thinking i needed something else under there just in case.. its now there. Thanks
I have an alternative method. I use the factory fill plug at the very top of the transmission. I drain what I can, measure what comes out, and put that same amount back. It's about 5L.
Awesome,
I love learning about this car!
! When i get the transmission pan up to 40 Cel. excess of fluid will spill out leaving the proper amount, correct? Is there an ideal place to measure the temperature? I'm assuming the center would be fine.
Yes, the trans will be overfilled on the last refill, then as the temp rises the overfill will be spilled out, get the plug in between 35c-40c. Measure temp on the pan will be fine..
If you let the temp get past 40c without the plug in, you will have to start over first be letting the trans cool off.
Do these transmissions have filters that must be changed with the fluid? I used to change out the fluid on my old cars and made sure I changed the filter at the same time.
Yep, not much different except the fill method. It's much different due to the location of the trans, would need a very LONG dipstick/fill tube !!! lol
Do you have a 996.1 or 996.2?
The 996.1 and 996.2 have different procedures for changing/filling the automatic trans fluid. Make sure you have the correct procedures for your car.
With that style jack stand your fine.. You could use a second set of pins in the shaft above the
collar the pins are in, just in case one of the pins lets go.. (Belt and suspenders)
Hydraulic Jacks break often,, jack stands (decent quality ones) not so much..
Also,, its a good practice to leave a jack under the car,, so it something bizarre happens ,,
its easy to get the car off you.
I think I may of messed up in my zeal to flush the bad fluid out.. I was adding more fluid while the car was running expecting excess to drip out and it didn't . Im guessing I pumped in a quart or more before I stopped and shut the car off and let it cool down completely .. some extra did drain out of the fill plug. Am I okay here or do I need to drain the pan and start over?? Thanks
You can drain the pan to get more old out if you want but not necessary if you think you got enough NEW in.
It should definitely be running out when full, do you have a hook or 90 degree end on your fill tool to deliver the fluid over the side of the fill tube? Ive got a piece of 1/4 " copper tubing that I bent like a ? mark.. I think it's good .
After filling, dripping and going through the steps you first mentioned in your post, i'm still not confident I did this right. At this point there is plenty of fresh fluid in the transmission, but my concern, is that after letting it idle long enough to get the drain plug up to 37-40 C there wasn't any fluid dripping out and I just put the plug in, but now i'm thinking that I should of added more, but then the temp would be off( am I over thinking this?). Also, now that the car has cooled and i'm sure fluid has drained back in the pan and If I open the fill plug, fluid will spill out. I was going to collect that fluid bring the car back up to the 35-40 C and add until it starts dripping out. Im hoping I can get away with doing this and not have to drain all the fluid out and start over. Thanks for your help.. as I really need it
Crank it first, then remove the fill plug, a little will come out (just what is inside the fill tube)
If you have the engine idling at 20c (or less) and fill untill it is dripping out, it will continue to drip out as the temp climbs (eliminating the excess).......install the plug at between 35c - 40c (not over 40c)
You have to be kind of quick about it.
For sure.. this one was a bit of a PIA and a little messy but very satisfying. I used Pentosin ATF.
Ps.. the i was using puppy pee-pads to catch the spillage and that made clean up really easy..
