Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Specialty tool 9613. The spacers used during assembly for securing the crank carrier to bank 1 engine case half using the head bolts. Anyone have the dimensions? I was hoping to 3D print them before I start my engine build.

POST 2Original post

I don't have the tool but I can give you the height of the spacer that is required. The diameter of the hole of the spacer is obviously slightly larger than the head bolt. I just made my own by cutting galvanized pipe to the correct length and using washers. Others have done something similar. Not sure what work is involved with making a 3d tool but a work around is very simple. I wait to see if someone can give you the actual tool dimensions but let me know if you what my measurements.

POST 3Original post

For what its worth, the tool that I really need to fabricate is the tool to bolt to the crank carrier to lift the carrier out of bank 1 and set it back in place. I haven't put it back in place yet but taking the carrier out with 2 guys was quite a bit harder than I expected. The guide pins were getting hung up, the overall weight of the carrier and crank and keeping the IMS shaft in place during take out was enough to convince me that it will be well worth my time duplicating some kind of lift assist (like the factory tool) for setting it back in place.. I guess that isn't a candidate for 3d printing as the weight bearing requirement would require some kind of metal structure? I saw someone on this site (don't remember who) that used head bolts and just fastened straps to the bolts. Since I don't have the means to cut a metal plate, I'm thinking of just making a frame from angle iron that the head bolts could go through that would give an easy lift point.

Yeah, the height (or close to it) is all I really need. I would have mocked everything up with my carrier and case, but the case is at LN until probably late Feb. Thanks. There isn't much work to 3D printing some of these tools if you've got the software and printer available. For an RMS install tool it took all of 10 minutes (plus print time) and about a $1 in material.

POST 5Original post

This is really needed to put the crank shaft carrier into the case half?

POST 6Original post

The tools mimic the space that a cylinder head takes up as well as the load that a cylinder head places on the crank case and carrier. The head bolts are really long and go all the way through the head, into the crank case half, and into the carrier cradle itself. The cradle is what ultimately ends up being the main structural component holding everything together. Having these bolts torqued and in place during assembly ensures the correct amount of counter-force is being applied as you're threading bolts through the other half of the engine and into the other side of the carrier. This is what I learned in my 102 hands-on class.

POST 7Original post

I will get you the measurements that I have. Are you in a rush or in the next few days ok? Did you make some kind of crack carrier mount for dropping the carrier back in the case half?

POST 8Original post

The part is only $45 from Porsche. Seems to me, you might not want to risk it with a 3D printed part. That's a lot of weight.

POST 9Original post

I think that's the rub for many of us is to spend $45 for a simple spacer. It's a fair amount of weight but its really not that complicated to work around for the money. Some guys have just used deep well sockets and washers. I just cut some galv pipe I had on hand.

Thanks. No rush at all. Hadn't put any thought yet into making a crank carrier mount. Jake makes dropping it in look pretty straight forward in his video series.

Just a little side project to pass the time while I wait for parts and for the NE winter (and road salt) to pass. If I'm not satisfied with the outcome, I'll spend the money.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 16338373

Interesting! There are other bolts then the head bolts, that hold the carrier to the case halves. Didn't know this tool existed so I didn't use one but looking at them, I think some plastic plumbing fittings can be used as a spacer too to do the same job too.

POST 13Original post

@Imo000 , yes you're right about other bolts. I'm quoting Jake about the cradle being the main structural component connecting the heads, case, and cradle - via the head bolts. So that's something I trust him on. Obviously the head bolts are long as all get out. I'm not sure what the difference in purpose is between the smaller bolts that have the little o-rings on them and the big head bolts. I'm talking about the smaller bolts that go into the front half of the cradle after installation. Those also obviously hold it in place as you put them in before rotating the engine on stand. Back to your question - is this absolutely necessary? I'd venture to guess no. There aren't any gaskets on the M96 so even when I go back and read my own explanation, (per Jake,) I am at a loss how you'd screw up the spacing for the cylinder head. I feel like the tension the head bolts provide is the primary benefit during assembly, rather than the spacing.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 16340109

Yes, those O ringed bolts hold the crankshaft carrier in the case half or at least that's how it looked to me when I was taking apart and putting back together my engine. Fun fact: Don't install the heads until all of the O ringed bolts are in the block of else it will make things interesting really quick. Ask me how I know.

POST 15Original post

The total length of my spacers that I cut are 2.6 inches. I came up with this measurement so that the head bolt would not bottom out to its full thread depth but still roughly 90% threaded in. The head bolts measure .389 inches at the diameter of the threads.

POST 16Original post

By the way Yaz996, I watched the series of Jake's video last night with him inserting the crank carrier into the case half. I agree, I am abandoning the idea of building a support to lift the crank carrier. I have in mind an improvised tool to allow a helper to hold the flywheel side (something like the tool he's using in the video). I am so happy I bought that video series. Lot's of little tidbits that I didn't catch in the hands on class.
