Anyway, I went ahead and removed the passenger side sill as well and had a local Porsche body shop that was strongly recommended by the dealer to paint both of the door jambs.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay, so I'm trying to determine if the other 996 models such as the C4 and C4S came with factory installed door scuff plates that were etched per the respective model. Basically, a C2 would say "Carrera" on it...it would not "Carrera 4" or "Carrera 4S". Did each model come with their own scuff plate? By any chance, DID ANY C4 or C4S come with factory installed "Carrera" lettering only and not the other options? I know that owners would be able to upgrade to the stainless door sills. Did these ever come factory installed or were all of the stainless door sills installed after the fact? Thanks in advance to all the 996 Rennlsters for their feedback!
Mine is an '02 C2 that I just bought yet the sills say C4S. The owner's son says they were delivered that way (single owner). Anyone else heard of that?
This was the exact case in my 2002 C4S. 2nd owner...Stainless "Carrera" plates. The driver side was peeling off BADLY, I took it off and realized that the paint was a complete mess. Looks like the PO wanted to replace the plastic black C4S sills and went this route versus getting the correct "Carrera 4S" stainless sills, at least that is what I am led to believe after reading on this thread that most contributors had the correct set.
Anyway, I went ahead and removed the passenger side sill as well and had a local Porsche body shop that was strongly recommended by the dealer to paint both of the door jambs. They did have to remove the doors but it came out flawless...although it took a about a week just to prep the jambs because the shop's painter was so meticulous on the job. Obviously this was why they are recommended. They said that they normally don't touch cars over 10 years old because the paint is sometimes faded so badly that they know it won't match. My coat is still excellent and so they made the exception and took the gig.
I was very happy with them. If anyone wants the name, just PM me and I'll forward you the shop's GM. It's best to go through him.
I've been going back and forth if I should get a correct set of sills or just leave the jambs alone now. I do like the body colored look...

Hey
Thanks for this post, good insight.
I have the P repair manual and they do not address the scuff plate at all. So wondering if you have some ideas on removal of the plate?
I can see some paint damage at the edge and want to get them up to investigate, without doing any damage.
Are they clipped on, or glued? Any guidance is appreciated

glue on w 3M dbl sided tape, Use a heat gun and take your time. direct heat at stainless instead of painted area might be safe route, but you'll have to follow up tape removal.
Not a fun job.
Dan - Try heating them up with hair dryer on high or heat gun on medium heat. Use a 4 lb test (or so) fishing line and trim tools to release the double side tape. That should lift the sill plates off and leave the clearcoat intact. Then you just have the tape residue left to remove.
