Price is good, very clean, color is less desirable to many but I like it.

For me the one you are looking is a well sorted mechanically sound car but I would have to change the wheels, I am not a fan of that color - my car has the same interior color - it is less desirable then black or natural.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone, I'm a 30+ year owner of my all original 944 and always wanted to step up to the 911/996 world and am now seriously looking. PelicanParts forum contributors offered lots of good advice and I'd like to know what you all think? My range of years will be 00-04 and I'm in Tampa. Thanks, Ralph
Thanks so much. I test drove an 04 a few days ago and was extremely impressed at the seeming "No End" to the power curve! Here's one I'm looking at and it seems to have all the right things done to it already.

Take your time and get the car you really want. There are a lot of 996's available, so you can be a little picky and not have to settle for a car that may not be ideal. I searched for 3+ month's for the "right" car.
I knew that I wanted the wide body C4S and was hoping for a clean 03-04. After looking at several that were in my range, I quickly discovered that low mileage with a lack of updates and maintenece records was not better than a higher mileage example that had been driven and well documented.
Good luck on your search..
The car you saw appears to be in very good shape cosmetically and mechanically, and has about the same mileage as my 99 C2. I would suggest you pull the trigger and be prepared to smile big. Aside from the internet horror stories concerning the 996, you'll probably enjoy the 911 as much as your 944(maybe even more).GL in your search.

I'm two years into 996 ownership. If I could go back two years and choose a different car...I wouldn't. I love the 996. It's plenty fast, beautiful, and fun. What's not to like about that?
Wow, you have owned that 944 since new or nearly new then which I think is getting to be pretty rare these days.
I have a soft spot for the 944/S2/968 cars.
I purchased my 1st about 20 years ago (an '83) and began then to understand what made Porsches so special.
Are you going to keep the 944 along with your new 996?
I like the 996 that you posted about. The ad shows attention to maintenance which is critical with the 996.
My advise it to make a list of all of the things you want on your 996 then look for a long time.
A well sorted mechanically sound car is the top of the list for most for me color and wheels were also important.
Even after looking for a long time I did not get everything on my list but it might have taken too long to find an exact match.
After I picked mine out I had a budget to add the things that were on my list that car did not have.
clear bra, great tires and a after market sound system
these items add up fast so if you can get them on the car you purchase it can be quite a savings in the long run.
For me the one you are looking is a well sorted mechanically sound car but I would have to change the wheels, I am not a fan of that color - my car has the same interior color - it is less desirable then black or natural. looks like a great car if you like the color - the price is good too !
I was told by a colleague at work there is a local 2003 C4S in Lapis with 8000 miles for sale between $35 and $40k. My research indicates the price should be around $43k for such a low mileage car. First thing I'd do is an IMSB update, as low runners are suspect. I have no other details and do not have any contact info.

Thanks guys for the additional cars but I don't want one that's been modified from stock in any way, even cosmetically. I do want the important maintenance items addressed though such as IMS, RMS, clutch and brakes etc so as a previous poster said; "make a list" and keep looking so that's what I'll do. Ralph
A couple of other points on my method of buying used
If you are some what interested in the car make a pretty low offer and stick to it/if they accept you get a great deal and can justify a few things that are not ideal about the car this only applies to cosmetic items not the mechanics or lack of maintenance.
Be obsessive about your search - look every day at all of the online websites this way when you see a car that is right you will have I high level of confidence in your decision and you will know what to offer.
Drive as many as you can
Ask people that you see driving the vintage you are interested in / most owners love to talk about their cars and it is a totally different vibe then forums/ every owner I talked to in person could not say enough how great and trouble free their car was.
lastly remember they are literally thousands of these cars for sale so don't stress if you miss one or a seller does not accept your offer.
When you go out to the garage and look at your 996 you want to know you got the right one for you.
That's really good advice wyo, I appreciate especially since the guy with the red 996 in VA has not responded to my last email. Oh well. How about some candid thoughts on this guy

. What I've found is the turbos are not bullet proof. Still, I bought one, so...yea.

Price is good, very clean, color is less desirable to many but I like it. Defiantly worth a test drive.
When I was looking I had a mileage range of between 35k and 60k that I was interested in
I will put about 6 k on in a year so my rational was if got a996 with 45k it will take me almost 11 years to hit 100k
Price + maintenance divide by miles = cost per mile in theory will be Lower if you get a car with fewer miles.
To me what I was really buying was what is left of the average life of the car.
I put more of a premium on miles than a lot of people.
There are so many variables that it makes it impossible to use this approach apply to all cars but in general it is sound
Lets say the average effective life span of a 996 is 150k miles if you buy one that has 90 thousand for 17k you are buying 60 k miles at 28cents per mile if you get a 996 with 50 k miles for 22k you are buying 100k miles at 22 cents per mile.
That's assuming that both cars will have similar maintenance costs.
Cost you more upfront but lower cost per mile
I did talk to the dealer and he had no maintenance records but did say the car was probably going to auction this week. Can't get up there till sometime next week so....
