Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello my friends!.. My 2002 4s was always a little low on the rear drivers side sinse i purchased the vehicle years ago. I recently installed some H&R springs for the 1 inch drop.. Now the uneven ride height is even more obvious. I remember seeing somewhere on this forum that the 996's did have coil spacers/shims available to level out the ride height. ( 3mm and 6.5mm?) Anyone got a part number? I surely need atleast 6.5mm on the drivers rear.. and furthermore, can they be stacked? ( 3+6.5).. I have no idea why its uneven..maybe from the previous owner hitting a large bump pushed up the tower?.. anyways..thanks..Oliver

POST 3Original post

And how do you know it is lower? Is it visual or did you somehow measure the heights?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Miami.. pmkazz..car sits 3/8 of an inch lower on drivers rear compared to the passanger side.. i measured several times.. and the clearance between the tire and rear quarter is noticably different from side to side.. 2 sets of springs now comfirmed that something doesnt jive...

POST 7Original post

If you still have the old springs and they are OEM you should see if they are the same tolerance group. Check the spring single upper painted bar to verify it is the same color on both sides. If so you should have the same size compensating disc both sides. For the rear it should be 0.5 mm or 4 mm, the fronts are 3 and 6.5.

Are you correctly measuring from the factory measuring points on the chassis (hard to tell from your comment above)? If you're using the body like a fender lip, you might have repaired body damage changing the body work shape and not a chassis-based alignment issue. When lower-than-stock suspensions are installed, the various suspension links on the rear should be relaxed at the new height then re-tightened to free the bushings so there's no bushing pre-load.

POST 9Original post

Measuring from the fenders is not an accurate measuring point as the body of the vehicle is not necessarily even at all four points. As garrett376 indicates, you need to measure from the chassis measuring points for hard accuracy. I have seen many 996s with uneven heights measured at the mid-fender to ground even though the vehicle was flat measured at the chassis four points. Good luck..

Thanks guys!!! .. So my original rear springs both had a green/silver strip...they matched... But there are no compensating disc on either side. SHOULD THERE BE??? I am assuming your talking about a spacer under the spring, right? If so, is this a dealer item thats still available? regarding body damage, non whatsoever. ( other than the ding in the quarter from the Korean kid at walmart),, I had a 4 wheel aligment done after the H&R spring install.. Wouldnt they have "relaxed" the suspension prior to adjustment? Like i mentioned earlier, this problem was there( just not as obvious) with the factory springs too.. Its been aligned 2 times since i owned it... I am hoping i can shim up drivers side to level it.. I think i honestly need 10 to 15mm .. Passanger side sits perfect.. i just want the drivers side to match. thanks again..oli

I am wondering how the engine mount would be related with the rear geometry.. any info would be appreciated!..thanks

POST 12Original post

I have the same problem on my 2004 AE with x74 suspension the passenger rear sits about 1/4 - 1/2 inch higher than the drivers side. Car drives fine I have had it aligned twice as we'll. Drives my OCD part crazy but have come up with no solutions either.

POST 13Original post

Your spring color code should be green/red/lilac if it is manual. Green/silver if it is a tip. Above those should be a single color code, that is the tolerance group color code I was talking about. There does not need to be compensating discs in your suspension, i did not have any either when i went to RoW M030. They are there apparently to compensate for different tolerances in the coil springs to make sure the car sits a a certain height.

The quick way to tell if you have a bad engine mount is that one tailpipe will be slightly lower in the tailpipe body cut out then the other side. The odds that they both go at the same time are rare - usually one side before the other unless you've been driving around for a long time not feeling the difference in handling. Something else is the issue here. I'd try a shop that are experienced in racing where they do corner weight/balance and have them check it out. If you've never changed the engine mounts maybe its time to do them anyway as your car is now 12 years old and these mounts suffer aging issues even if the car isn't high mileage.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

tolerance strip is a light blue on both rears.. ( tranny is Tip).. Engine is level as far as i can tell!! Mounts where solid last time inspected.. MiamiC70, i drove with the uneven level for years too.. i always thought it was a lazy spring on one side..until now! thanks for reply guys

POST 17Original post

I posted a DIY for this exact problem last year. I have some extra spacers I could send you if you shoot me a PM. This worked great for several months without any deterioration. The only reason I'm not running them now is because I got a great deal on coilovers. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-rear-end.html
