Hi all, I have a 1998 996 C4 cab, and the rear spoiler has been giving me some grief. Initially it was coming up both sides ok, but when retracting the left hand side was sticking, so it would end up tilted after a higher speed journey. (or operating it manually). I pushed it down a couple of times after this happened. Now it is not coming up on the left side, the right side rises up without problems still. Trying to go through this collection of parts, can't really tell what could be sticking: http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=803-07 Any ideas? Thanks

Have you already lubed the spoiler ? There are two small holes where silicone or graphite can be sprayed into the lift tubes.
Never had may spoiler not work, so take this for what it is. I have taken my spoiler apart a few times, so I know all the pieces backwards and forwards. There is one motor that dives both sides, so if one side goes up then the motor is fine. The motor spins a gear inside the little black box (part number 12 on your diagram), which moves two rods (no hydrolics) inside the black box which connect to part 17. When the rods are pushed or pulled is moves a piston on part number 17 which raises and lowers the spoiler. I would first lube the pistons as suggested. You can also open the cover on the black box (part 12) and lube the gears, but I can't see how the gear can spin and not raise one side without a tooth or someting being stripped. The gear is metal and the teeth on the rod that gets moved are plastic so I wonder if you have a stripped tooth. This is an easy DIY fix, if I can take it apart anyone can. I also have extra parts if needed. I would first lube everything and see if that fixes the problem. If not you need to take off the rear deck lid and take it apart. First time took me a couple hours. It is pretty straight forward. Let me know what happens. If you are close to Akron come on by and I'l fix it for you. If not and you decide to tackle on your own I could take a lot of pics of my spare parts and walk you through it.

No haven't lubed it, was struggling to find what/where to lube. But thanks, amazing, I think I found the holes, they're one on each lift tube, right? Off to get some silicone spray.

Brilliant, thanks for this info. Will start looking at taking it apart if the silicone lubing doesn't work. Really helps when someone can give some pointers. Currently chucking it down with rain, so will have to wait for a nicer day. Thanks for the very kind offer to stop by Akron, but I'm in the UK.
Pain... silicone didn't help at all. So right hand piston pulls the wing up and down fine. The left hand will pull it out a bit but then that side of the wing abruptly gets stuck on something. And it doesn't seem like the piston is the problem. I can gently ease it out manually and get it level with the right hand. And then the reverse with the retraction that works fine... so doesn't seem like the pistons/teeth, because surely the retraction would fail, no? Anyway, will keep troubleshooting over the weekend.
