Since the car/engine has 106K miles and I guess passed a thorough used car/used Porsche check out with flying colors, I'd tend to keep doing what has worked so well up 'til now.

And cut that filter open and inspect for shiny metallic flakes each time.

If you haven't already, get a copy of the recommended maintenance schedules as there's a bunch of other stuff that's supposed to be done at 105k that may not have been- they're available at renntech.org if you need (you may need to register an account, I can't recall if they're public or not).

Porsche's recommended oil change intervals are really long with these cars (10-15k miles) so standard oil change intervals you're used to from other cars don't apply.

However, if you feel -- there doesn't appear to be any science to back this up -- but if you feel that 0w-40 is too "light" for high ambient temperatures then run 5w-50.

Again, why you would want to take car/engine that has made it to 106K miles with apparently no issues and in good enough shape to buy and start messing with it running some goofy oil is beyond me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2002 911 Coupe with 106,500 miles on it. I have just recently purchased it from a close friend of mine. I am planning to do an oil change on it within the next week and will be doing it myself. As far as I can see from the pile of receipts he gave me the last oil change was in December. It's only had a couple thousand miles on it since but I'm fanatical about these things and think I should change it immediately. My friend says I can wait till about 12,000 miles or so but I would never wait longer than 5,000. My question is since I live in Texas and the temperature is already in the 90's and while regularly be in the low 100's what weight oil should I use? I see 0w-40 being talked about but with our weather I'm thinking at least 5w-40 or maybe 15w-50? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Btw...I'll post photos and details over the weekend. I also have a million other questions as we'll.
Thanks!
Porsche approves 0w40,5w40, and 5w50 -
Porsche approval is A40
Over the counter easy to get a mobile 1 0w40 at walmart or penzoil ultra euro 5w40 at autozone. There are other on line oils such as amsoil, royal purple, DT40, etc.
Any will be fine
5000 miles seems to be the recommendation
Welcome! Plenty of other oil threads here already if you search; you'll find virtually every Porsche owner has different opinions about this. Porsche's recommended oil change intervals are really long with these cars (10-15k miles) so standard oil change intervals you're used to from other cars don't apply. You've got proof the oil was recently changed; you'd be better off doing an oil analysis, and go from there, as the analysis may reveal other issues you'd miss if you just changed the oil, and they can tell you as well if you need to change now or can wait until 12k as your friend recommends. I use Blackstone Labs with every change. If you haven't already, get a copy of the recommended maintenance schedules as there's a bunch of other stuff that's supposed to be done at 105k that may not have been- they're available at renntech.org if you need (you may need to register an account, I can't recall if they're public or not).
PS- your first post is supposed to include a whole bunch of photos of your new Porsche
I change my oil every 3K miles. Paranoid I guess. I'm happy with Total 5W-40. Southern CA, so similar weather as you I think, in general (other than those freekin' hot long summers you have).
If you claim you're fanatical about oil changes that's great because IMO 5K between changes should be the absolute most. And cut that filter open and inspect for shiny metallic flakes each time. Weight wise I use Mobil 1 0w40 since it's approved, cheap and readily available.
Another over the shelf option that is easy to get and Porsche appeoved is the Castrol 5w40 synthetic.
Gawd, I can't believe I just participated in another oil post but then again Jake and KK threaten to leave and always end up coming back so I guess I'm just following their lead.
To the OP:
Some experts have done a lot of research on this. Most agree that to help the M96 survive you must;
1. Use more frequent oil changes. At most, 5K miles or 6 months.
2. Use a higher viscosity oil, especially in hot climates. 0W-40 is too thin for Austin summers.
3. Use a high(er) zinc content oil. Such as JG DT40.
Thanks for all the replys. I've spent hours looking thru all the threads on this subject but none of them dealt with hot weather specifically. I definitely don't want to use 0w-40 because I think it's too lightweight of an oil for Austin summers. That's why I was thinking 5w-40 at the very least and something more like 5w-50 or even 15w-50.
I'm with Cuda, oil is pretty cheap insurance when you do it yourself, Motul 8100 Excess? The best product I've ever used in any of my vehicles, the RBF 600 brake fluid is great too.
I'm a 7500 mile oil changer. You realize these cars have nearly 9 quarts of oil in them, right? That's almost double the amount of oil compared to your average engine in the same size range.
Did the car spend its time in your area? If so what did the previous owner use? Since the car/engine has 106K miles and I guess passed a thorough used car/used Porsche check out with flying colors, I'd tend to keep doing what has worked so well up 'til now.
IOWs, don't fix it if it ain't broke.
BTW, I've been through 116F heat with my Boxster with 0w-40 in the engine and the coolant temperature was 226F, intake air temperature around 135F and it was like this for hours. Absolutely no problems.
Since then my 996 Turbo has been in up to 119F heat with the same oil with no problems.
Have to mention that in both cases the oil was reasonably fresh. As I have stated before I follow a 5K mile oil/filter service. In the case of the Boxster that oil had around 1K miles on it. I had it changed in Sacramento CA and the high temps were encountered after drive to southern AZ.
In the case of the Turbo it was on the way back from a road trip to the Midwest and the oil had under 4K miles on it.
However, if you feel -- there doesn't appear to be any science to back this up -- but if you feel that 0w-40 is too "light" for high ambient temperatures then run 5w-50. This is not a typo for 15w-50! BTW, and FWIW, 15W-50 is not an approved oil though unfortunately for too many owners that is the only thing that counts when selecting an oil, that it not be approved.
Again, why you would want to take car/engine that has made it to 106K miles with apparently no issues and in good enough shape to buy and start messing with it running some goofy oil is beyond me.
It comes down to what I said above: Don't fix it if it ain't broke.
You ought to try out Joe Gibbs Driven, I have been running it in my 930 and so far I'm a happy camper.
I have the DT40

^This. Amazon.com always has a 4 - 5 liter jug case for super reasonable with free shipping. And it's better than anything you can find at Pepboys or Autozone.
