Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

While looking for a 996 cluster for my Boxster I found a lot of black face ones but few white (or more correctly, aluminum) face ones. I did some digging and found that for 2003 & 2004 the aluminum face gauges were an $855 option - X71. Now I know.

POST 2Original post

Thanks for the info. I really like the look of my guages. Black is just too plane for me. Different strokes for different folks i guess.

POST 3Original post

Too funny. On the boxster forum there are a lot of people trying to fit 996 black gauges. Much of it is to pick up the oil pressure gauge but many like the black faces

POST 4Original post

In 2004 and likely most other years, you could also get instrument dials painted in Speed Yellow, Guards Red, Carrara White or Jazz Blue (option C45, $1,175) or 'interior color' (option X45, $860). I don't mind the black, but I did find it harder to read the instruments at a very quick glance when on the track... Prefer white for visibility.

POST 6Original post

$100-200 aftermarket option, done. Don't bother with the vinyl decal versions. They aren't 100% accurate and has some jagged lines in the font if you look close.

In preparation for this mod to my Boxster I have done a ton of searching on the forums. Changing out the instrument cluster faces is not for the faint of heart. There is a lot to it and the removal and replacement of the needles is a delicate procedure. There are numerous stories of cracking the base or damaging the gears. If I were to change out the faces I would look into having it done professionally.

Nah, done half a dozen of them. People that break these are ones that man handle it or shouldn't be touching sensitive electronic pieces to begin with. These are the same types that would probably break electrical bulb connectors and such trying to replace their bulbs. It's def not for everyone as not everyone has the attention to detail, delicate hands, accumen to handle this type of stuff but it's really a level 2 on a DIY scale of 5 imo. If you're a linebacker type, or built and act like this guy, then this mod is definitely better left to the pro's.

POST 9Original post

North Hollywood Speedometer makes Gauge faces in multible colors. They advertise some with "Boxster font" They have done this for many years, They made the faces for Saleen when I worked their starting in 1993.

POST 11Original post

Chuck, removing the needles should be easy by pulling straight off with a fork. Why not get the proper year cluster in black & get red faces with Boxster font from NH speedometer?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 11942292

The quality kits come with their own removal tool. I suspect over half the guys that screw up the install is due to using improper tools.

POST 13Original post

Chuck- Thanks for the informative post. I have black gauges in my 2003 C2, and was wondering what the difference was (I've seen 03 C2's w/ aluminum gauges). Good to know. W/ the beige interior I don't know if I would switch for the aluminums, even though I prefer them.

Good to know. For a 2001 Boxster I need a 2002 to 2004 996 cluster. I was able to find one out of a cab with the aluminum face. With all the red I have going on in the Boxster I think I'll leave the faces white.
