Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Since there is a 2 year/24K mile warranty on the repair I do not worry about the T-stat not being tested.

For my Porsches I have the tech replace the T-stat.

My professional mechanic friends always advised me to replace the T-stat at the same time as the water pump.

One says they always replace the thermostat on 996 when doing a water pump, the other that says they never replace the thermostat.

It is a cheap part and there is very little additional labor involved if you are already changing the water pump.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Getting conflicting advice from two shops - both of which I use and respect. One says they always replace the thermostat on 996 when doing a water pump, the other that says they never replace the thermostat.
Thoughts?
If the extra labor is very little (it should be) and the part itself is not expensive, I think it's worth replacing it. Mine already had quite a bit of wear on the brass shaft due to the operation of the valve (opening and closing) when I changed it out at < 60k miles. I DIY'ed it so labor is "free" and it's an easier decision for me.
If you don't do it now and it fails later, you will need to pay more labor overhead.
WP, tank, cap, belts, lines/hoses, t-stat, coolant flush/fill and bleed: paid my indy (around $400-ish) to do them all at the same time (I supplied the parts

It is a cheap part and there is very little additional labor involved if you are already changing the water pump. I consider it SOP to do the thermostat when changing out the water pump. Why not?
My professional mechanic friends always advised me to replace the T-stat at the same time as the water pump.
Furthermore they advised dropping both the old one and the new one in a pan of water on the stove and heating the water and confirming the old and new T-stat opened at the correct temperature and fully opened to avoid installing a bum T-stat (or one mis-marked).
I have always followed their advise. For my Porsches I have the tech replace the T-stat. Since there is a 2 year/24K mile warranty on the repair I do not worry about the T-stat not being tested. If it doesn't work the tech will note this right away as he confirms the T-stat opens as the engine gets hot as he can feel the lines to/from the radiators getting warm.
had all the DIY write ups/videos lined up but after reading a few guys moan/groan about this project PLUS the labor quote from my indy.......made it a no-brainer for me to be a "plastic mechanic" once again
