Suggestion

If the AOS is included I would hazard a guess you replaced a less efficient AOS with a more efficient one, one that removes more oil vapor from the crankcase fumes before routing the fumes to the intake.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I first purchased by 2003 C2 one year ago it would consume a quart of oil every 1200-1500 miles. Somewhat of a garage queen with 42K miles on it. When I got it I did all the preventative items that worried me. Since then I excersise it daily with many trips between 5000-6000 RPMs. Why not, with the fister D and that flat six screaming why wouldn't you? This is my DD and put 14K on it this past year. I have noticed a reduction in oil consumption. Now it is closer to a quart every 2000 - 2200 miles. I guess it is finally receiving a "proper" break in

Doubt the rings were not seated well enough to account for the oil consumption. What preventative items did you replace? If the AOS is included I would hazard a guess you replaced a less efficient AOS with a more efficient one, one that removes more oil vapor from the crankcase fumes before routing the fumes to the intake. It is my belief that most oil burners are because of a sub-par/inefficient AOS rather than some internal engine issue.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

AOS was changed when fist purchased the car. Since it needed a clutch I bit the bullet an did the following since the engine was coming out. IMS, RMS, Light weight fly wheel, clutch, T stat, plugs, new coolant hoses, cylindar head plugs, oil pump O ring, front seal, resealed oil cooler, coolant trans and brake flush, and new belt. not cheap but good piece of mind.... I posted as food for thought as I have heard of DFI engines oil consuption begins high and reduces as they get older. Different beast all together but started me thinking..

POST 6Original post

My 996 - with about 65K miles on it - uses no appreciable oil between changes. Occasionally - maybe every third change - I'll add a cup or two of oil based on the dash indicating that I'm a bar low. I'm not throwing this out for any reason other than to offer another data point for comparison - I have no idea why your oil consumption is substantially different than mine, nor would I suggest worrying since your car is running fine.

POST 7Original post

"IMS, RMS, Light weight fly wheel, clutch, T stat, plugs, new coolant hoses, cylindar head plugs, oil pump O ring, front seal, resealed oil cooler, coolant trans and brake flush, and new belt. not cheap but good piece of mind...." Ouch...Must've been a rather heavy bill - mind sharing (ball park is ok...) ? BTW, if the "peace of mind" is worth the cost to you, that's all that really matters !

POST 8Original post

That IS a mighty long and expensive list of stuff to tack onto a clutch job. You could probably buy a WHOLE mind for that much $$!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah, not cheap. 6K. I had a very reliable 951 that I rebuilt from the ground up. I wanted this car to be as reliable as possible and change any age related things so I would not have to worry about it for a while. I knew I was going in pretty deep so this went into the negotiation of price at purchase so the sting was not quite as bad. still a shock to the pocket book. I am not worried at all as Porsche states that even a quart per 600 miles is acceptable. I just thought it was interesting that I have noticed some improvement.

POST 10Original post

More expensive flywheel & clutch raise that "cost"

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yes for sure!! Don't have the invoice in front of me but I think the flywheel and cluch were 1800 - 2K and labor was 2K or better as well.

POST 12Original post

I plan to have RMS/AOS/IMSB (gasp, I said the dreaded word) someday, may I ask what shop you used (I am in Temecula).

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PM'd details. Others, I PM'd information as I am not happy with their means of doing business but don't want to slander publically as it was just my expereince. I will be going somewhere else in the future.

POST 14Original post

Wow...6k is on the high side of what I was thinking (I thought more like $5 -5.5k) as I would think there would be a big labor savings by doing all the work at the same time. Seems almost like they charged "book time" on every job as though they were only doing that job.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

dporto - yes 5K is what I was lead to believe it would cost.

POST 16Original post

hope ur enjoying those fisters! My car hasn't used a drop of oil in over 4 years, but I really don't drive that much anyway and have only put 15K on the clock during that time. One of the experts on here told me there is no particular reason for either, some burn some oil, some don't. Good to see your car running well! m

POST 18Original post

"dporto - yes 5K is what I was lead to believe it would cost." I can hear their conversation now... "hey what do you think we should charge him, should we go by the book? Absolutely! He owns a Porsche, he can absorb the extra grand" ! Scumbags !!!

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

customer for the day or customer for life. Quaility of work would have kept me coming back but they obviously had their eye on a one time gouge. C - ya to them. What goes around comes around.....
